Wow... I never have enough Gil to the buy the lifetime pass on the first visit.:(
The pass is definitely pricy the first time you're there. You should save it till the second time you're there, 'cause Cosmo Canyon is next and the weapons are expensive and they have HP and MP+ materias that are pretty nice to have.
I usually don't get the Life-time pass on my first time in Gold Saucer, but I'll get it later in the game, usually when I return to Gold Saucer for the date sequences.
The lifetime ticket grants you free access to the Gold Saucer.
