This just sort of happened around the same time as the concept of "armchair techno", that is, a style of techno meant for listening to, as opposed to dancing to. Both were steps back from the "go go go!" mentality of the hardcore scene, and they fused into this oddball music that lacked funk but was pretty damn cool on its own merits.
Oh wait... You meant... Damnit...
Trance is just what happens when you're fighting so passionately that you glow pink and your techniques become stronger because pink is obviously stronger than not pink. This is evident in the color scheming in the Legend of Zelda games, where the armor strengths go green, blue, red, and magenta, magenta being the strongest because it's so close to pink. DQVIII is also demonstrating the power of pink in its tension system, and Kirby has always been awesome, and he's pink too. The reason this happens is because of basic bio-chemistry involving adrenaline. You see, when you're in a dangerous situation, your adrenalin level rises invoking the "fight or flight" response. However, adrenalin also lowers the pink producing hormones in your brain. This happens so that you won't automatically try to fight your way through every situation with pinkness, since there's only so much your glands can pump out. In order to really use it, you have to calm your nerves to the point where you can control and direct your anger. Bruce Lee totally talked about this in The Tao Of Jeet Kune Do, there's a whole chapter on unleashing your emotions in a single blast. Clearly he had learned to harness his inner pinkness, but only for a brief period. FFIX is a video game, so naturally they can take certain liberties, in this case the characters who can trance have learned how to control the pinkness.
