what's BAD about democracy(for once)?

I'd prefer a course in economics, so they'd know which of the proposed systems stands a better chance in suceeding. Especially since the views of the various parties change over time.

BTW, your explained course is better than I initially thought. I was thinking more along the lines of "politics: the art of making yourself look good and everyone else look bad"...

The bad thing about democracy is that people are, in general, stupid. One intelligent ruler will rule a country better than a whole population with shifting intelligence.

You all didnt have a required Economics and Government course in high school? In California we have one semester of each in our senior year. Probably could have done with more, but still, it's a start.

I had an economics class. No political class so to say but I think a year of US History fits the bill enough.

I had taken Government Studies, one year worth. I have also taken two years of ecconomics. I have never run across the word Republic Democrocy or w/e. It does strike my interest though.

The problem with having a majority vote is the media can scew the minds of many very easily. If we did vote on every issue (I am certain we do have the technology to do so and keep it seamless) I don't think things would get thought through enough. Its hard enough to get our presidents to state any honest truths in debating or in thier campain. We see normal citizens tossing slander arround at this point because they think thier canidate is the best. So one of kerries fans might say Bush is an alien or somthing... It gets really rediculous.

I think our disctricts should basically have more representatives, which take the concesus vote of the people (much like the electoral college, but more personable to each area) These people could then have a cleaner discussion and cast the votes that meet the needs of thier people. This of course would be prone to bribery and such. It would be nice to see laws set up that prevent poloticians from accepting gifts and such, but I could already see the loophole abuse :(.

I also would like to digress that having electoral points per state is a waste of time. Different area's of teh states have different opinions, and having a great density of people living in the major cities, those votes will simply dwarf the numbers on the small scale, and shift all electoral points to a single canidate. I see that as screwing the system more than anything.

A constitutional Republic is the kind of government that you are living in currently. Imagine if everything was really decided by the majority. Don't like Black people down south? Well, hell, lets have a majority vote to restrict their rights. Democracy allows for an opression of the people, a Republic does not.

Aristotle warned against direct democracy, calling it "mob rule", as I recalled.

Those "idiots" are just as effected by voting as the ones with sticks up there asses. Theyre entitled to vote just as much as anyone else is.

Also the public is ignorant when it comes to long boring areas or other many little bits of peaces of everyday nation ruling that is important that the normal person just doesnt know anything about nor cares about.

How the hell do YOU know more about what's better for people than they do? What unique knowledge of the universe gives you (or any other person) a say over what's better for a majority of others?

I've found that when somebody says "Some people don't deserve a say in the politics of their country," they're usually talking about people who *gasp* have a different opinion on things than them.
