sounds stupid but games that shaped my childhood are pokemon blue and yellow. i spent hours playing those things and i guess they were officially my first rpgs! :rolleyes2
but at the moment my personal favourites (and they change all of the time) are Skies of Arcadia Legends and Final Fantasy X
I cant answer the question on whats the greatest RPG, but I can give my favourite. FFVII, I wish I could give a better answer but I dont want to lie.

But me personally, I like Chrono Trigger and Tales of Phantasia.
I am going to say Zelda:Ocarina, even though I can already hear the cries of 'it's not really a role playing game.'
