You can't rename any cards. You can play anybody by pressing square.Quote:

You can't name a majority of the characters. Just Squall, Rinoa, her dog, and the GFs.
I remember that you can't name Quistis, Irvine, or Zell.
Well but mine I can name squall and all in the beggining
