If Marilyn hadn't died when she did, she was set to blow the lid publicly on their affair. This led to some people suggesting she was killed to get her out of the way. I don't think he really wanted to get married but it was better for his image. In other words, if he had been alive he would have been disgraced, and a President in disgrace doesn't stay in the Presidency long.
