An argument formed on the basis of the clothing can't stand, anyway. Both Male and Female Black Mages wear pants in Final Fantasy: Tactics:

Linkage to the concept art of both Black Mage genders.
Female Black Mage Sprite.
Male Black Mage Sprite.

Besides, the Black Wizard (more powerful form of the Black Mage) in Final Fantasy I is obviously Male:

Obviously intended to be Male, then.

I guess then that if it has no long hair comming out of the bottom of the hat, we can assume it's male? And, I thought Daryl was a guy name. Anyway, since FF1, we have never really gotten a look at the face behind the cleverly-placed shadow.

There's alot of females who dress up as males. I would go for female even if it had beard.

Well, I can even tell beter. All the charachters in FF I are ment to be males. Look it up in the game guide you get with it. Even at the White Mage it says "he". So Black Mage is obviously male. And by the way, didn't anyone notice neither of the charachters says what, while normally women would talk the ears of your head, so they are male.

Black Mage is such a blatant rip-off of Orco, it's not even funny. And for all of the unenlightened, Orco is a mage character from He-man.
