If people really feel the need to go around the swear filter because they don't want to think of anything better to say, they can find MB's where it's perfectly okay to do so and I won't object to whatever they do there. At this MB, while no-profanity is still one of the rules, they will get a warning from me for going around the swear filter. If I have to give too many warnings to the same person over and over I will get very upset.
-
...and you don't want to see her when she's upset.
-
heh, that didnt work that well.
-
(I just realized the filter prevents the word from being stored, just puts it as spaces.)
Look, I don't have anything against the swear filter. I don't even cuss, save maybe for three words (crap [forgot that one?], f-word, s-word) which I use scarcely and only in valid contexts. What I find silly, and that Unne found "confusing", is how it's configured to show only one space.
If we're not allowed to disagree with that, might aswell ban the word "feedback".
-
For the record, I agree with Endless. Anything would be better than a single space replacing all the swear words. I don't care if they get replaced with " " instead of "", but it's just plain ugly and disorienting the way it is now.
-
And thus, the another step is taken down the slippery slope to perdition...
-
If people wouldn't swear, there wouldn't be any distorting spaces. :)

Where did I say that you couldn't disagree? Sorry if I worded something that gave that impression. You can disagree all you want. :)

I think **** still sends the message that we don't allow swearing, and it also allows me to keep my sanity. If people wouldn't swear, we wouldn't need the filter, yeah, but people do swear, and even though their posts are being turned into gibberish, the avid swearers don't even seem to notice. If they cared about not sounding like an idiot, they wouldn't be swearing in the first place. Disappearing words is only hurting those of us who attempt to read these posts, not the people who are posting them.
I don't know that you can turn the filter into multiple spaces, such as 4 spaces for a 4-letter swear word. Multiple spaces are contracted into one space by HTML unless you use an escape code. That's why I suggested ****.
-
It is multiple spaces, from what I see, and it does excatly what you say. So that's out.
-
Just become an admin and do it yourself, Unner.
-
How about if you do it for me and I hide under my bed.

Well I still like this new filter because this way the profanity is less noticable when you first look at the screen, but I really can't take credit for it. All I did was voice my opinions.
I really don't mind having skulls or **** though as long as I don't get chastised for asking people to watch their language because, regardless of what shows up on the screen, they are still using profanity instead of thinking of something better to say. Yes, I agree that there is a place for it in some posts, but those are rare, in my opinion.
-
I just had a wonderful(ly silly) idea.
What about you replace * by <3?
"I feel like <3<3<3<3"
"<3<3<3<3 you!"
Ok, I'll go hide in a ball now.
-
That's cute. I like that. :)
