I dunno, that happened with my Rikku. She started at 3000 damage a hit, and gradually lowered to 750, and never died. Paine on the other hand, died quite a bit, a stayed at 4000 everytime.
As for Mix, that does wonders. I gained Elixer while fighting Angra Mainyu. I finished Ether at the beginning of the battle, and by the time it was over, I had gained Elixer.
