I'm fond of "Sesquipedalian," myself.
also a good one. That was our "long word that we should know" in 3rd grade.
I've always been fond of 'defenestration', however many people seem to think that it sounds like a bizarre sexual practice, so fortune seldom presents one with a satisfactory opportunity to use it.
It's my favourite word of all time, though, so I try to use it whenever possible.
This forum needs a 'defenstrated' smiley...
defenstration could be part of a strange sexual ritual, perhaps.
but defenestration is not a word which describes itself, unlike sesquipedalian.
Simply stated, it is sagacious to eschew obfuscation. ~ Norman Augustine :D
It describes itself if you know fenestra is Latin for window, or fenster is German for window. And honestly, who doesn't know that.
Defenestration refers to death by falling out of a window. The word itself is not self-referential, as sesquipedalian is.
(I.e, the statement "sesquipedalian is a sesquipedalian word" is true, whereas the statement "defenestration is a defenestrative word" makes no bloody sense at all)
But it sounds cool.Quote:

This definition is cool too (especially #5 xD):
defenestration
n. [mythically from a traditional Czech assasination method, via SF fandom]
1. Proper karmic retribution for an incorrigible punster. "Oh, ghod, that was _awful_!" "Quick! Defenestrate him!"
2. The act of exiting a window system in order to get better response time from a full-screen program. This comes from the dictionary meaning of `defenestrate', which is to throw something out a window.
3. The act of discarding something under the assumption that it will improve matters. "I don't have any disk space left." "Well, why don't you defenestrate that 100 megs worth of old core dumps?"
4. Under a GUI, the act of dragging something out of a window (onto the screen). "Next, defenestrate the MugWump icon."
5. The act of completely removing Micro$oft Windows from a PC in favor of a better OS (typically Linux).
I would love you forever if you did that.Quote:
