I've started my four Thief challenge which I'm also going to take to level 90. I'll take a pic when I get home.
Tore through the Ice Cave like a man possessed. It wasn't the den of horrors that I remember it being. Did they nerf it for the Origins version or something, or did my mad overlevelled party come in handy? Anyway, airship, class change and fire fiend all done and dusted (in that order) and I'm at level 24. I mean, I'm pretty sure I was level 24 when I beat the damn thing last time anyway, and I'm also sure Origins levels are identical to those on the NES (at least when you're not playing on Easy mode) so yeah, kick ass and all that.
Also, I don't know what the hell Unne's problem with Black Belts are. Seriously, mine, dearest Allie, causes an ungodly amount of damage, and it's definitely more than my two sword guys manage. It's beautiful to behold.
Mine dearest Paul is starting to suck as a red mage, but I just smile and accept this 8)
I have a pet theory that unne only disses the BB because he doesn't want people using them and discovering the delights of them so he can horde them for himself.

Currently I'm running around looking for Astos. I haven't found him yet, but I've run into a bunch of crazy Dwarves. Yay!
Boo, it's all about Erdrick's grave in Elfland.
Slaughtered Kraken, got a crash course in Lefeinish. I slowed down 'cause I've been distracted. Ghosts in the Sea Shrine are ridiculously overpowered, so I had to level a few times in case I ran into a gang of them (they cause paralysis and you can't run away).
Den is currently a L27 Knight equipped with the Defense, and all the Opal armors. I have a ProRing and Ribbon to be swapped in if needed.

EDIT: lol Bane Sword. Goodnight, sweet prince. It's grinding time! Not sure anymore if I'm gonna do the L45 challenge. We'll see.

Where is this good grinding spot before you fight the lich you people speak of?
Once inside the Earth Cave, walk to the left/east/not right side of the map. Along a wall, there's a spot where every step gives you an encounter. I forget exactly what the monsters are that you find there.
Hill Gigases, with the occasional Lizard friend.

I also found that thumb thing Psy was at.
Fight Weaverns and Frost Wolfs and all.
Also, theres that chest in Earthcave where whenever you step in front of it, you fight "Earth" on the NES version.
Good 300 someodd XP there a fight, and it's every other step.
It's also easily finished in 1-2 rounds with my 2 Fighters and 2 Red Mages.
I think that's the ideal leveling spot right now.

My four Thief party. I've just acquired the Mystic Key and I'm off to plunder. Thinking about taking this party all the way through the optional dungeons since I've never done it before. I figure I'll probably need the cool weapons and armors to make Chaos easier.
Currently level 87... Few more to go, then to max my stats. I know its insane, but I'm doing it. Does that earn me anything? :P
Hitting Level 90 gives you a challenge. That's a pretty impressive feat, I think. :p Takes some serious dedication.

The ability to kill most random encounter groups in a single turn throughout a vast majority of the game is pretty good, I'd say.Quote:

Just spent some time under the sea with the mermaids. :ariel: Problem was, I couldn't find a gift for Unne. He's not a fan of Diamond Gloves or Ribbons, I hear. I found something suitable after many, many fights with Sahagins, who I now loathe!
Camped outside Mirage tower as we speak. I'm pretty amazed that I remembered the exact location of the airship, and how to get the Oxyale, even though it's been five years since I last played FF1.
EDIT: All four crystals now restored! I think I shall grind to 30 and then see if I can't knock me down some Chaos.
Isn't War Mech a challenge? I was hoping for an excuse to beat him. :(

I've finally had a bit of time to play today, but I've just been hanging around trying to level up a bit. Hitting Level 7 seemed to help immensely, since my Fighters decided to start taking double swipes at things. Hooray!
My MAsters are taking 16-18 swipes, it's fun. 1500+ damage.Quote:

I took down Lich last night at around level 24ish. Going to skip Marilith for the time being and head for class change and spell-casting items first.
Raided all the "mystic" treasures and then got the TNT. Gave that to nerick and blew up the canal to melmond (take that enviroment!)
Only level 36 because I was just too impatient to get up to L50. Beating Chaos took much luck. One time he SLO2'd me so I couldn't attack for 400dmg. Another time he pounded away with physical attacks instead of using magic. And then there were all the times where he CUR4'd himself. But I won!
Finally beat Earth Cave! Now I can move on to other things... I forget what they are at the moment.
Reflections on a solo Fighter/Knight party:
It gets through the game really quickly. I didn't die as much as I would've for any other solo party. However, getting paralyzed really pissed me off. No solo party again for me for a while. I'll probably play an old classic, the Fi/xx/WM/BM party next.

It took me an embarrassingly long time to find Astos, but apparently being at level 11 was a little high for the fight--he barely touched me at all. Punk!

Current status; Levelling in Chaos Temple, Level 68 RM Party. We don't get bonus points for completing the DoS/PSP dungeons do we?
It's worth it though, even if there are no bonus points, I mean, I got a 4th Ribbon, so that makes me happy. And speaking of bonus dungeons, Earthgift Shrine and Hellfire Chasm cleared, onto Lifespring Grotto. Level 76 party.
Edit: Gilgamesh and Atomos down, Shinryu and Omega are pains in my ass though.
I'm going through the Soul of Chaos dungeons, too. Lifespring Grotto and Whisperwind Cove left to do but I doubt I'll have the patience to do them.
Today I wandered around the Chaos Temple for an hour and a half. I don't know where to go and the random encounter rate is way too high. I had hoped to complete it today... :(

Just reahced Elfheim after not having played the game at all the last couple of days. Currently leveling up a bit and saving up some money for some spells and such, before I apparently have to defeat Astos to wake up the prince.

Having already finished one game of Final Fantasy in less than a week, I decided to play it again. Probably not going for any challenges this time, I just wanna play with this high-powered offense:
I do the exact same thing as Leeza and Maxx Power. Level 35, baby. Chaos Temple is a nightmare and the three-step encounter rate is slowly destroying my soul.
If you're planning on using Temper, FYI it's bugged in the NES version and doesn't work. Neither do the LOCK spells. They actually increase the evasion of enemies.Quote:

Actually, Marilith was easy, but Lich was harder that I thought. A few levels more (2 or 3) sometimes can make the difference. Indeed, the only thing that's disappointed me so far in the PSP version is how freakin' easy it is. I've played the NES version for a while and the Origins version almost until the end... who knows where my savefile is now :( and this one is hardly a challenge.

The front page up until now is all game news, releases, and such like that.
But never have I seen a random announcement concerning a forum event up there.
It's not as if the site and community are Final Fantasy based or anything.
1. Sign of things to come.
2. Trying to get publicity and encourage activity, which are not easy to do.
3. It's actually about Final Fantasy, unlike virtually every other forum event.
I conceed then.
After saving melmond from rotting (even though it still looks the same) I went to crexent lake and got the canoe I would have done more but my emulator was having some issues with saving so I had to fix that.

The difference between Popa and Ava haven't changed.
However the gap between Maxx and Ouch has grown in Maxx's favor.
And to end the update, I took out Vampire with 1 Fire3 and One crit from Ava.
Wow.
2 Fire 3's, and 1 strike from a fighter and Lich went down.
WTF is everyones problem with this guy? I heard he was suppose to be one of the toughest bosses in this game.

Level 45, just gotten the whatever it's called water from the fairy, looking for what to do next. I should go find the Fiend of water but I haven't got the faintest idea about where to look. Pictures soon.
Go to Onrac, it's on the north-western continent near to where you bought the Fairy Bottle. In the bottom-right part of the town you'll find a person next to a sub. Talk to them to proceed.Quote:

If you wanted to purchase it, you'd probably have to go for: PS1 Origins, GBA Dawn of Souls, or PSP FFI Anniversary, unless you have an NES and could find a cart.
You could always emulate one of the above, though. :p
Speeding right on through the game now. Knocked out Lich easily, struggled my way through the Ice Cave (Sorcerors :mad2:), got Floater, got ProRings from Gaia, went to Castle of Ordeal, class changed! Now to Gurgu Volcano and more grinding. Wanna be L25 for Sea Shrine.

i might as well just go find the masamune and go stay in corneria

Forgot what's next. I returned Matoya's crystal, she gave me the herb for the Prince, and I opened all the locked doors to the treasures in the Marsh Cave, Northwest Castle, Temple of Fiends, Elfland Castle and Conelia Castle. Oh well. More tomorrow, I'm sleepy.
Kraken burninated! And he indeed was a piece of cake. Went to Unne, showed him the Rosetta Stone, went to pay a visit to the Lufenians. All is ready for my ascent to the sky!

I don't know why you people say Kraken is so easy. He hits my character for 600 damage before I even get a turn off! Even with Invis and Blink he does ~200 damage per hit, I can't keep up with that!

I think the reason I had so much trouble with him is because I didn't have a balanced setup. Red mage X4 can't really go for the quick kill or sustain themselves like some of the other parties.
Wham blam and Lich goes down. I was a little worried at first because my fighters proved completely ineffective, but thankfully my Black Mage was there to save the day with lots of Fire.
Lich was super easy. I was expecting more.

I just beat Kary. I think I'm overleveled because she was super easy too.
I suppose I should update my progress despite how little I've made. I've currently got the Star Ruby having just beaten the vampire. Hate the Cavern of the Earth. Damn Cockatrices.
As soon as I see then I try to nuke them all with my Black Mage.
They're definitely up there on my list of 'most hated FF enemies', that's for sure. It's just a bit annoying if they petrify two of your characters and you only have one gold needle.

okay, so I had FAST (Master at this point) use the Bane Sword as an item against Tiamat, with TMPR attacking and ZAP! and NUKE using FAST on TMPR and FAST. so the first thing that happens is FAST uses the Bane Sword, BANE connects, Tiamat dies. I was kind of disappointed, actually. GRINDING TIME

okay so i might have used a couple savestates here. notice the unconventional lineup? little old Mechie kept doing 278 damage to the character in the fourth spot on a "monsters strike first" kind of deal, who was originally NUKE. thing is, NUKE doesn't have 278 HP. so I moved TMPR to the fourth spot to absorb that 278 damage, then used FAST (magic) on FAST (character) and TMPR and just pounded away. 8000 EXP each is a nice reward, but that's so torturous.
So I FINNALY beat the ice cave and obtained the FLOATER (its what all true waariors srtive for) Now the airship is mine next stop class change:D :D :D
Took a little break. :D Roaming around in the water temple now, trying to not miss any treasure.
stay in coneria inn, fly to temple of fiends, wander around killing monsters, maybe gain a level, EXIT, fly back to coneria, stay in inn, repeat. that is my game for the next 24 levels.
this is why I never get L50. but I will this time, gosh darn it.
I could easily finish the game right now; all my chars are at Level 99 with the best equipment possible (well, for Red Mages anyway). I want to complete the other optional dungeon but it's quite frankly the most annoying piece of crud I have ever experienced outside of FF12.
The only cool parts about the optional dungeuns are its bosses other than that they're really boring.

Within the central game, no. There are new monsters in the bonus dungeons including the bosses, including a boss in the ToF's bonus dungeon whose form differs depending on what type of seal you opened in what order, with each incarnation a different version. Let it be said that the ToF bonus dungeon is a bitch. I've attempted it about six times and failed each time to get the most powerful form. Not because of my lack of skill, the puzzles are just ridiculously annoying.Quote:

I feel that it's not very good at telling where to go next. I find myself wandering around until I bump into something that's part of the story.
I'm at the elf village now, staring in shock at the price of everything. I bought a few things but only cause I won 5000 gil from getting second place on that number game on the ship :)
If you need any help on where to go next, you could always ask. This part of the game is actually quite linear, but the second half is where people tend to get lost quite a lot. (At least I did)Quote:

Well, it looks like you are playing origins. I don't know a lot about that version, but I'm fairly sure sooner or later you'll stumble across some Phoenix Downs. I think it simply makes going to the clinnic more obligatory, so that they are not completely useless. As for MP restoration, I don't think it's possible to do that without an Inn or a House, but I'm not too sure about that one.
The original game was supposed to be like that, that's why it's so much harder. You need to go to towns to resurrect your characters, to save and to rest.
If you want things easier, emulate the GBA version or get the PSP version.
Or you can be a man and leave them dead.

I didn't play much today, but I managed to complete the Earth Cave. I should've trained more before attempting this dungeon, as I got scared everytime I encountered some Cockatrices (didn't think of bringing Soft potions, luckily I didn't get petrified), and I'd often get into situations like the one below.

So yeah, I was lucky I didn't had to restart every single time. Having an all-fighter party certainly has its advantages.
The vampire was a real whimp. I took him down with Paul before he even got a single shot at me. The same goes for Lich. He had a pretty powerful ICE2 spell (120 dmg!!) but I took him down in round 2. Pitty. Oh well, now I've got my first Orb lightened.

I got lost in the Hellfire Chasm! In the level that looks like the world map. I met the pirate and he told me that I could use the Levistone in the oasis in the desert to get an airship, but I tried (that's where the palm is, right?) and nothing happened. I stopped to grind here. Without being able to equip the Defender and Opal armor (except the bracelet) and without any magic at my disposal, this place became REALLY tough. Dago nearly died three times because I didn't have any means to properly heal myself during battle. I got so frustrated at this dungeon that I litterally began stomping the wall next to me.

The Mirage Tower/Floating Castle became an absolute endless grindfest. I finally feel how hard this game is without the slightest speck of magic. On top of that, I can't equip any new weapons and armour. I even had to sell Xcalbur because my lack of class change. I managed to beat Tiamat and light the final Orb, but I still need to level up not only to beat the final dungeon, but also because I want to complete the Lv45+ challenge.
Only this evening and a day left, this should get exciting. To all people that still need to beat this game, Go for it!

Well, February is over for most of us, but we'll let this go on for the rest of the night. If you're going for Challenges, best finish them soon! However, we'll leave it open for a few days, so anyone going for the Completion challenge can still grab that one, even if it's March. But you'll be SOL if you were going for a Solo, low level, high level, etc. challenge.
