I've always been puzzled by this saying... I understand what it implies but it just doesn't make sense.

Once you eat your cake, you no longer have the cake, basically. Some people might like the idea of having cake. It's like having money and not spending it - loads of people have lots of money that they aren't using immediately. They might want to save their cake for later! And so on and so forth.
Maybe the cake is awesome. Like, it's a cake shaped like a chocobo. It seems like such a waste to eat a piece of art like that, but it is after all what it's designed for.
