Origin of smurf

I bet it was stolen from Family Guy. It went something like "Hey did you see the smurfs on smurfette?" Yeah, Smurf, I could smurf the smurf out of that smurf" or something like that. It was funny anyway.

I always thought it came because on the old TV show, the smurfs would replace random words with "Smurf, Smurfing, Smurfiest" and so when people wanted to say something not so nice, they self-censored with the word "smurf".

I would like to state that the best censor of recorded messageboard history was at Watch Out For Snakes, where smurf was "tango"

as in, "go tango yourself you tangoing tangoer"

and "Tango's for two"
