Actually, he didn't have happy ending. Watch closely at his face when Balamb garden flies over him. He's sad. Because he made wrong choices and didn't get what he really wanted to be: SeeD. He chose to be Edea's knight because he didn't become to SeeD. Ok, I know he claims he has always wanted to become a sorceress' knight but it's because his rivalry with Squall and he can't admit he really wanted to be something he didn't but his rival did. If there had been some good sorceress he had pry made a better choice. He's seen as evil because he is rival of Squall, who is your main character (and who is one of those stupid '...whatever' guys) but... I hope you get my point, with my english skills i'm not able to explain it any better.
