I know people who are kind of similar to Lightning (only more capable of having a laugh when drunk, although I don't know what Light is like when drunk, so...) in that they are often serious and are fairly 'tough girls'. I think her serious side was good considering the situation she was in, however at the same time I do think that she should have been capable of laughing etc. throughout the game. But the main personality trait she had for herself worked for me well enough.
Tidus and Yuna are equally as bad as each other. Being just as bad as or even slightly marginally better than another character doesn't make you better than other characters by default. As far as protagonists go, Tidus was horrible. Even Vaan was better. And, somehow, more mature.
You're right about the compilation, I hate what they did to Cloud. Even when he was going through his child issues in FFVII, that was at least his issues stemming from his childhood rather than issues stemming from the now. The 'present' Cloud was still tough, the 'five year old' Cloud was the one that was a wuss. The difference between Cloud and Tidus is that Cloud was a tough guy who had issues as a youngster. Tidus, however, still has those issues in the 'present' stage of the game. He's an annoying prat from start to finish. =|
