The choice between giving Alex (and the many other youths in the book who are like him) freedom to cause injustice and suffering, or giving his government that same freedom is an unpleasant one. Either choice will encounter voices of harsh opposition. The question, as presented by Burgess, is basically unanswerable because society will always have to shift back and forth in an attempt to find an elusive middle ground.
