Play Seven and Eight first just to get the REferances in IX. You dont need to get the references to enjoy it, but its always entertaining.

Play whichever, whenever. You can get the early ones (I-VI) for NES and SNES. Or PS if you want. Im an FFVII 'fanboy' but play FF8 first is my advice.
