STRINATI, Dominic (2004). Chapter 2 'The Frankfurt School and Culture
Industry' in An Introduction to Theories of Popular Culture 2nd
edition. Routledge,
London
In this book, Strinati goes through a number of theories of popular culture
and their relevance to us today. In this second chapter of the book, the
Frankfurt School and the idea of culture industry is discussed. Strinati
sets out the history and
the theories within the Frankfurt School's philosophy and although he
acknowledges the reasons why the Frankfurt School has come to be neglected
by those studying culture, his assessment of this school of thought is not a
bad one and it does appear as if he is mounting a defense for the school
that is often "the target at which...criticisms are directed." This is
particularly unique as much of what Theodor Adorno, a key figure of the
Frankfurt School, has said of culture gets disregarded by sociological
thinkers today. Strinati's embrace of Frankfurt School is also an embrace of
Marxism as the two schools of thought do not differ dramatically, where the
Frankfurt School focuses on culture industry, Marxism focuses on economic
industry.
Woo, pasted part of my assignment. :p
They're shooting a movie in Corner Brook and they want men with long hair and full beards for extras.
It says "The message you have entered is too short".
