The electoral college is about as obsolete as the Senate is. It was originally designed as a counterbalance to the popular vote similarly to how the Senate counterbalances the House of Representatives.
EDIT: Although, I would like a little more certainty that the Electorates would vote for whichever candidate they say they probably will vote for.
