Thank you :D
Thanks Jiro, mountains are one of my favourite things to paint and to be on irl as you probably already know. I'm glad they come across as adventurous!
:praisethesun:
Thanks Proto!
I actually use the Bob Ross base oil layer for these :p works wonders! The man doesn't lie either; everything he says on the show is true. Anyone can paint he says, and with his explanations and materials I think everyone can do it too!
Thanks so much! I do have a deviantart account; http://pietzooter.deviantart.com/
I used to study graphic design so back then I used photoshop quite a bit albeit more technical and rarely with the brush function. The learning curve is pretty steep indeed but manageable nonetheless. I think one of the greatest advantages as well as disadvantages is the undo function. For one it makes it very forgiving to make mistakes, but at the same time it makes it really hard to be content with a piece. Overall, I'd say just try to make as many pieces as possible even if they're quick 'n dirty. You'll learn faster that way instead of trying to make one very detailed piece you get stuck on and stops being fun.
Here's a new piece, made a timelapse of it too:

Enjoy and thanks to everyone who voted in the Best Artist Ciddie category!
Thank you very much for the advice! I will aim hard to keep learning :3 Gonna add you to DA too... ^_^
Ohhh, love the time lapses. Thanks.
Note to self: Subscribe to Pete on YT & DA.
You're the Michiru Kaioh of EoFF. These are the kind of paintings I would expect to see in art exhibits.
Thanks everyone! Unfortunately I had to leave my oil painting gear behind in favour of some more travels, but I made a new digital piece instead.
Attachment 58632
I'm content with how the trees turned out and in case you're wondering the big red things like sea anemones on land, light enough to be swayed by the wind.
The colours in that are simply spectacular.
Pete, your paintings are like a dream. If I was to ever write a fantasy novel, I'd probably be using your paintings as muse for locations.
This painting is really awesome because I want to see what's in that rock hole! Why is it glittering? What is there?
Have you ever considered doing a series of paintings?
I have considered themed series, but for some reason I can't really stomp out paintings too often and I kind of forgot or just want to try something else. Maybe one day : )
Haven't posted in a while, but I just finished a new digital piece. It took forever.
Attachment 59658
Tell me what you think!
Haven't had internet for a while which has upped my productivity by a huge amount :D
Attachment 60595
Edit: Also of course I shall be defending the Artist department Ciddie! :D
Oh my goodness! This one definitely ranks pretty high of my favorites of yours, Pete! (I know I say this about all of your paintings.)
My first thought was that you posted a scene from some gorgeous game and joked about being productive. My second thought was that I would play the crap out of a game you did art for.
Actually, no need to defend. It's kind of a no-contest.
I like this latest one, but it's not my favorite. There's something about the contrast that feels a little less engaging than some of the others. Not really a critique, I'm just trying to keep your head from exploding, buddy. :)
New piece. Still no internet at home, which means I'm still productive. Tried a rainy scene for the first time using this tutorial. Good times!
Attachment 60810
smurfing love. I want that on my wall.
Did you intend to make it look like it's raining in that picture, Pete?
Thank you chionos! And yes Jinx, like chionos pointed out :p
Here's a fairly quick one. Fond of it nonetheless.
Attachment 61151
Ooh, this one is eerie and menacing. It reminds me of Will-o-the-wisps.
I want to play a game in that setting. I really do.
Did lots of drawing and painting lately :) I've got two more but they're still drying. More soon!
Attachment 61703
Attachment 61704
Apparently I'm fond of putting parts of trees in the bottomright corner. I only noticed that just now :shifty:
My heart just skipped a beat.
Man I smurfing love the colors of PlentyGreen (the second one).
Also, I love that the tree in the second picture is punching up through the snow in the first picture.
Beautiful!!! I love your work! *sparkly eyes* You got yourself a new fan! :D
Thanks everyone! Haven't posted in a while but made a whole bunch of new paintings in the meantime. The 3rd and 4th are experiments with black canvasses. Three of these have been sold already :D

Hot damn, that dark forest is so awesome.
Thanks ;D I might try another one of those dark ones today.
Here's 6 little new ones, all done on 8x8" canvas for a fundraiser.

Some new darker stuff! 16x20" oil on canvas. Really content with this one!
Attachment 63458
Lots of really nice pieces here Pete, good work :)
Thanks Egami! :D
So great! Any chance some dark ships might be on the horizon? ;)
This thread is brilliant, because I can actually see you improving and honing your skills. I love it. The Old Path is my very favourite. :D
I'll see what I can do Mae ;D I still have 3 canvasses to fill before leaving the country again!
Cheers Quin! Your post made me go through all the other pages haha. It's making me want to go back to water colours too! So many things to try : )
Two new ones and I'm about to start on my last blank canvas of this season before leaving Canada again. See how we go ;D

Omg, Autumn Blaze has the most beautiful colour spectrum. Just wow.
Very, very impressed Pete. Some outstanding pieces here :D
Thanks guys ;D
I don't much like the first one, but the second one is gorgeous.
I'm working on a Dark Souls fan art piece and obviously it's starring Knight Solaire, Warrior of the Sun . References on the left, actual thing on the right (work in progress). Hope you enjoy!
Attachment 63907
Amazing job on the WIP, Pete! I love your grasp on the details on Knight Solaire. Your landscapes are also just as awesome. Very nice!
New oil painting! I'm really really happy with this one. So far most of my oil works have been in very familiar Bob Ross style, but for the first time this one feels like it's sorta my own. It came out exactly how I had it in mind and that's rare too. I think focussing on one thing and make that look good could work better for me than trying to fill the entire canvas with different stuff. Anywho, it feels kinda like a breakthrough.
Hope you like it too, feedback is welcome :D
Attachment 64572
Been a while since I've made something with colours, but I finished this digital piece the other night. Hope you dig : )
Attachment 65514
Serious talent there, Mr President :D
Very awesome stuff!
Very dig.
Though personally, recently I'm finding that I much prefer traditional media, even if your digital work is just as stunning ;)
Thanks everybody, much appreciated ;D
I found this guy doing Bob Ross like things but he has a lot better knack for lighting and I basically learned I should tone down my colours more when doing oil paints to make them less cartoony bright and get more natural lighting/shading. Pretty stoked on this result, although I do admit I roughly just copied what he did in the video.
Attachment 65931
Oh wow, that looks great! I'll look into that guy cause i've been trying my own landscape stuff lately.
Ya he's good! While Bob Ross is a great entry step to make fairly quick and easy landscapes, this guy Kevin Hill usually has a little more aim to what he wants to make, and then thinks about how he's going to make that. It's like he has a bit more structure and reasoning to it, and I find that very useful! Happy painting ;D
New digital piece ;D
Attachment 66082
That sky, damn. Good work Pete!
I want you to come and paint the walls in my house. <3
Do you take commissions? :p (I'm only half joking, by the way)
Jiro and I are still keen to pay you whatever for you paint whatever (probably another of your ships). In all seriousness.
I'm serious as well; I'm seriously considering a piece for a friend's birthday now. :D
Some new works : ) Still no ship but I want to do one soon! I got a great idea for it ;D
Attachment 67151 Attachment 67152
:O
I made a new Dark Souls fan art!
Attachment 67219
Let me know what you think ;D
ooooo I like the yellow orange and green accents in that one. The border is darker and the green gives it a more calming feel to go with that darker and then BAM yellow and a little bit of orange. It really pulls the eye, that and the line work/shapes, to the yellow. Like if I cover the yellow with my hand the pictures likes nice and calming but with the extra color and lighting it gives the image more depth. It looks more like it's a fire in a fire-less world!
Good stuff!
Sorry if that's more in depth than normal, it just really resonated with me haha
This picture actually made me feel really uneasy. The uncertainty of the tower in the background covered in mist and the other grim surroundings. At first, the yellow and orange colours in the centre seem inviting, a little respite in a world of darkness. The more I look at them though, the more I seem to distrust it as a haven. It's like there is nowhere safe here. Very reminiscent of Dark Souls!
Your pictures invoke so much emotion Pete. Fantastic stuff, really great.
Pete, you're a really great artist. Don't break those wrists snow boarding!
Someday I'll be successful and buy some art from you. Dark souls art obviously.
Gorgeous art as always! I hope one day I can make art even half as beautiful as yours!
I like that it's more in depth than normal! I am really glad you like the piece and that it resonated ;D That might be the biggest compliment you can give an artist now that I think of it : )
Thank you for the kind words Bubba! Glad to hear the vibe in the piece fits the original game : ) I'll be back soon with more ;D
I'll try and be safe ;D
Any time brother! I have an idea for another Dark Souls piece involving Oswald the Pardoner and the Painted World :shifty:
Thank you so much! Practice is the only secret to getting good at anything :D
Sorry for taking so long to respond. You guys are wonderful! <3
I still had a couple of oil paintings lying around which I was never able to take decent pictures of, but yesterday I finally got around to photographing them. Hope you enjoy : )

Beautiful as always! Your skill impresses me. I love these oil paintings though!
They're absolutely gorgeous!
Your gift with landscape is to a true professional standard! Excellent!
Fabulous stuff again :D
Thank you everybody! I've had lot's of time on my hands so I made 2 new ones last week. I finally got around to trying out the idea I had for a ship. Hope you enjoy;
Attachment 67957 Attachment 67958
These are all so beautiful! Well done.
Lovely! I love the effect with the sky in the first one, what did you do to create that?
It's a very easy oil painting trick, but it does require some preparation;
First paint the entire canvas black with black acrylic and let it dry completely. Then add the following oil paint colours wildly (as in; it doesn't have to be precise at all!): Indian Yellow where you want the sun to be, Alyzarin Crimson (red) in a ring around the yellow, followed up by a ring of Pthalo blue around the red. Use lot's of paint! Important stuff: these oil colours are transparent colours, meaning that when you put them on the black canvas it still looks very dark. With a clean brush blend all that together in circles starting in the yellow, working all the way outwards.
Then grab a small brush full of white and just smack some on wildly, starting in the yellow and working outward. When the brush runs out of white, wipe it quickly with some paper towel, load it up with more white, apply again. When you think there's enough white on it blend it all with a clean dry brush for added effect. The transparent colours mix with the white and will start to show very brightly.
I love this trick, it's really easy and needs very little precision.
Bob Ross shows and explains it way better in this video! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nox3vRVZUUs
I'm sure that sounds delightfully simple for someone who has done painting for years.
Actually, I don't think I've asked you what got you into art and painting yet.
;D
I always used to doodle in my schoolbooks as a kid, but serious drawing and sketching didn't start until I was 19-20. Seeing the artworks on sites like Deviantart made me want to get good at it too. My drawings were always black and white though and eventually I got tired of it and wanted to try colours. That started off digitally in Photoshop, then watercolours, then acrylics (I took a painting mini-course in university), all with moderate success. After watching Bob Ross for breakfast about 2 months straight I just had to try oil painting and following the afro-man's tutorials made it surprisingly easy to pick up! It's just a lot of fun :p
Working on a new digital piece and it shall have ruins!
Attachment 68299
oooo I look forward to seeing the results!
Here it is ;D
Attachment 68369
I'm really excited about this one. Mainly because I've never really done any nighttime scenes, and also because I feel like I learned a whole lot about texturing stone and walls;
Attachment 68370
;D
Holy trout. That was just not what I was expecting! It looks great! I just thought it'd be some cool ruins but that's a great night time piece!
Big thanks to everyone who nominated and voted for me in the Ciddies! :D
Here's a new one;
Attachment 68668
Wow! It's so epic looking! I really like it.
Breathtaking. I love the desolate landscape interrupted by the pale green/blue floating island jutting out to get your attention. Surprisingly calming, looking at it.
Thanks guys :D more soon!
New stuff ;D Fiddled with the lighting for hours and hours. Hope it turned out good!
Attachment 70228
Is that a piano in the distance? It really gives it a creepy, mysterious vibe. I love how the light streams in through the treetops.
Excellent work!
Omg, that looks like a background ripped straight out of Icewind Dale! D:
Oh, Icewind Dale? With Fynn, a very good thing, trust me.
And I gotta be honest, I did think it was a couch at first glance, until I saw the white keys and then cottoned on to the fact that it was a piano.
Yeah, I thought it was a couch at first too! Then I thought "why would there be a couch there?" I looked closer and realised it's clearly a piano. Then I thought "why would there be a piano there?". Then I thought "I don't even know where 'there' is so why not?"
Once again, I find myself deep in thought when looking at your paintings, Pete. Excellent work!
Thanks for the kind words guys, glad it's evoking thoughts one way or another :p
I've been feeling very productive lately, here's another piece!
Attachment 70422
It's very haunting, again! Is that like a stone lantern in the centre image? I like it, gives it a sense of opposition against the imposing gloom.
Thanks! It's a lantern indeed ;D despite the gloom I tried to make it lively nonetheless with all kinds of plants and shrooms growing on it. Here's a zoomed in bit; Attachment 70510
I've revised the piano piece to be much lighter, and I added lots more details in the leaves, lay of the land and some other stuff. Way more satisfied with this version compared to the old one : )
Attachment 70676
I much prefer the lighter tone! Also, very glad you left the sofa in ;)
The lighting and colour on the lantern picture are fantastic :D
I'm in Indonesia and feeling tropical! Made this in between surf sessions : )
Attachment 70747
i just wanted to tell you you're amazing
New piece in time for the ciddies ;D It's a castle.
Attachment 71088
New one! Might not be my most detailed piece but I kinda just got over it working on it ;p
Attachment 71540
Ooooh, Pete! I always come back here to your thread for inspiration. Your work is just so rich! I love it! <3
Thanks bro :)
Here's a new piece and it's probably my new favourite. I've put a lot of thought into it and it's based of a bit of lyrics of a song I wrote about a year ago. It goes "I left my instruments on these barren rocks, returned guitars to be one with woods and bark". The guitar in the piece is my guitar that's resting in a case back at home. I've used it playing in rock bands for about 10 years. That was before started living the travellers' life about 4 years ago and that's also when the band split up. So in a way my guitar is now retired, although one day I will start a band again. Can't wait for the day :)
Attachment 71615
if Zelda had guitars instead of swords...
The Master Gibson!
I love this :D
Holy smurf man, I love that. smurfing beautiful.
