Like many folk here I was 11 when I played my favorite FF (VII) but I only got a few hours into it and it didn't click with me until I replayed it 9 years later.

Nothing like the glow of memberberries to color one's experience of their best and worst times. The first Final Fantasy title I became familiar with was Final Fantasy IV (then known on the SNES as Final Fantasy II). But I didn't actually play. I only had the privelege of watching my cousin fight Cagnazzo.
The first game I played and completed in the series was Final Fantasy VII and it's been my fave ever since. I picked it up at Hollywood Video (back when rental stores provided game rentals) the second it became available. Prior to this, the last Squaresoft game I had played was either SaGa Frontier or the PlayStation release of Chrono Trigger.
So to answer the question, in 1997, I was 13.
