If the 'employers' are purely local, with only a few neighboring cities, what possible political interest could a vacation to china have for them?

Naturally. That is the name of the game. The only time a player has to tell the truth about anything is if I select one of their true statements.

Update: so TB noticed something that wasn't meant to be unclear. Faced with clarifying the matter for everyone or allowing her to potentially have an advantage due to her own sagacity, I made a command decision in favour of the latter. Which decision do you think is more neutral?
