I felt that way in the beginning. I hated that it was online and wouldn't last forever... that I couldn't line it up on the shell with all of the rest of my collection and go back and play it another day. I didn't play it for a year after the US release and then finally I caved in and I love it.
Honestly, MMORPGs that don't suck to begin with have very long lives. After around 3 years FFXI is still in its infancy compared to other MMOs that despite lowered populations are still around to this day. It was only a year ago that we had to add more servers to make room for all of the players. The diminish of players hasn't even begun. I'd say the game still has several years before it starts to dwindle in players... at least 2 or 3 more. At that point they will start to consolidate servers but all that means is the same number of people you are used to playing with on perhaps a different server.
FFXI could easily be around for another 5 years and I'm fairly certain you could get your fill from it in that time. Just don't expect the same things you expect from offline games. If you open yourself up for new experiences I think you'll find the game rather fresh and enjoyable.
Could someone tell me when EQ started? Its still running even now, and UO too.
As SE stated, they wont shut it off if you guys still have interest in it.
So all in all, you shouldn't worry about anything dying anytime soon.
I'm not sure about EQ but I know that UO is about 10 years old now... thus my point. I know there are some older MMORPGs that are more text based that are still happening.
Also, a lot of old games that lose support by their parent company get taken up by private servers. Granted support will cease and the owners of the private servers can operate a little more loosely but I don't think the game will ever die 100%... especially within the amount of time you might actually wish to play it. You can just move on to a private server and people who want to give it a shot might be able to check it out on a private server long after SE has cancelled support for it (which I don't forsee happening for quite some time)
play FF1 or FF5 if you want something offline and somewhat close to FFXI...
And from the look of things, FFXII is very similar to FFXI as well. I guess it'd be a good alternative to FFXI.Quote:
