I usually name my characters their original names, but this last playthrough, I told my roommate I'd name all my characters after random everquest characters that he sees at the time (since he is always playing everquest).
So this is how it turned out. Oh god, I CAN'T WAIT TO GET MY NAMINGWAY CARD!
Zidane > Skyefax (the only one I didn't use an EQ name)
Steiner > Lanrad
Dagger > Silana
Vivi > Nindiil
Freya > Thikia
Amarant > ?? I can't remember.
Eiko > Kisila (This one might be wrong, but it's something close)
Quina > Owenn

Zidane - Schimo (or something... I was young... and asked what I shoulfd name him to a guy, and he said this, I was stupid to believe him...my mom named him Rat Boy)
I can't really rember the rest... but... I think it was
Dagger - Misty (mom was Sidney)
Vivi - (I forgot, but my cousion named him Tarface)
Armanat - Just "Red" I think...
I'll have to look on my save file to check... but after finding Garnet's real name I always named her that, also, her real name is my real name, found that werid...

That's all I remember. Second time I kept their names as usual, but for some reason I liked using my own names back when I first played. xD

For some reason changing names in FFIX makes it lose some of the plot appeal.
Other than that, it's nice to see how different cultures/names work their way in here.
Zidane>>Daniel (ahem, you needn't guess)
Steiner>>Lachlan (heavy names, eastern european sounding)
Vivi>>Adam (I have a friend who's older than me and about his height ^_^)
Dagger>>Rhi (A friend)
Freya>>Megan (Another friend)
Quina>>Quina (It...no...reason...changing...)
Amarant>>Morgan (Another friend, redhead)
Eiko>>Jess (A friend)

I don't change my characters names that much...
Sometimes I call Steiner 'Rusty'... And I name Garnet/Dagger after any random objects in my room...
'A dagger, huh? Then from now on, I shall be called.... SPOON!'
Yeah, something like that.

I gave them names of my closest friends and when i changed them i gave them hate names like fagg and idiot!!

Me and my mate liked these names. We like it when Zidane keeps yelling about Panties and Amarant calls himself The Flaming Spud!

When Garnet asked me about her new name, I named her Garnet again. The second time through I named her Avery for some reason.

I'm a name purist, but my little brother came up with some interesting ones:
Zidane=Dr. Ear
Vivi=Shrimpy
Steiner=CrUnCh
and Dagger=Shaq
(he's only on disc one)

I kept most names the same. The only names I changed were:
Vivi- Virent :tongue:
Dagger- Ellie
Second time:
Dagger- Ellie

I only changed Zidanes name to mine on my first play through. All the other times and games I just keep to there original name

Zidane = Izzy (Nickname I like)
Garnet = Adel (It's german for nobel)
Vivi = Cody (A friend of mine)
Steiner = Wallace (He just sounds so hilarious when he says "I am Captain Adelbert Wallace of the Knights of Pluto!)
Freya = Elone (I just liked the name)
Quina = Dumb (It's funny hearing everyone talk about him)
Eiko = Can't remember... Oh well
Amarant = Dippy (The funniest! I am the legendary Flaming Dippy!)
2nd Playthrough;
Zidane = Gale
Garnet = Jack (As in Jack Knife, also a nice bit from Riddick... ;) )
Vivi = Demi (Love that spell)
Steiner = Reichen (Dunno just came to me)
Freya = Eloise (Again I dunno...)
Eiko = Eziel (Dunno... names just like to pop up)
Amarant = Ned (hehe Flaming Ned)
Quina = King (Pure laughter of this one!"
