Oddly enough, July 4th, 1776 wasn't our day of indepedence. September 3, 1783 could be more accurately considered our independence day. Also, The Declaration of Independence was signed on July 2nd, 1776, and the British did not know about it until the following month.
Nontheless, July 4th is widely recognized, so I'll recognize it too. Happy b-day, USA. :)

Why not consider April 18, 1775, then, for the Shot Heard Around the World?
Because the British-American colonies were still under the control of the British at that time. The same goes for July 4th, 1776. A declaration of independence doesn't mean much if you don't act on it.
Actually, I just wanted to look smart by citing an obscure date. :p
