The Red Rose?
Not the Red Rose.
Something that relates to the silver dragon, something which has two forms - the first form is only seen twice.... Hey Rantzien, would you give us a list of the hints you've given so far?
.... can I has a hint
i'm thinking the lifa tree (you visit it twice) and the silver dragon is there at least on of the time...
if not... for the last like dual infinity turned, could it possibly be a math referance, meaning something to do with the number 88 (two infinity signs turned a 1/4 turn?
extendid train of thought:
There I am, at a distance
in the calm after perilous chase - coming to the recently decesed queen Brahne (garnets addopted mother) after being chased down the tree by mistidons.
There I come, to assistance
the argenteous danger to face - The party tryes to go and assist the queen who was attacked by kuja on his silver dragon, turning brahne's summon against her.
Spoken of with filial pride
when yearned for man returned - Dagger (dispite everything the queen did to her) speaks of the good traits she had, possibly wished her father was still alive.
Spoken of no more; I hide
in dual infinity turned - the queen is not mentioned again... and this is where i have no guess.
Ha, I didn't expect anyone to get the "dual infinity turned" part, but like Sid_Highland guessed it does refer to 88.
It's not the Iifa Tree or anything related to Queen Brahne. And sure, here are the hints I've given so far - and a new hint, in bold.
Not an item
Nothing living
"Filial pride" refers to a child proud of their parent, though neither part is the answer itself.
The answer exists in two forms. Only the last line (and partly the line before it) mentions the second form.
The first form is seen at two points in the game, no more, no less. These are on different disks.
The second form is seen as many or few times as you like.
The first two lines refer to the first time the answer can be seen in its first form. The following two lines refer to the only other time.
"Argenteous danger" refers to the Silver Dragons swarming out from the portal to Memoria.
"Dual infinity turned" is a rotten way of saying "88".
There I am, at a distance
in the calm after perilous chase
There I come, to assistance
the argenteous danger to face
Spoken of with filial pride
when yearned for man returned
Spoken of no more; I hide
in dual infinity turned
Does it have something to do with ships using Mist engines? It kind of makes sense in the first stanza, but I'm not sure how that would work into the second.
88 makes me think of the Black Mages using numbers as names.
I haven't read all of the guesses but is it South Gate? You see it once on Disk 1, once on Disk 2 (this is the airship South Gate) and then the second form of South Gate is the foot one which you can see multiple times. Or something, I'm drawing from memory here. (Even though Steiner and Dagger cross on foot at the beginning of Disk 2...)
No to all of that, but in a way you could say South Gate is indirectly involved in one line. Wouldn't try to go on it, but it may be a hint!
Is the answer linked to the background scenery? Or could it be an action?
I'm a bit baffled, it has two forms, and you can see it's first one very close to the end of the game and one somewhere else in the game.... Yet, you can see it's second form as many times as you would like - this leads me to think it's either something within Memoria - something to do with the background scenery, or the answer is in a very different location... maybe on the Red Rose or the Hildagarde 3 or even the Invisible.
It could be said to be part of the background scenery, depending on how you define that.
I still don't remember the other guesses but is it Beatrix? You fight her twice or..wait no I think it's three times. smurf.
EDIT: Way to read the post above Jiro. Erm, it's not Alexander by any chance, is it? I owe you more reasoning than this, but it's really got me stumped and I just hope I can kick someone's mind into gear.
It's not Alexander. Thanks for trying. :)
Bran Bal?
Not Bran Bal. The answer is more obscure - you could play through the game and never learn the name of it.
I hate this riddle. You're too good, Rantz.
I will take another crack at it.
There I am, at a distance
in the calm after perilous chase
There I come, to assistance
the argenteous danger to face
Spoken of with filial pride
when yearned for man returned
Spoken of no more; I hide
in dual infinity turned
There's only one part that really makes any sense to me.
There I come, to assistance
the argenteous danger to face
It's not living and it's not an item. This line refers to the second time you see it in its first form (???). The only thing I see during the battle before Memoria is a bunch of clouds and airships coming to assistance.
The first form is something far away just chillin' after some excitement, a chase scene I assume from the way you worded it. You also say that South Gate is indirectly involved.
The last stanza has me stumped but the one before kind of goes along with the answer that's coming to me.
I think it might be the old freight airship Zidane, Garnet, Steiner and Vivi use to get to Lindblum. It's old and if irrc Zidane says something about being surprised it's still in use (Spoken of with filial pride, when yearned for man returned), it destroyed South Gate to get away from the Black Waltz and to get to Lindblum (There I am, at a distance, in the calm after perilous chase), and it's a ship, so it may have been in the big group of them at the end of the game (There I come, to assistance, the argenteous danger to face)
I have no idea what 88 could refer to though, so maybe that's an indication that I'm wrong. :p
BUT, Rantz says we could go through the whole game and never learn the name, and I don't know the name of that ship. Do you?
Why do FFIX riddlers always pick obscure things? :p
It's not the cargo ship, but that's the closest answer yet. I can tell that you guys are getting tired of this riddle :D, so here's a big hint: yes, the "perilous chase" refers to the chase through South Gate, so the answer is seen shortly after that.
Another hint: The two first lines of the second stanza describe the only time the name of the answer is mentioned in dialogue. The name of the second form can be seen more often, but not in dialogue.
I think you should be able to get it now xD And I like obscure riddles! Still, I try not to do them too often as not everyone appreciates them as much. ;)
Black Waltz #3?
Cid's Brother?
Nope, still nothing living! Who's Cid's brother?
the city of monkeys
Theatre Ship/Prima Vista?
Edit: Actually, I'm thinking a different ship.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fMQJDjD1jkQ
The one seen at 0:31, is it those? If I remember correctly, after a while those ships are seen flying around the map with 2 blimp balloons, shaped like 88's, on top of them, but without them they are only seen in the Lindblum Arrival, and the Assault of the Silver Dragons.
Correct! The ship in question is called the Viltgance. Explanation is as follows.
There I am, at a distance
in the calm after perilous chase
There I come, to assistance
the argenteous danger to face
We have this whole stanza worked out already. First you can see it in Lindblum, in the calm after the perilous chase through South Gate. Secondly you see it when it takes on the Silver Dragons at the portal to Memoria.
Spoken of with filial pride
when yearned for man returned
This, like I said, refers to the only time the ship is named in dialogue. Marsha, the little girl in the Lindblum Business District, tells you proudly about how her father rides a ship called Viltgance ("spoken of with filial pride"). She says this only after her father, whom she and her mother were waiting for, joins them ("when yearned for man returned").
Spoken of no more
Not mentioned again.
I hide in dual infinity turned
As we already established, "dual infinity turned" is a jerk way to say 88, which is the number of the Viltgance card in Tetra Master - its second form. Kind of a mean hint, but with a little research it could have been the key to solving it. ;)
You're up, FFIX Choco Boy!
Ah, ok, I didn't guess the card part cause I didn't know what they were called. Guess it really would have helped, since Tetra Master popped into my head as soon as I saw Viltgance.
Well, since it's become tradition, here comes an obscure FFIX riddle.
Dark and dank, my home is.
I feel hollow, inside.
To my left, your savior,
To my right, your first hint of danger.
What am I?
swamp?
Not a swamp.
vivis grandpas cave
Dagger?
Neither of those two, sorry.
Rantzien I really enjoyed that riddle despite being tough. Keep it up, they're always good fun :D
As for this one, my first thought is of the Black Mages. Particularly one who has already stopped working and is buried, which would cover the dark, dank and hollow inside parts.
The first sign of danger line makes me think early game, but the saviour line throws me off. Unless it refers to Baku, who rescues Zidane in the past and also comes through the left door. The right would then be the first sign of danger because it triggers the battle with Masked Dragon. Or something, I don't really have a guess.
You're correct in thinking that line 4 hints at the game's start, but I'm afraid the rest is wrong.
Not the queen.
Been a few days.
Repost:
Dark and dank, my home is.
I feel hollow, inside.
To my left, your savior,
To my right, your first hint of danger.
Hint 1: Line 4 hints at the game's start.
Hint 2: "Savior" refers to an action performed by the savior.
Vivi Evil Woods with Blank and co?
This is a really obscure guess, but: the hollow tree trunk you pass through by the Prima Vista crash site?
No, right by the Prima Vista you have to run through a hollow tree trunk to get to the monster-infested parts of Evil Forest.
Actually, Legolas, you've got it. Your go!
Oh, cool :D Might've been my luckiest guess ever considering the obscurity of the answer.
Someone else can have my go, though.
See I couldn't even think of that one. I had a log stuck in my head but the only one I could think of was the one with the moogle! But that obviously didn't work with the "first sign of danger".
Nicely done on getting it though!
EDIT: If nobody particularly minds, I wanna steal this go :p
It won't last long so time it right
Activated, you become a sight
Sought after by the one who
Would bring pain and ruin unto you
Lame rhymin' but w/e. Good luck~
trance
Nice and easy for you, nice work.
I'm gonna make a hard one for the first time ever.
Under the climb of the flying green, I request and you must convene. If you wish to pass you must answer my call.
By the shell of the snake my lair is lain, up is death, back is folly, down is impossible, forward is the only path remaining.
There are no men here, though the women be ugly. Who am I and where do I dwell.
Gizamaluke's Grotto the cave with the bells, and its the two moogles on a honey moon i believe. you have to help the wife becouse the husband is under a bell, give her a kupo nut and he comes out, she gives you the holy bell.(which you need).
Theres in the path with the moogle cupple you can climb up but going up leads to a plateau with grande dragons(the flying green). which WILL kill you!(therefore up is certain death). if you go back you can't preceed any further in the game so it is folly. there is no path leading down.
no men and ugly women, i assume is refering the the lamia/s.
Who am I and where do I dwell?
i assume its talking about the moogles, and they dwell near the end of Gizamaluke's Grotto :)
WOW! good job. I guess I shouldnt have added the shell part.
You got it all.
*Yoink*
Trapped, I cannot get out.
But boy, do I need to.
Don't worry, you won't be covered.
Dig to your heart's content,
I'll make sure you don't lose yourself.
kuppo
Yep, your go HAC.
one of many, Im not supposed to be,
under one, but only after the curtain falls on the red.
a longer year I make
The 13th stellezio coin? I don't recall it's name at current...
yep
Born of many, brothers and sisters.
One who denies his heritage.
Another who knows it not.
Taken, as it will be.
Welcome home, hero.
Farewell, villain.
Awaken, and embrace
your reality.
Kuja and Zidane
Mmm, yeah, you've got it. I thought it would at least take a few guesses.
DM? You going to take this riddle, or leave it open?
if he wont, I will!
Oh I'm here. I just dont check this forum as often lately. I'll do the riddle tomorrow afternoon if not, the day after.
In me you can see your reflection
A life sustaining substance keeps me company
I am taller than most others
I have been broken
What am I?
Is it Epitaph?
I'll go with the obvious to get it out of the way. Unne's Mirror?
Nope to both.
kuja?
Is it Zorn and Thorn/ there transformation.
In me you can see your reflection
This line makes me think of a mirror or water - they both have reflective qualities.
A life sustaining substance keeps me company
This makes me think of water even more, but it could also be mist. What does it keep the company of?
I am taller than most others
It's the tallest thing about. I'm wondering if it's the Clyra tree, but that does seem like the answer....I'm not certain if the answer if a living thing (monsters, sentient life being (Iifa Tree boss; Necroron[sp?]); or people (The Qu Clan; the Mages; the Summoners; etc.))
I have been broken
This makes me think it's a mirror, it could also be a statue. It could be a metaphor for a broken heart, or something else.
What am I?
I don't rightly know, I'm going to ask if it's related to Terra - as in, did it originate from Terra and, consequently, Garland?
oh, the third black mage?
Sorry guys not close yet, but Shinwa is thinking on the right path.
You right in that this is referring to water.Quote:
A life sustaining substance keeps me company

Not the Iifa Tree or any of those. May not be living.Quote:

Not a metaphor.Quote:
I have been broken
This makes me think it's a mirror, it could also be a statue. It could be a metaphor for a broken heart, or something else.
Nope. It has no origins in Terra but it has been affected by Garland.Quote:

alexandria? wait, that doesnt sound right.
Im going with alexandria+ the river
You're extremely close.
tallest thing around would be alexander and that sword thing, he gets broken by the invincible. there is a dock inside of the castle, and a statue on the water..... I dont remember what the name of the staue was..... How close am I
Oops I forgot to post here. You are indeed correct. My riddle was referring to the Sword of Alexandria and the body of water that surrounds the castle. You got the floor.
oh, wow, I assumed I'd lost, lets see....
I
Didn't your mother tell you not to point, but if you do, I will give you something good.
II
stolen from its owner, a token of bravery
III
the soul of the beast, captured in form.
Chocobo Forest, Lagoon, and Air Garden?
Is it the stone which Garnets takes with her when escaping Alexandria. Can't remember it's exact name.
nope, nope
I
Didn't your mother tell you not to point, but if you do, I will give you something good.
This makes me think of some sort of guessing game - it might be the Chocobo Hot and Cold, but you don't point....
II
stolen from its owner, a token of bravery
Some thing relating to Tantalus, or, at the very least, - Zidane. An item, or a metaphor....
III
the soul of the beast, captured in form.
I'm guessing it's some sort of key item - or item in general....
NOPE
Over a month dead now.
nope
Chocoboy, why don't you create a side riddle then.
Maybe someone can find out if Depressive Moon whats to continue? I'm a bit busy right now.
what, its my riddle now...
Ah, I'm sorry I didn't know... it has been a while.
Would you repost the riddle with any known hints?
Ah, I must not have looked far enough down on page 19.
Mmm.... do the Roman numbers mean anything?
no, they are seperators
leo stellazio?
nope, there are 3 answers.
Rat Tail, Une's Mirror, and Magical Fingertips?
They are all auction items.
you got two of them. the fingertip (dont point) rats tale (courage)
I think it's something like the Griffon's Heart will be the third one. I can't remember if that's its actual title.
If this is correct, anyone else can take my go.
correct!
I'll take it then, since I got the 1st 2.
A lovely set of scales,
a frozen heart inside.
A short metal of legend,
and reinvigorating cure.
The bell tolls for me.
Who am I?
gizamaluke
Not Gizamaluke.
Eiko
Since it's not Giz I don't have a clue.
Brave Suit?
There are two items referenced...
I guess those items are Holy Bell and something else.... Menu item or scenery item?
Nothing to do with the Holy Bell.
Hmmm....the Alexandria church bell?
Sorry, but I'm still curious weather or not it is a menu item or a scenery/background item.
Both are menu items, and it has nothing to do with the Alexandria church bell.
Hmmm.... I guess it isn't a bell at all...
I seem to be out of ideas..... a hint?
RP:
A lovely set of scales,
a frozen heart inside.
A short metal of legend,
and reinvigorating cure.
The bell tolls for me.
Hints:
There are two items referenced.
The "bell" is not one of these items.
Been about a week now. Anyone still trying my riddle?
I'm beginning to think that the 'reinvigorating cure' refers to the natural curative springs.... The one in Quan's Cave perhaps.
Nothing to do with the Qus.
Okay.... Does the 'reinvigorating cure' refer to the natural curative springs in general?
Nope. It refers to one of the 2 items.
Does 'reinvigorating cure' refer to the Elixir item?
Not the Elixir.
Okay, does it refer to the Remedy?
Not the Remedy.
RP:
A lovely set of scales,
a frozen heart inside.
A short metal of legend,
and reinvigorating cure.
The bell tolls for me.
Hints:
There are two items referenced.
The "bell" is not one of these items.
I am a monster.
Ah, okay.
The two items are ones you can steal (or mug)?
Marilis :hello:
Not the Marilis. And yes, Shinwa.
I'm thinking the second item is a weapon that has cure properties, I can't think of it though. Haven't got much, unfortunately.
What you're likely thinking of, Jiro, is Healing Rod...
I'm going to ask, is the monster a boss?
Yes.
Okay, yes to the boss question.... Is that a yes to the Healing Rod?
Silver Dragon :hello:
Not the Silver Dragon. And no more direct questions unless it's a guess for the answer. It becomes way too easy when we can just play 20 questions, lol. But, no, not the Healing Rod.
Sea Lion in the ice cavern :hello:
Yes, it is the Sea Lion boss.
A lovely set of scales, - blue scales all over it
a frozen heart inside. - it even changes color based on the boss's status
A short metal of legend, - Mithril Dagger can be stolen
and reinvigorating cure. - Ether can also be stolen
The bell tolls for me. - Black Waltz No. 1 calls him with a bell.
Woot, I figured it out with a little help from my friends! Let me think for a bit and I will post a new riddle tomorrow :hello:
Alright everyone, here is my very first attempt at a riddle, so if it sucks, I apologize for my lack of creative skill in advance :hello::
Dazzle the Ladies
Dazzle the Lords
Battle with gems
Not with swords
4 for 1 and 1 for all
For a shield that's magical
Its shimmering shine
Is quite divine
Its healing is grand
With more on hand
Carbuncle?
It's not the Auction House is it?
Why didn't I think of Sea Lion for Chocoboy's riddle? Must have been a bit more interested in getting the cure thing....
Hmm, the new riddle....
Dazzle the Ladies
Dazzle the Lords
Seems to be referring to the begging play, where one needs to impress the nobles to get an item.
Battle with gems
Not with swords
This brings the Alexander summoning thing to mind, unless I'm way off.
4 for 1 and 1 for all
For a shield that's magical
Brings to mind the four elemental magic mirrors that one attains at Ipsen's Castle.
Its shimmering shine
Is quite divine
Brings to mind the Shimmering Isle, unless I'm off course with this one.
Its healing is grand
With more on hand
The healing that occurs with the gemstones one holds.
This entire thing makes me think the answer is an enemy....
You get a moonstone from performing the play to perfection. Steiner picks it up off the Queen.
A ruby?
In the future please give your answers in the form of a question! :p
Yes, the answer is the moonstone:
Dazzle the Ladies
Dazzle the Lords Impress 100 nobles and Queen Brahne
Battle with gems
Not with swords Give the friendly Jabberwock an emerald
4 for 1 Put the 4 colored gems on the statue
and 1 for all
For a shield that's magical The moonstone changes Carbuncle's summon ability to Pearl Light (Protect and Shell on the whole party)
Its shimmering shine
Is quite divine The moonstone and elixir synthesize pearl rouge (halves Holy damage and increases Water damage)
Its healing is grand
With more on hand More moonstones = more HP when used as an item
Not the best riddle, but it was my first, so yeah...anyway it's Jiro's turn to make a riddle! :hello:
The big stage and the big crowds
The small stage and the big heads
He's not a wannabe but he plays one
I'm his biggest fan, no. 1
Shouldn't give you too much trouble guys ;)
Lowelle?
If it's not Lowell (who loves himself) then it might be the card seller's niece (he asks for Lowell's autograph for her stating she is his biggest fan)! :hello:
It is indeed Lowell Bridges!
Four parts to my whole,
one gets destroyed,
another cut in half,
the other two remain intact.
One piece has top, middle, and bottom.
You may exit the bottom of this piece,
you may exit the top,
or the middle of another which has no other.
Foot, air and foot, in that order only.
Where am I?
The airship which is made of the Blue Narcissis?
Not the BN airship.
Oh god it's one of the Gates. South Gate I think.
Nope, not South Gate.
That place in the Desert Palace?
Sorry, no.
Edit: I'm deleting my original guess, and going with a new one.
I'm going to guess Lindblum.
Four parts to my whole,
In the beginning of the game, the available areas are: Theater District, the Industrial District, the Business District, and the Grand Castle.
one gets destroyed,
another cut in half,
the other two remain intact.
The Industrial District gets destroyed completely when Brahne used Atmos. I'm not quite certain which of the other three locations get 'cut in half', but I'm thinking it is the Business District. The Grand Castle and the Theater District remain whole.
One piece has top, middle, and bottom.
The Grand Castle contains the Base Level - the bottom, the Middle Floor, and the royal (Cid's family) quarters - the top.
You may exit the bottom of this piece,
you may exit the top,
or the middle of another which has no other.
Foot, air and foot, in that order only. There are three methods of entering this place: the Dragon's Gate which is a land exit, Serpent's Gate which is a sea port, and the Falcon's Gate which is the aerial port.
The Middle Floor of the castle lets you roam the city, which only has the Air Cab travel - no other method. While the royal quarters lets you use the telescope.
Where am I?
Lindblum.
That could be it too. WHY ARE SO MANY ANSWERS OBVIOUS
Yep, Lindblum. The district that gets cut in half, though, is the Theatre district. The bottom half gets cut off because the stairs get destroyed.
Ah.... I thought something was off.
Any way, I'm leaving the floor open.
Two halves of a whole,
one forward, one backward.
We are Yin and Yang.
Try to separate us,
and the skies themselves
will try to destroy you.
Who are we?
zorn and thorn
Yep, Z and T. Don't let this thread die, HC!
Yes, HC, I'd like to see if you're willing to make a riddle.
I tell you what I can,
Nothing more than that.
I am nothing like my brothers,
not a single little bit.
My partner is gone -
he's moved on for good.
Now you must consult others,
to know what I should
be able to tell you,
but I could say no more.
A failed experiment,
an incomplete archive of lore.
What am I?
Kinda clueless, but I'm gonna guess Kuja.
Nope, not Kuja.
Not Vivi, is it?
No, not Vivi.
Mikoto
Not Mikoto either.
Hint: It's a very obscure answer.
Genero
How is that a hint?:lol::confused:
It's one of my special hints. Were you never around for my riddles? lol
Not Genero.
Tantarian
Not the Tantarian, either.
Something tells me I could find the answer in Daguerro.
"My partner is gone -
he's moved on for good." Something with Sir Fratley?
Not Sir Fratley, and cannot be found in Daguerro.
Hm... Is the answer found in Treno?
Not in Treno.
Another hint: It can't be found in any of the inhabited cities.
Anything to do with moogles?
Oh.... Rats.
Uh, Mogera (I forget the spelling of her name) - her books at least. She's a reference to the first game. On the right track or not?
Please, only one guess at a time. And none correct so far.
"inhabited" cities? What cities aren't inhabited then. Maidan Sari (sp?) is mostly uninhabited lately. Perhaps the answer lies there.
I thought through all of the cities I could think of that are uninhabited and I couldn't come up with anything that fits the riddle. I don't know that Madain would be considered uninhabited.
Quan's Dwelling, yeah
Guess: Vivi
Ipsen's castle, it does not look like any of the other towns and "My partner is gone - he's moved on for good" might be related to one of the Ipsen's plays.
In that castle you also get some information about the Earth, Fire, Water and Wind shrines (or caverns, I can't remember correctly), but you didn't learn about the guardians and traps, so that might mean "an incomplete archive of lore".
Nothing is as misleading as Thingfish's riddle.
Not Ispan's Castle, Madain Sari, or Quan's Dwelling.
On a side note, it's nice to see this thread getting some attention again.
It is nice to see this one getting attention again. Hm..... Could the answer refer to the Ice Cavern?
Not the Ice Cavern, either.
Hm.....
One of the two Roo tunnels?
It kind of smells like Burmecia, but I can't think what else would fit the clues...
(Or maybe I'm just gassy.)
Neither Roo, or Burmecia.
I'm clueless.. another hint, please?
Could it be the Ragtime Mouse?
This would be a reference to the Agares enemy in Ipsen's castle, who are physically similar enough to be called his "brothers".Quote:
I am nothing like my brothers,
not a single little bit.
The Agares enemy always appears alongside a Gargoyle, but not the Ragtime Mouse.Quote:
My partner is gone -
he's moved on for good.
The answers to his quiz questions are found throughout the game.Quote:
Now you must consult others,
to know what I should
be able to tell you,
but I could say no more.
His questions, along with the correct answers that you find out elsewhere, make for some interesting trivia (or "lore") about the game world.Quote:
A failed experiment,
an incomplete archive of lore.
How is he a experiment though? And even if he were an experiment, how is he a failed experiment or incomplete?
That might be it....
That's not half a bad guess, really :o
