I always thought it just took a lot of energy out of them, and they were SO exausted it just killed them.

The Final Aeon is what kills the summoner. It cannot be controlled.

This says "Further still, Yu Yevon merging with a Final Aeon would sever the psychic bond between the summoner and the aeon, resulting in a psychic backlash that would kill the Summoner who had just defeated Sin."

Yeah see it would be cool

Thats why Yu Yevon posseses your own aeons at the end, and makes them attack against you. If you had used the final aeon it would have controlled that and killed you with it.
