What game am I thinking of??

I hear tell the game has been rehabilitated somewhat as people have really got to grips with it over the years, but when I played it not too long after it came out I thought it was barely playable hot garbage.

Really? Someone else figured out that concept makes for idiotic game mechanics before we got Crisis Core?
