Tom cruise is freaking crazy.
I saw, We Dont Live Here anymore instead. But ill try and squeeze this one in only cause its Speilberg
What ?! The aliens wanted to kidnap Tom Cruise to create global panic and anarchy ?! God help us !!!
well I always say this to folks who thought that this movie was a ID4 ripoff:
you have to remember the original book wasnt really About "humans versus aliens"
sure that was the premise, but it was more then just that.
it was about survival, not from a soldiers point of view but from the common man who had no military experience or anything.
you also have to remember that the original book was the first of its kind, that before it there were no aliens to think about.
HG Wells was a man way ahead of his time, a man of the late 1800's he concidered possibilities that no one else had [except Verne and a few others]
Wells always had a very interesting way of telling things, he always thought about possibilites.
but one thing worries me is that already most concider this a typical alien invasion flic, after seeing movies like INDIPENDANCE DAY and SIGNS most may shoo this off as just another alien invasion film when the original book was the mother of all alien invasions.
hell even I have my doubts, for me Speilburg has not really had a good film since Shindlers list and whatever came in between was either okay [saving private Ryan] or didnt impress me at all [AI]
I just dont know
but in the ORIGINAL storyline the aliens did not plan thier invsion for a thousand years, it was more of a recent venture [say at least 100 years of planning]
also remember that the book was made in the 1800's [1898 to be more concise]... not in 2005, not 1995, hell not even 1953... or 1938.
this was a time of posibility, when sci fi was in its infancy...
there were no A Bombs, N bombs or even Q bombs.
there were no airplanes, no tanks... all of that had not been invented yet.
always remember that HG Wells was a man way ahead of his time, and when he wrote the original book it was a hell of a surprise to everyone.
but now lets look at today:
today movies like Indipendance day have taken the world by the balls and have shown them the way alien flicks have become after the war of the worlds, big budget films with loads of explosions.
but war of the worlds wasnt meant to be like thtat, about big explosions and such... it was about survival.
even Signs had this, no explosions... just survival.
by all costs Signs is more dedicated to War of the worlds then ID4 is, it was about how the everyday man would deal with something like a large invasion.
now to call the ending of war of the worlds stupid [the whole aliens die because of bacteria plot] kind of makes you look stupid... sorry to say.
I know you have been spoiled by ID4 and the like
but as I said there were no computers in Wells time, no magical way of killing all the aliens and have humans win by some messed up way.
if anything it was ID4 that had the stupid ending, a computer virus is fine but for the humans to get into the alien operating system so easily seems so redicculus... unless the aliens ran on windows 95 :P
War of the worlds had a secnse of realisim... well at least the book
I HIGHLY suggest you all read it before totally dismissing the movie and the name "war of the worlds"
and see the books true meaning
I have yet to see this movie, but that isn't the point of the post.
I read the book a few years ago in school, and vaguely remember a point being made that although to us the Alien Invasion is horrific and terrible, to the Aliens themselves it's like killing Ants.
So I ask this, is a child purpously stepping on an ant no better than the Aliens?
Is the hunting to extinction of the Dodo the same thing?
Do you think if we were to discover new primative life on a planet, and in comparison, us humans were to these primative aliens, as the aliens in the book/movie were to us, would we invade them and destroy them given the motives, just the same as happened to us in the book/movie?
I'm going to see it tomorrow. I've read all your posts and it sounds like a good movie, worth watching. But it sounds scary. Is it scary? Like nightmare after watching it scary?
no its not nightmare like scary... unless youre frightenened of robots... then you might have nightmares... i didnt think it was scary... made me jump a little, but not out of fear, out of suprise! the most annoying thing about this film has to be Dakota Fanning.... at first she is all smart and some of the stuff she says is sort of funny, but then she continually screams through the film.... which is really annoying... i havent ever heard a 10 year old scream so much! but you should go and see it, its not that scary, although you might jump a couple of times!
I wouldn't mind seeing it, but the things that are putting me off are the fact its set in modern day America and from what I've heard its about a guy trying to save his Kids?
And it has jets and shotguns.
So from what I've seen it doesn't stay true to the original text at all and to me seems like a comerciallised Hollywood souless picture.
Is it like this?
I wanted 1800's action!
"I say old chap, if it isnt one of those blasted Alien fiends."
"Well, that is a bit rum, isn't it?"
"Rather...he's interupted high tea. Barnabus, be a stout fellow and give the cad the thrashing of a lifetime, theres a good man."
If only....
Chaos
urm yea, theres guns n tanks... not sure about jets though... dont remember them, ahh well! yea its basically focused on tom cruise tryin 2 save his kids from the aliens, rather than whats happening all over the world... but hey its hollywood, its what i expected... i wouldnt think its tht close to the original text, i think its definitly an updated version.. so if your a fan of the original (not that i have read it) im not sure you would be a fan....
Maybe not, but then it isn't every day earth gets ripped apart by Aliens is it.Quote:

have you seen the film?? its the high pitched squeal of a scream.... it annoyed me anyway.... but its a good film, dont get me wrong on that, i just thought her scream was over the top...
Nope, I plan on seeing it tommorow though.
