I never got to the point that I didn't need materia, at least not that I recall. Especially for white magic and of course materia which is passive in nature such as HP Plus.
I basically use materia (enemies) and mako (allies) to explain all of the character's superpowers.
If only she had the same mother-child relationship that Sepiroth had with his motherQuote:
