From my "Official Nintendo's Player's Guide" for Final Fantasy "III":
"Special Low-Energy Attacks
All of the characters have special attacks that they execute only when their HP is running dangerously low--and then only randomly. When a party memer's HP is so low that they kneel to conserve energy between turns at attack, select the Fight command. Occaisonally, the weakened character will respond by using his or her special attack. The chart below shows each member's special, low-energy attack."
So if anything, they were originally called "Low-Energy Attacks"... not quite a fitting name if you ask me.
Edit: Holy crap this Strategy Guide is old!
What page? I have the 'Final Fantasy III Player's Guide' by Peter Olafson. I don't think it mentions Limits (or whatever they are).
I've seen Locke's and Edgar's.
I´ve seen those of Locke, Edgar, Sabin and Cyan.
Locke also has some weird attack where he throws a rotating thingy towards the enemies, for some reason it only happens in the Cave to the Sealed Gate.
Could it be the weapon I´m using?
I've seen Mog's once. I usually try to keep everyone at high HP so it rarely happens that I'm in a position to see them.
If you have a wing edge of fullmoon or one those boomerang weapons, then yes.Quote:

I never did them yet as I recently defeated kefka at the narshe tundra at a low level (10-13) and dunno what to do next. I heard you have to select fight and attack yourself to do it. Is that true?? Or do you just select fight on an enemy??
i've seen terra's and i think i've seen sabin, but it could have been cyan.
i got a question, lets say theres a 1 in 20 chance of seeing the desperation attack when i attack, if i were to equip a offering and the person attacked 4 times would that make it a 4 in 20 chance?
No. The Offering changes Fight to X-Fight, which is still only a single command.
