Pokémon X&Y post-launch discussion thread - AKA Jinx is Upset

I'm sure this is all covered somewhere else in the thread but I am far too lazy to actually go looking. The game just arrived last night and my 3DS should get here tonight. Could someone (probably Skyblade) either link to or provide a good explanation of the differences in X/Y from previous games and other good tips/tricks/hints that would help in the game? Specifically, I don't quite understand what O-Powers are or how Pokemon-Amie works. Also, how do the three Pokedex's work or how are they unlocked? Is the game super non-linear where you can get a bunch of Pokemon without worry about badge progression as well?

Also, how does the friend safari thing work? Is it 3 pokemon added per friend code inputted or is it more than that?

Wow. Ok, this is going to be long, because they've changed a lot.

First off, the new features. There are three primary ones to talk about. They are Pokémon Amie, Super Training, and the Player Search System. Each one takes up your lower screen unless you bring up your menu, and you can use the touchpad or L and R to cycle between them. All three of these features unlock immediately after you get your starter, though some have other minor restrictions, which I will mention as we get to them.

Pokémon Amie Guide

Pokémon Amie is a new way to increase Affection with your Pokémon. Each Pokémon has three Pokémon Amie stats. These are Affection, Fullness, and Enjoyment. Affection is the beneficial one that you want to raise. Fullness and Enjoyment are just restrictions on how much you can raise Affection.

When you open Pokémon Amie, you'll be able to interact with your Pokémon. Petting it with the stylus or calling its name will give you hearts, which increase its Affection. However, doing so consumes Enjoyment, and once Enjoyment is drained, you can't gain any more Affection hearts this way.

You can also feed your Pokémon Poképuffs to further increase Affection. However, this also increases Fullness. Once full, a Pokémon refuses to eat any more. How much a Pokémon can eat varies based on how empty its Fullness is (at fully empty, it can eat six), but you'll notice that the last one is eaten slower than the others, to give you warning so you don't waste any Poképuffs.

In order to reset Fullness and Enjoyment, and earn more Poképuffs, you need to play the mini-games. There are three, and they have variable difficulty levels. The better you do, and the higher difficulty you play on, the better the rewards. You'll get more, and better, Poképuffs for doing better on the games.

Each time you play a minigame, it resets part of the meters. Any three games played through (even Endless mode where you lose immediately on purpose) will reset both a Pokémon's Enjoyment and Fullness, allowing you to feed it and pet it to get more affection.

As you get basic Affection hearts, you'll eventually raise the Affection level. When your level goes up, the Pokémon will cheer and dozens of hearts will rush out at once. You really can't miss it.

Raising Affection seems to be permanent (I know it is permanent once you max it), and gives various bonuses. Increase Experience, increased Evasion, increased Critical Chance. You Pokémon can heal itself from status effects (so you don't worry about them) or even survive normally deadly hits with 1 HP left, like a Focus Band.


Minigames (to play you need at least three Pokémon):
Each has four difficulty modes: Easy, Normal, Hard, and Unlimited (which goes on until you fail)
-The first is Berry Picker. You drag berries from a tree to your Pokémon. There is one of each berry type, and each Pokémon requests a certain berry. More berries are added and the speed picks up as the difficulty increases.
-The second is Head It. Yarn falls from the top of the screen, and you tap your Pokémon to bounce it back up. Yarn falls faster and patterns are a little less consistent as difficulty increases.
-The third is Tile Puzzle. A moving picture of your Pokémon is broken into tiles. Each tile is then switched with another tile on the screen. Each tile is only moved once, so if you move a tile back correctly, you should always actually fix two tiles. Each picture shifts between scenes as you work on it. The pictures are split into more tiles as difficulty progresses.


Personal advice: Raise up the "Head it" minigame. It's easy to bounce the yarn up, and it gives great rewards for easy effort. Once you reach unlimited, play it and earn about 300 to 400 points, and you should get six excellent Poképuffs. If you five star it (around 900 points) you'll get even better ones, but it's not worth the extra time. If you wind up with lots of extra Poképuffs, you can just end the game in about fifteen seconds by not bouncing yarn at all, so you can reset the work up stats really quickly.

Even better: Play unlimited and chain together 15. Your score should reach around 65+, so you'll one star the level and earn 2 of the second-best Poképuffs in the game.

Pokémon Super Training Guide: This is REALLY long, and I'm sorry about that.

Pokémon Super Training is a great new way to maximize the Effort Values of your Pokémon.

As per previous games, a single Pokémon can have 510 Effort Values total. Every 4 Effort Values (EVs) are worth one point in a stat to a level 100 Pokémon. However, unlike other Pokémon games, you can now only put 252 EVs in a single stat, instead of the 255 of older games, preventing you from wasting 3 EVs which won't yield a stat boost.

Super Training starts with two tutorial level which teach you the basics. Essentially, the game is a shooter. The Circle Pad controls your Pokémon's movement, and the stylus controls your aim and fires shots.

You face a series of Pokémon balloons. Each has targets which appear on them as you play. Hit the targets and your score goes up. Meet the score that is the goal for the level, and you complete the level. However, many Pokémon balloons move, and some have barriers, other balloons blocking for them, or the ability to fight back.

Barriers can be broken either through doing enough damage, or by hitting their yellow weak spot directly. Guardian balloons can be killed by damage, but will regenerate over time, so it is better to try to fire around them. Balloons will fight back by firing giant soccer balls at you. Evade them by moving, or press L to activate your Shield. Just know that, like Protect, your Shield can't be used repeatedly, so get used to dodging.

Adding EVs to your Pokémon increases how they perform in Super Training, in addition to the stat boosts. Increasing Attack or Special Attack increases the points you score with each hit. Increasing Defense or Special Defense decreases the damage you take from soccer balls and increases the speed at which you charge shots up. Increasing HP increases the size of your ball's hit zone, allowing you to hit targets more easily. And increasing Speed increases how fast you can move to avoid hits, and possibly how fast your shot travels.

When you complete a level, you earn Effort Value points. The first two tutorial levels (which you can't escape) yield 4 EVs in Defense apiece, for a total of 8 Defense EVs. There is also a "Target Time" for each level that gives your Pokémon a little medal if they can beat it within the time, and the game will keep track of your fastest times, and which Pokémon earned them.

After you complete those levels, you unlock the first tier of Super Training. You can choose from any of the six stats: Special Attack, HP, Attack, Special Defense, Speed, and Defense. Completing one of these levels will reward you with 4 EVs in the corresponding stat. Complete all the levels, and you unlock the second tier. IMPORTANT NOTE: You do not have to complete them all with a single Pokémon, you just have to clear each level once with any Pokémon to unlock tier two.

Tier two has the same breakdown, but each level now yields 8 EVs per level, and each level is generally harder. Complete every tier two level (again, you do not need to do it with a single Pokémon), and you unlock tier three. In Tier 3, you face harder levels, and each is worth 12 EVs, making it the fastest way to increase EVs in Super Training.

After any individual Pokémon has acquired 510 EVs, that particular Pokémon is allowed to enter Tier 4 (you may have to unlock Tiers 2 and 3 if you got your EVs through battle instead of Super Training, I'm not sure). In Tier 4, you no longer get EVs. Instead, you get items. Some of these items are rare (almost every course seems to be tied to an Evolution Stone, for example), and what item they give you depends on how fast you clear them, with some luck thrown in. Also, these levels are far harder than the old ones, and, unlike Tiers 1 through 3, you cannot take on any one you wish, you have to unlock them one at a time.

Completing all 6 Tier 4 missions with one Pokémon will allow that Pokémon to take on Tier 5, the final tier. You'll get more items as rewards, but the rules are essentially the same as Tier 4.


Each time you complete a level, no matter which tier it is in, you will also earn a Punching Bag. These Punching Bags are accessible from the main Super Training Screen (again, the game will give you a tutorial on them). Which one you get depends on which mission you completed, and how fast you did it. Completing an Attack mission, for example, will yield an Attack bag almost always (occasionally you'll get a Double Up bag or something else different, but never a different stat, I'll get to those in a minute). Breaking these bags reward you with extra EVs for that stat.

Small Bags, easily accessible from the first Tier, are worth 1 EV, and must be punched by a Pokémon 11 times to break. And, as with all bags, the final blow must come from you hitting the screen, the Pokémon won't do it automatically. Medium Bags are worth 4 EVs, and must be hit 26 times. Large Bags are worth 12 EVs, and must be hit 51 times.

If you fail a mission, you still get a punching bag. However, you get different punching bags, intended to help you complete the missions. These include the Strength Bag, which earns you more points per hit, the Toughen Up bag, which reduces the damage you take from soccer balls, the Big Shot bag, which increases your shot size to make hitting easier, and the Swiftness bag, which makes your Pokémon move faster. Each bag breaks in 11 hits, and lasts for only one mission.

There are also a few extra bags which do special things. The Double Up bag can be randomly won as an award, or through the second method (give me a second, I'll get to it), and doubles the EVs you earn on your next mission. The other two bags, the Soothing bag and the Reset bag, can only be acquired through being "found" by a Pokémon training itself. Essentially, any time your Pokémon hits the grey punching bag (about once a minute if left automatically) while no other punching bag is put up, there's a chance they'll get a bag. These can be any bag in the game, but are your only chance of getting Reset and Soothing bags. Soothing bags increase your friendship, so are great for Pokémon like Golbat or an Eevee you want to evolve to Espeon/Umbreon. Reset bags reset all your EVs so you can train from scratch. All non-stat bags take 11 hits to break, again with the final hit coming from you.

Pokémon will occasionally fall asleep, which keeps them from going on missions or hitting punching bags. Tapping them will wake them up. It will also put a smile on their face, which makes the next bag they punch at break twice as quickly.


How to punch bags: Any time you tap the touchscreen, your Pokémon will punch a bag. They will also punch on their own about once a minute, and they'll do this even in the middle of a punching session you're controlling.


Final note: Not every Pokémon acts the same way in the Super Training missions. On the main Super Training page, in the upper right corner, is a logo. For most Pokémon I've found (including your starters) it will be a soccer ball. But for some (first I found was Oddish) it will be a line of little soccer balls. This indicates how they fight in the missions. A single ball Pokémon is good for heavy, timed shots, while Oddish will fire rapidly but weakly as long as you hold down the stylus.

Player Search System and O-Powers

This is the new Wifi-Room. You no longer have to go to a Pokécenter to trade, browse the GTS, or anything like that. You can do it all from the PSS screen at any time.

The PSS screen is split into three sections. The first is "Friends", which lists all the people who are Friends with you. The Friends from your 3DS's Friends List will only be added if they go online while playing a Pokémon X/Y game at the same time you are online with your Pokémon X/Y game.

The second section is "Acqaintances", which is used for anyone you've had direct interactions with (battle or trade) but have not Friended. And the third section is "Passerby", which is everyone within your 3DS's wireless range or, if you are on the internet, every other person connected to the internet with a Pokémon game.

To interact with a trainer, tap on them. It will pull up a screen with their name, and available options. These include Trading, Battling, using Game-Chat (if they allow it), viewing their Trainer Video, or using O-Powers on them. Most of these are fairly self-explanatory, but I'll detail Trainer Videos and O-Powers below.

Trainer Videos can be set up in Lumiose City, and are a ten second video of your trainer in various poses and with effects, backgrounds, and movements. Edit one when you get to Lumiose City, and you'll figure it out from there.


O-Powers are buffs. You start out with Pokémon Healing, which heals the first Pokémon in the party, or the Pokémon currently in battle, for a minor amount. You also start with Pokémon Capture Power, which increases the chance for a Pokéball to capture a Pokémon. You get extra ones as you play, and they include powers like a stat buff at the start of the next combat, increased money from trainers, increased experience from battles, reduced cost of items at shops, and things like that.

Every O-Power has a cost of "Energy". Energy regenerates with time, and isn't used for anything but O-Powers, so don't be stingy with it. Each Power has a cost to you, and a cost to use on someone else. Using it on yourself is always more expensive than using it on someone else, to help promote social interaction. For example, Sp. Attack Power 1 is 1 Energy if you use it on someone else, but 3 Energy if you use it on yourself.

There are also different levels of each power. The more you use a power, the higher level it will become, until it reaches level 3, which is the highest. Each higher level works better, but also costs more energy.

Some powers give one time buffs, like healing or stat increases. Others give duration buffs, like money or experience. A duration buff will typically provide its benefit for three minutes, no matter what power level it is at. Increased levels instead give strong effects for that duration.


Now, on to the last parts of the PSS. In the upper right of the main screen are two blue icons. The one on the far right is the Internet icon. Press it to hook into the internet. To the left of that is the Functions Icon. This lets you do a lot of general things that aren't directly interacting with another trainer. I'll run down the list now.

Battle: Set up a Pokémon battle.

Trade: Set up a Pokémon trade.

Battle Spot: Random battles or Ranked Competition, I believe (haven't used it yet, I don't like playing competitively).

Wonder Trade: Trade any Pokémon for a random Pokémon from someone else. You can get some rares, and it's a great way to pick up Pokémon from other countries easily, but don't put up anything you don't want to lose.

Shout Out: Send out a message to other trainers who see you using PSS.

Holo Caster: No clue, really. Ability to pick up announcement data and some other stuff on Street Pass. Haven't used it.

The GTS: This is a place you can put a Pokémon and request a Pokémon for trade. You can search for a Pokémon other people have put up, either by selecting one from your Pokédex, or typing in its name. It's a decent way to hunt for Pokémon you don't have, though there are a lot of ridiculous trades up there, such as people wanting a legendary for a Skitty.

Game Sync: Hook up to the Pokémon Game Link to let Nintendo track your progress and reward PokéMiles for it. For more details, try it out or check the website, this one isn't too important right now (not all functionality is working for it yet).

O-Power: If you want to use an O-Power on yourself, this is the place to do it.

Favorites List: Haven't used, not sure how to. Something similar to the friend's list, apparently, but I don't know the details.

Profile: Information on you to adjust and make viewable.

PSS Settings: Exactly what it sounds like.

Friend Safari Guide

Upon completing the game and beating the Elite 4 (massive spoilers), you unlock the Safari Zone. Your Safari Zone has a type, which relates to the Pokémon which can be found within it. Mine, for example, is Normal. Unfortunately, your Safari Zone only has three Pokémon in it. You are stuck with those three Pokémon and can never change them, as far as we know.

However, anyone who is listed as a "Friend" in your PSS has their own Safari Zone, and you can visit that Safari Zone as well.

Thus, for each friend on the PSS, you get another Safari Zone and three more Pokémon to catch in it. Though you can of course get duplicates if you have bad luck. However, you should note that if one of your friends has not beaten the Elite Four (and done a Game Sync or been online since, so Nintendo can know about it), you will only be able to see two of their Pokémon, and the third will unlock once they have completed the game.

The benefits of the Friend Safari are thus:

You can get Pokémon you can't otherwise get in-game.
Pokémon in the Friend Safari have an increased chance of having their Hidden Ability.
Pokémon in the Friend Safari have an increased chance of being Shiny.
Pokémon in the Friend Safari always have at least two IVs that are 31, the maximum possible value.

Kalos Pokédex Explanation - Very Short

The Kalos Pokédex is broken into three regions. Central, Coastal, and Mountain. You start with just the Central Pokédex, and the others are added on as you enter their respective territories. You first get the Coastal Pokédex after you leave Connecting Cave.

Due to the extremely high number of Pokémon, the sections were added for ease of sorting/tracking. There are no other effects on gameplay that I know of.

Pokémon-Amie Update: The best way to get good Poképuffs is to play Unlimited mode in Head It. Chain together 15 hits, then let them all fall. You'll get two of the second best Poképuffs possible (the best ones require 5-Starring Unlimited Mode, which takes way too long, and only gives you a minor boost over these). Great way to get them extremely quickly.

I'm now 10 hours in and 4 badges down. I like to play the storyline through pretty quickly! I haven't really been doing much Pokemon Amie so I might focus on that today.

You won't find wild Dittos until just before the 8th Gym. I got lucky and found one on the GTS, which was awesome.

Jinx helped me with my O-Powers, but I've always been too embarrassed to tell her. :blush:

Whee~ Elite 4 and Champion demolished. now I start the hunt for Mega-Stones, Zygarde, Zapdos and Mewtwo. Also finishing off the Kalos Dex, and then I twiddle my thumbs until the Bank goes live so I can work on the National Dex.


So, I just got a Pokerus Yveltal from a Wonder Trade.

Whoo. Just beat the Elite Four today and looking at the Friend Safari and it seems I need to get more friend codes from people. So if you want to add me, here is my code: 0516-7478-2513. I'll be adding those I don't already have from this thread as well. Kinda excited about how it works now.

I've now caught five forms of Flabebe. The obvious ones are, of course, Red, Yellow, and Blue, the same as the flower colors you can find them in. But I've also found Orange rarely in the yellow flowers. And today, while hunting in the red flowers for another Ralts, I discovered a White Flabebe, which is easily the rarest of the lot, at least in my game.

As predicted, I didn't have tons of time to play this weekend. However, I did get past the 6th gym!

I just fought my first Team Flare member, inside Glittering Cave. His Houndour used Roar to phase away my level 21 Bagon... And call out my level 59 Greninja. In hindsight, it was probably not his smartest move.




In other news, my party has switched up, largely to phase out my traded Pokémon until I can get more badges, and to start working up more evolutions and prepare for some Mega-Evolutions.

Currently I'm running through Glittering Cave with:

Kirlia, Level 25
Riolu, Level 20
Bagon, Level 21
Bibarel, Level 22

The last two are my current HM/Field Move Pokémon. Bibarel for Cut and Rock Smash, and Gloom for Sweet Scent.

I've also prepped a lovely Adamant Super Luck Absol who is level 29, too high to take with me, and a level 29 Meowstic, who is awesome, but unfortunately my party is only so big, and she's again too high a level when I have others to train. Only my starter and my HM Pokémon are guaranteed positions.

Charizard, Blaziken, and Delphox are all 40, and I think Chesnaught is 37. The levels are so high because of the Battle Manse. I keep going back and going back. I'm not even doing it for the money (though the money does rock) or the experience (some trainers carry two level 35 Audinos, which give tons and tons of Exp). I just want to increase my nobility rank to the max (whatever that max is). I don't think I've reached it yet, I haven't been crowned King. I did manage to see Gym Leader Viola in the Manse, though she had a new title as a member of the nobility.


Edit: Does Serena/Calem ever use the Pokémon from the other fossil in her team?

Calem has never used his fossil pokemon on me.

Damn, I'm flying through the story way too quick here. Just caught my Xerneas this morning, so think I'm going to slow right down and do some more Pokemon Amie and other little side things for a while before getting my last Gym badges.

Also you guys are super fast. Huxley and I have been playing this game for hours a day since the day it came out and we've both only made it to the sixth gym.

I am currently only a Marquis. I actually heard that it's possible to reach Grand Duke, above Duke. But, since Duke is apparently the rank at which the Elite Four start visiting (while Marquis is the rank at which the Gym Leaders start visiting), I suppose it is quite possible that I need to beat the Elite Four before I can become a Duke.

You get style points by doing random stuff, like taking taxis, or buying expensive items, eating at the restaurants, going through the Lumiose Museum and listening to the Audio Guide. But yea, almost all of that won't happen until after the 5th gym.

After you get the National Dex older fossils can spawn in the same stones that have the Old Amber, which ones spawn is determined by your version.

I don't care about the clothes shops at all; in fact I wish I'd rolled a male character just so I could at least have a suit.

Anyway I'm enjoying raising my new Charmeleon because I'm not super impressed with either the event torchic/combusken or the fox (now a delphox) that I got on wonder trade. Good ol' charmander, though... :D

I'm enjoying how easily available the starters have become. Two Friend Safari Zones have starters for me (Wartortle and Charmeleon). So breeding starters as Wonder Trade fodder should be quite fun and easy.

I've been mulling over the idea to do a special run through of the game with one type only and a few restrictions. I have a preference for the Dragon types, which have been reduced in status thanks to Fairy. The rules are the hardest part to think of though... So far I've thought of only using ones you can catch and must have Dragon as the actual type (No Gyrados). Also, no Mega Evolutions at all, besides the story forced one. Maybe adding in a few other rules could help make this more interesting or difficult. Problem is that I'd have to trade just to get a dragon to start with.

Any ideas for rules, and just don't say Nuzlocke rules. Some of those will be good though.

I've heard of that too. And I think you're allowed to actually level them up but you must get rid of them through WT after each gym. Which is reasonable since you might only get very low level Pokemon and not even be able to take on a wild one let alone a gym.

Thanks. I wasn't actually worried how I am doing compared to other players. If anything, I was complimenting peoples dedication to getting the most of of Pokemon! Also, you can either take the SD card out of your 3DS (obviously when it is off to be safe) and plug it in to your computer if you have a slot for it and find the picture folder to there. Or you can just upload your pics to Facebook. The system basically tells you how to do that with no trouble.

You guys are running at about the same pace I did before I beat it. The rest of this game is dedicated to getting all teh pokemans.

Very true, but I really want the different areas you people can give me in the Friend Zone. So, I added all those who have put of their codes prior. And thanks to having some, I can catch some pretty neat pokemon. Wartortles and Charmeleons there can have their Hidden Abilities, which are nice. Also, Spheals. Spheals are adorable. Seriously. o.o

So I tried this, and you can indeed deposit a pokemon and request one of those 3, but you can also deposit a Pokemon and request an Aaaaaa or a Tsiosjidjs. However it seems that if someone else requests one of those (Valcanion for example) that request will show up in the GTS, and will be excluded if you select "Don't Include Special".

Since we had some new players, I wanted to highlight my little guide to new features again. I did make a lot of effort to type it out and give the best advice and information I could, so I hope you all are finding some use for it. :D

Pokémon Amie Guide

Pokémon Amie is a new way to increase Affection with your Pokémon. Each Pokémon has three Pokémon Amie stats. These are Affection, Fullness, and Enjoyment. Affection is the beneficial one that you want to raise. Fullness and Enjoyment are just restrictions on how much you can raise Affection.

When you open Pokémon Amie, you'll be able to interact with your Pokémon. Petting it with the stylus or calling its name will give you hearts, which increase its Affection. However, doing so consumes Enjoyment, and once Enjoyment is drained, you can't gain any more Affection hearts this way.

You can also feed your Pokémon Poképuffs to further increase Affection. However, this also increases Fullness. Once full, a Pokémon refuses to eat any more. A Pokémon whose Fullness is completely empty can eat 6 Poképuffs, and you'll notice that the last two are eaten slower than the others, to give you warning so you don't waste any Poképuffs.

In order to reset Fullness and Enjoyment, and earn more Poképuffs, you need to play the mini-games. There are three, and they have variable difficulty levels. The better you do, and the higher difficulty you play on, the better the rewards. You'll get more, and better Poképuffs for doing better on the games.

Each time you play a minigame, it resets part of the meters. Any three games played through (even Endless mode where you lose immediately on purpose) will reset both a Pokémon's Enjoyment and Fullness, allowing you to feed it and pet it to get more affection.

As you get basic Affection hearts, you'll eventually raise the Affection level. When your level goes up, the Pokémon will cheer and dozens of hearts will rush out at once. You really can't miss it.

Raising Affection seems to be permanent (I know it is permanent once you max it), and gives various bonuses. Increase Experience, increased Evasion, increased Critical Chance. You Pokémon can heal itself from status effects (so you don't worry about them) or even survive normally deadly hits with 1 HP left, like a Focus Band.


Minigames (to play you need at least three Pokémon):
Each has four difficulty modes: Easy, Normal, Hard, and Unlimited (which goes on until you fail)
-The first is Berry Picker. You drag berries from a tree to your Pokémon. There is one of each berry type, and each Pokémon requests a certain berry. More berries are added and the speed picks up as the difficulty increases.
-The second is Head It. Yarn falls from the top of the screen, and you tap your Pokémon to bounce it back up. Yarn falls faster and patterns are a little less consistent as difficulty increases.
-The third is Tile Puzzle. A moving picture of your Pokémon is broken into tiles. Each tile is then switched with another tile on the screen. Each tile is only moved once, so if you move a tile back correctly, you should always actually fix two tiles. Each picture shifts between scenes as you work on it. The pictures are split into more tiles as difficulty progresses.


Personal advice: Raise up the "Head it" minigame. It's easy to bounce the yarn up, and it gives great rewards for easy effort. Once you reach unlimited, play it and earn about 300 to 400 points, and you should get six excellent Poképuffs. If you five star it (around 900 points) you'll get even better ones, but it's not worth the extra time.

The Best Way To Get Good Poképuffs:
Play Unlimited Head it, and chain 15 bounces together. This should net you at least 60 to 65 points (45 from bouncing, plus 15 for the chain), which is enough to one-star Unlimited Mode. This will reward you with two of the second best Poképuffs in the game (again, to get the best, you need to 5-star Unlimited, which takes at least ten times as long, and risks making mistakes). Three games with two Poképuffs rewarded each will get you 6 Poképuffs, which is exactly how much a Pokémon with an empty stomach can eat, so this method is not only a fast way to get good Poképuffs, it is also perfectly sustainable for keeping your Pokémon fed as optimally as possible.

Pokémon Super Training Guide: This is REALLY long, and I'm sorry about that.

Pokémon Super Training is a great new way to maximize the Effort Values of your Pokémon.

As per previous games, a single Pokémon can have 510 Effort Values total. Each Effort Value (EV) is worth one point in a stat to a level 100 Pokémon. However, unlike other Pokémon games, you can now only put 252 EVs in a single stat, instead of the 255 of older games, preventing you from wasting 3 EVs which won't yield a stat boost.

Super Training starts with two tutorial level which teach you the basics. Essentially, the game is a shooter. The Circle Pad controls your Pokémon's movement, and the stylus controls your aim and fires shots.

You face a series of Pokémon balloons. Each has targets which appear on them as you play. Hit the targets and your score goes up. Meet the score that is the goal for the level, and you complete the level. However, many Pokémon balloons move, and some have barriers, other balloons blocking for them, or the ability to fight back.

Barriers can be broken either through doing enough damage, or by hitting their yellow weak spot directly. Guardian balloons can be killed by damage, but will regenerate over time, so it is better to try to fire around them. Balloons will fight back by firing giant soccer balls at you. Evade them by moving, or press L to activate your Shield. Just know that, like Protect, your Shield can't be used repeatedly, so get used to dodging.

Adding EVs to your Pokémon increases how they perform in Super Training, in addition to the stat boosts. Increasing Attack or Special Attack increases the points you score with each hit. Increasing Defense or Special Defense decreases the damage you take from soccer balls and increases the speed at which you charge shots up. Increasing HP increases the size of your ball's hit zone, allowing you to hit targets more easily. And increasing Speed increases how fast you can move to avoid hits, and possibly how fast your shot travels.

When you complete a level, you earn Effort Value points. The first two tutorial levels (which you can't escape) yield 4 EVs in Defense apiece, for a total of 8 Defense EVs. There is also a "Target Time" for each level that gives your Pokémon a little medal if they can beat it within the time, and the game will keep track of your fastest times, and which Pokémon earned them.

After you complete those levels, you unlock the first tier of Super Training. You can choose from any of the six stats: Special Attack, HP, Attack, Special Defense, Speed, and Defense. Completing one of these levels will reward you with 4 EVs in the corresponding stat. Complete all the levels, and you unlock the second tier. IMPORTANT NOTE: You do not have to complete them all with a single Pokémon, you just have to clear each level once with any Pokémon to unlock tier two.

Tier two has the same breakdown, but each level now yields 8 EVs per level, and each level is generally harder. Complete every tier two level (again, you do not need to do it with a single Pokémon), and you unlock tier three. In Tier 3, you face harder levels, and each is worth 12 EVs, making it the fastest way to increase EVs in Super Training.

After any individual Pokémon has acquired 510 EVs, that particular Pokémon is allowed to enter Tier 4 (you may have to unlock Tiers 2 and 3 if you got your EVs through battle instead of Super Training, I'm not sure). In Tier 4, you no longer get EVs. Instead, you get items. Some of these items are rare (almost every course seems to be tied to an Evolution Stone, for example), and what item they give you depends on how fast you clear them, with some luck thrown in. Also, these levels are far harder than the old ones, and, unlike Tiers 1 through 3, you cannot take on any one you wish, you have to unlock them one at a time.

Completing all 6 Tier 4 missions with one Pokémon will allow that Pokémon to take on Tier 5, the final tier. You'll get more items as rewards, but the rules are essentially the same as Tier 4.


Each time you complete a level, no matter which tier it is in, you will also earn a Punching Bag. These Punching Bags are accessible from the main Super Training Screen (again, the game will give you a tutorial on them). Which one you get depends on which mission you completed, and how fast you did it. Completing an Attack mission, for example, will yield an Attack bag almost always (occasionally you'll get a Double Up bag or something else different, but never a different stat, I'll get to those in a minute). Breaking these bags reward you with extra EVs for that stat.

Small Bags, easily accessible from the first Tier, are worth 1 EV, and must be punched by a Pokémon 11 times to break. And, as with all bags, the final blow must come from you hitting the screen, the Pokémon won't do it automatically. Medium Bags are worth 4 EVs, and must be hit 26 times. Large Bags are worth 12 EVs, and must be hit 51 times.

If you fail a mission, you still get a punching bag. However, you get different punching bags, intended to help you complete the missions. These include the Strength Bag, which earns you more points per hit, the Toughen Up bag, which reduces the damage you take from soccer balls, the Big Shot bag, which increases your shot size to make hitting easier, and the Swiftness bag, which makes your Pokémon move faster. Each bag breaks in 11 hits, and lasts for only one mission.

There are also a few extra bags which do special things. The Double Up bag can be randomly won as an award, or through the second method (give me a second, I'll get to it), and doubles the EVs you earn on your next mission. The other two bags, the Soothing bag and the Reset bag, can only be acquired through being "found" by a Pokémon training itself. Essentially, any time your Pokémon hits the grey punching bag (about once a minute if left automatically) while no other punching bag is put up, there's a chance they'll get a bag. These can be any bag in the game, but are your only chance of getting Reset and Soothing bags. Soothing bags increase your friendship, so are great for Pokémon like Golbat or an Eevee you want to evolve to Espeon/Umbreon. Reset bags reset all your EVs so you can train from scratch. All non-stat bags take 11 hits to break, again with the final hit coming from you.

Pokémon will occasionally fall asleep, which keeps them from going on missions or hitting punching bags. Tapping them will wake them up. It will also put a smile on their face, which makes the next bag they punch at break twice as quickly.


How to punch bags: Any time you tap the touchscreen, your Pokémon will punch a bag. They will also punch on their own about once a minute, and they'll do this even in the middle of a punching session you're controlling.


Final note: Not every Pokémon acts the same way in the Super Training missions. On the main Super Training page, in the upper right corner, is a logo. For most Pokémon I've found (including your starters) it will be a soccer ball. But for some (first I found was Oddish) it will be a line of little soccer balls. This indicates how they fight in the missions. A single ball Pokémon is good for heavy, timed shots, while Oddish will fire rapidly but weakly as long as you hold down the stylus.

Player Search System and O-Powers

This is the new Wifi-Room. You no longer have to go to a Pokécenter to trade, browse the GTS, or anything like that. You can do it all from the PSS screen at any time.

The PSS screen is split into three sections. The first is "Friends", which lists all the people who are Friends with you. The Friends from your 3DS's Friends List will only be added if they go online while playing a Pokémon X/Y game at the same time you are online with your Pokémon X/Y game.

The second section is "Acqaintances", which is used for anyone you've had direct interactions with (battle or trade) but have not Friended. And the third section is "Passerby", which is everyone within your 3DS's wireless range or, if you are on the internet, every other person connected to the internet with a Pokémon game.

To interact with a trainer, tap on them. It will pull up a screen with their name, and available options. These include Trading, Battling, using Game-Chat (if they allow it), viewing their Trainer Video, or using O-Powers on them. Most of these are fairly self-explanatory, but I'll detail Trainer Videos and O-Powers below.

Trainer Videos can be set up in Lumiose City, and are a ten second video of your trainer in various poses and with effects, backgrounds, and movements. Edit one when you get to Lumiose City, and you'll figure it out from there.


O-Powers are buffs. You start out with Pokémon Healing, which heals the first Pokémon in the party, or the Pokémon currently in battle, for a minor amount. You also start with Pokémon Capture Power, which increases the chance for a Pokéball to capture a Pokémon. You get extra ones as you play, and they include powers like a stat buff at the start of the next combat, increased money from trainers, increased experience from battles, reduced cost of items at shops, and things like that.

Every O-Power has a cost of "Energy". Energy regenerates with time, and isn't used for anything but O-Powers, so don't be stingy with it. Each Power has a cost to you, and a cost to use on someone else. Using it on yourself is always more expensive than using it on someone else, to help promote social interaction. For example, Sp. Attack Power 1 is 1 Energy if you use it on someone else, but 3 Energy if you use it on yourself.

There are also different levels of each power. The more you use a power, the higher level it will become, until it reaches level 3, which is the highest. Each higher level works better, but also costs more energy.

Some powers give one time buffs, like healing or stat increases. Others give duration buffs, like money or experience. A duration buff will typically provide its benefit for three minutes, no matter what power level it is at. Increased levels instead give strong effects for that duration.


Now, on to the last parts of the PSS. In the upper right of the main screen are two blue icons. The one on the far right is the Internet icon. Press it to hook into the internet. To the left of that is the Functions Icon. This lets you do a lot of general things that aren't directly interacting with another trainer. I'll run down the list now.

Battle: Set up a Pokémon battle.

Trade: Set up a Pokémon trade.

Battle Spot: Random battles or Ranked Competition, I believe (haven't used it yet, I don't like playing competitively).

Wonder Trade: Trade any Pokémon for a random Pokémon from someone else. You can get some rares, and it's a great way to pick up Pokémon from other countries easily, but don't put up anything you don't want to lose.

Shout Out: Send out a message to other trainers who see you using PSS.

Holo Caster: No clue, really. Ability to pick up announcement data and some other stuff on Street Pass. Haven't used it.

The GTS: This is a place you can put a Pokémon and request a Pokémon for trade. You can search for a Pokémon other people have put up, either by selecting one from your Pokédex, or typing in its name. It's a decent way to hunt for Pokémon you don't have, though there are a lot of ridiculous trades up there, such as people wanting a legendary for a Skitty.

Game Sync: Hook up to the Pokémon Game Link to let Nintendo track your progress and reward PokéMiles for it. For more details, try it out or check the website, this one isn't too important right now (not all functionality is working for it yet).

O-Power: If you want to use an O-Power on yourself, this is the place to do it.

Favorites List: Haven't used, not sure how to. Something similar to the friend's list, apparently, but I don't know the details.

Profile: Information on you to adjust and make viewable.

PSS Settings: Exactly what it sounds like.

Friend Safari Guide

Upon completing the game and beating the Elite 4 (massive spoilers), you unlock the Safari Zone. Your Safari Zone has a type, which relates to the Pokémon which can be found within it. Mine, for example, is Normal. Unfortunately, your Safari Zone only has three Pokémon in it. You are stuck with those three Pokémon and can never change them, as far as we know.

However, anyone who is listed as a "Friend" in your PSS has their own Safari Zone, and you can visit that Safari Zone as well.

Thus, for each friend on the PSS, you get another Safari Zone and three more Pokémon to catch in it. Though you can of course get duplicates if you have bad luck. However, you should note that if one of your friends has not beaten the Elite Four (and done a Game Sync or been online since, so Nintendo can know about it), you will only be able to see two of their Pokémon, and the third will unlock once they have completed the game.

The benefits of the Friend Safari are thus:

You can get Pokémon you can't otherwise get in-game.
Pokémon in the Friend Safari have an increased chance of having their Hidden Ability.
Pokémon in the Friend Safari have an increased chance of being Shiny.
Pokémon in the Friend Safari always have at least two IVs that are 31, the maximum possible value.

Kalos Pokédex Explanation - Very Short

The Kalos Pokédex is broken into three regions. Central, Coastal, and Mountain. You start with just the Central Pokédex, and the others are added on as you enter their respective territories. You first get the Coastal Pokédex after you leave Connecting Cave.

Due to the extremely high number of Pokémon, the sections were added for ease of sorting/tracking. There are no other effects on gameplay that I know of.

I think you need a certain number of style points or some such. The easiest way I found is simply spam bang changes at 500 a pop. Took out about 11 grand or so I think. So 20+ changes of bangs. The stylist will great you differently so you will know when the pigtails and the ponytail are available.

I got my Style points by going through Furfrou designs. Each grooming is 300, and once I went through the entire list, I had picked up enough points to get into the boutique in Lumiose. I haven't checked for new hair options yet though. Still, if grooming is worth as many style points as a haircut, Furfrou would be cheaper.

Also, take note, once you open the folder icon, you have to move to the second page (right arrow on the side of the bottom screen) to find O-Powers. Also, you can't use or activate them (or any feature of that folder) without your wireless being turned on, though you do not need to be hooked to the internet.

To further this, O-Powers take a renewable resource to use. The row of little green dots at the bottom of the screen when you open the O-Power page indicate how much power you have to use on your O-Powers. Each takes its own amount. Using it on yourself (through the O-Power page) is more expensive than using it on someone else. Any more detailed information should be able to be found on my O-Powers guide, which I will repost.

Each time you play a minigame, it resets part of the meters. Any three games played through (even Endless mode where you lose immediately on purpose) will reset both a Pokémon's Enjoyment and Fullness, allowing you to feed it and pet it to get more affection.

As you get basic Affection hearts, you'll eventually raise the Affection level. When your level goes up, the Pokémon will cheer and dozens of hearts will rush out at once. You really can't miss it.

Raising Affection seems to be permanent (I know it is permanent once you max it), and gives various bonuses. Increase Experience, increased Evasion, increased Critical Chance. You Pokémon can heal itself from status effects (so you don't worry about them) or even survive normally deadly hits with 1 HP left, like a Focus Band.


Minigames (to play you need at least three Pokémon):
Each has four difficulty modes: Easy, Normal, Hard, and Unlimited (which goes on until you fail)
-The first is Berry Picker. You drag berries from a tree to your Pokémon. There is one of each berry type, and each Pokémon requests a certain berry. More berries are added and the speed picks up as the difficulty increases.
-The second is Head It. Yarn falls from the top of the screen, and you tap your Pokémon to bounce it back up. Yarn falls faster and patterns are a little less consistent as difficulty increases.
-The third is Tile Puzzle. A moving picture of your Pokémon is broken into tiles. Each tile is then switched with another tile on the screen. Each tile is only moved once, so if you move a tile back correctly, you should always actually fix two tiles. Each picture shifts between scenes as you work on it. The pictures are split into more tiles as difficulty progresses.


Personal advice: Raise up the "Head it" minigame. It's easy to bounce the yarn up, and it gives great rewards for easy effort. Once you reach unlimited, play it and earn about 300 to 400 points, and you should get six excellent Poképuffs. If you five star it (around 900 points) you'll get even better ones, but it's not worth the extra time.

The Best Way To Get Good Poképuffs:
Play Unlimited Head it, and chain 15 bounces together. This should net you at least 60 to 65 points (45 from bouncing, plus 15 for the chain), which is enough to one-star Unlimited Mode. This will reward you with two of the second best Poképuffs in the game (again, to get the best, you need to 5-star Unlimited, which takes at least ten times as long, and risks making mistakes). Three games with two Poképuffs rewarded each will get you 6 Poképuffs, which is exactly how much a Pokémon with an empty stomach can eat, so this method is not only a fast way to get good Poképuffs, it is also perfectly sustainable for keeping your Pokémon fed as optimally as possible.

Pokémon Super Training Guide: This is REALLY long, and I'm sorry about that.

Pokémon Super Training is a great new way to maximize the Effort Values of your Pokémon.

As per previous games, a single Pokémon can have 510 Effort Values total. Each Effort Value (EV) is worth one point in a stat to a level 100 Pokémon. However, unlike other Pokémon games, you can now only put 252 EVs in a single stat, instead of the 255 of older games, preventing you from wasting 3 EVs which won't yield a stat boost.

Super Training starts with two tutorial level which teach you the basics. Essentially, the game is a shooter. The Circle Pad controls your Pokémon's movement, and the stylus controls your aim and fires shots.

You face a series of Pokémon balloons. Each has targets which appear on them as you play. Hit the targets and your score goes up. Meet the score that is the goal for the level, and you complete the level. However, many Pokémon balloons move, and some have barriers, other balloons blocking for them, or the ability to fight back.

Barriers can be broken either through doing enough damage, or by hitting their yellow weak spot directly. Guardian balloons can be killed by damage, but will regenerate over time, so it is better to try to fire around them. Balloons will fight back by firing giant soccer balls at you. Evade them by moving, or press L to activate your Shield. Just know that, like Protect, your Shield can't be used repeatedly, so get used to dodging.

Adding EVs to your Pokémon increases how they perform in Super Training, in addition to the stat boosts. Increasing Attack or Special Attack increases the points you score with each hit. Increasing Defense or Special Defense decreases the damage you take from soccer balls and increases the speed at which you charge shots up. Increasing HP increases the size of your ball's hit zone, allowing you to hit targets more easily. And increasing Speed increases how fast you can move to avoid hits, and possibly how fast your shot travels.

When you complete a level, you earn Effort Value points. The first two tutorial levels (which you can't escape) yield 4 EVs in Defense apiece, for a total of 8 Defense EVs. There is also a "Target Time" for each level that gives your Pokémon a little medal if they can beat it within the time, and the game will keep track of your fastest times, and which Pokémon earned them.

After you complete those levels, you unlock the first tier of Super Training. You can choose from any of the six stats: Special Attack, HP, Attack, Special Defense, Speed, and Defense. Completing one of these levels will reward you with 4 EVs in the corresponding stat. Complete all the levels, and you unlock the second tier. IMPORTANT NOTE: You do not have to complete them all with a single Pokémon, you just have to clear each level once with any Pokémon to unlock tier two.

Tier two has the same breakdown, but each level now yields 8 EVs per level, and each level is generally harder. Complete every tier two level (again, you do not need to do it with a single Pokémon), and you unlock tier three. In Tier 3, you face harder levels, and each is worth 12 EVs, making it the fastest way to increase EVs in Super Training.

After any individual Pokémon has acquired 510 EVs, that particular Pokémon is allowed to enter Tier 4 (you may have to unlock Tiers 2 and 3 if you got your EVs through battle instead of Super Training, I'm not sure). In Tier 4, you no longer get EVs. Instead, you get items. Some of these items are rare (almost every course seems to be tied to an Evolution Stone, for example), and what item they give you depends on how fast you clear them, with some luck thrown in. Also, these levels are far harder than the old ones, and, unlike Tiers 1 through 3, you cannot take on any one you wish, you have to unlock them one at a time.

Completing all 6 Tier 4 missions with one Pokémon will allow that Pokémon to take on Tier 5, the final tier. You'll get more items as rewards, but the rules are essentially the same as Tier 4.

Friend Safari Guide

Upon completing the game and beating the Elite 4 (massive spoilers), you unlock the Safari Zone. Your Safari Zone has a type, which relates to the Pokémon which can be found within it. Mine, for example, is Normal. Unfortunately, your Safari Zone only has three Pokémon in it. You are stuck with those three Pokémon and can never change them, as far as we know.

However, anyone who is listed as a "Friend" in your PSS has their own Safari Zone, and you can visit that Safari Zone as well.

Thus, for each friend on the PSS, you get another Safari Zone and three more Pokémon to catch in it. Though you can of course get duplicates if you have bad luck. However, you should note that if one of your friends has not beaten the Elite Four (and done a Game Sync or been online since, so Nintendo can know about it), you will only be able to see two of their Pokémon, and the third will unlock once they have completed the game.

The benefits of the Friend Safari are thus:

You can get Pokémon you can't otherwise get in-game.
Pokémon in the Friend Safari have an increased chance of having their Hidden Ability.
Pokémon in the Friend Safari have an increased chance of being Shiny.
Pokémon in the Friend Safari always have at least two IVs that are 31, the maximum possible value.

Kalos Pokédex Explanation - Very Short

The Kalos Pokédex is broken into three regions. Central, Coastal, and Mountain. You start with just the Central Pokédex, and the others are added on as you enter their respective territories. You first get the Coastal Pokédex after you leave Connecting Cave.

Due to the extremely high number of Pokémon, the sections were added for ease of sorting/tracking. There are no other effects on gameplay that I know of.

Y'know, I've had days to play, and I'm nowhere near that far. I only just picked up Surf, and I'm hunting down where I can use it and what I can find with it.

Still not a Grand Duke, but I'm working on it. Also need to build my money back up after splurging on Day 2 of the Lumiose Boutique (got a nifty black fedora, which isn't nearly wide-brimmed enough).

It took me 4-5 days of doing 4-5 runs a day before getting promoted to Grand Duke, and the Black Writ is totally worth it. Level 65 Audinos? Yes please.

Apparently Game Freak Battle Director Morimoto announced some extremely interesting new information for breeding, and testing has confirmed it (it's translated from Japanese and not worded perfectly, so confirmation was needed).

Have one parent hold a Destiny Knot. The child will now inherit five stats from the parents instead of three. That's right, only one of the child's stats will be new. This is kind of huge for breeding and stat manipulation, especially with Friend Safari and the Baby Pokémon glitch already increasing your rate of 31 IV acquisition. Perfect IV Pokémon are going to be a lot more common.

Especially since either parent can now pass down Egg Moves, and even fathers can pass down Hidden Abilities now (as long as you are breeding within a single species).



Also, if you are hunting for Shinies, there is another new way to get them: Chain Fishing. Stay in one place and catch fish. Don't move, and don't miss a cast (Suction Cups on the lead to help ensure bites helps), and your chance of seeing a Shiny result goes up and up and up the longer you go. Like the Shiny Radar, but for fishing.

So I'm progressing through the story. The more I play, the shorter the stuff on my character ; I expect I'll beat the Elite 4 wearing a bikini.

So... I started the Wonder Trade run with an extra rule. The rules for the Wonder Trade run are apparently 1 team to use for Wonder Trade and beat the entire game with them. The extra rule I'm adding is that I have to re-WT any pokemon that faints, regardless of level. That should make any time I invest in them that more more important. I say that because, the team I have... is terrifying.

I got lucky with the Chespin since it's Adamant and has it's hidden ability. There's going to be a lot of time spent on Poke Amie and Super Training. Since I only have 1 copy of the game, and given how much time I've put into it, there is no way in hell I'm restarting to do a WT run. I did however WT 6 extra Pokemon to see what my theoretical team would have been.

This has always been a pet peeve of mine with Pokemon. Maybe back when data needed to be stored on the cartridge I could buy it. But with the addition of SD cards the lack of support for multiple save files really makes me want to scream.

Anyways I got 6 badges now and have begun breeding. Probably should have started earlier since I wanted a flame team, but there are a number of handy fire types in this one available fairly early. But I am glad I got my Arcanine and Houndoom now. They have got to be two of my favorites. Hmm... I seem to like the canines. Maybe I should go with a Canine team. Arcanine, Houndoom, Mightyena, Furfou, Stoutland, and I am not sure on a sixth. Technically there are other Dog'ish mons, but a lot of them aren't Four Legged Doggies!

i'd say Manectric is dog-like enough to make the team (and will provide more type variety)

basically each pokemon has a "gene" value for each stat between 0 and 31, and when you breed, some random selection (3, or 5 with a destiny knot held by [M/F?]) are selected from one of the parents and given to the baby instead of being randomly generated

How can you see the value that's given?

I'm hardcore so I just reverse engineer the stat calculation to solve for it (which requires getting your baby to level 12 to be anything near accurate).

I think there's an NPC somewhere that evaluates them for you.

It doubles the Effort Values gained in combat (I don't think anyone has actually proven whether it works in Super Training yet, but I've heard that it does there as well).

It is contagious around Pokémon in the party. It lasts only a couple of days. However, its effects last even after the infection ends (the infection itself is actually more of a "contagious state").

A Pokémon left in the computer will keep the Pokérus indefinitely, which allows you to spread it to pretty much every Pokémon you have by monitoring those you have and simply always making sure that you leave a few Pokémon with it in the PC all the time, and keep rotating them out so the timers stay fresh.

Doubling the rate of EV acquisition makes strengthening Pokémon obviously go much faster.

PS: If he has a spare Pokémon with it, is he willing to trade it? I can always use more infectious organisms. I have several decent trade Pokémon, including version exclusives from either version, so let me know what he wants for it.

It's been mentioned on Bulbapedia and Serebii that the Pokerus does not affect Super Training, just like the other EV boosting items don't.

I'm unsure if you're asking for just stat information, or a breeding guide in general. Either way, it's a chance for me to type some more. Skip to the "Stat Inheritance" section for the information specific to stats.

-Breeding Basics-

Egg Groups: Who can breed with whom.
Each different Pokémon species is part of an Egg Group. Any male Pokémon can breed with any female Pokémon in the same Egg Group. The Egg Groups are usually based on physical characteristics.

For example, there are three different Water-based Egg Groups. One is for standard fish like Magikarp, one is for amphibians like Poliwag, and one is for invertebrates like Tentacool. There are plenty of other groups as well. On for mammals, one for reptiles, one for plants, etcetera. Keep in mind, however, that plenty of Pokémon are actually in multiple groups. Squirtle, for example, is grouped with both the Amphibian group and the Reptilian group.

If two Pokémon left in the Day Care can breed, you'll get a message saying that they like to spend time together when you talk to the Day Care man outside the center. If he says they prefer spending time with others, they won't produce an egg.

Pokémon without a gender cannot be bred through standard means, though they may still be a part of an Egg Group.

Breeding rules: Which child is produced.
When two Pokémon within the same Egg Group create an egg, the resulting Pokémon is going to be the lowest Evolution-form of the mother. Breeding a female Marowak with a male Feraligatr (again, both in the Reptilian Egg Group) results in a baby Cubone, the lowest Evolution-form of Marowak.

There are two small exceptions to this: Nidoran Male and Female are considered the same species, and breeding them can produce either offspring, not merely Nidoran Females. Illumise and Volbeat are also considered the same species and follow the same rules. There are no female Volbeat or female Nidoran Males, but you can get more of either by breeding Illumise and Nidoran Female.

Also, the "Baby" Pokémon further break this rule. If you breed a female Azumarill, for example, you will get only Marill as children, not the younger Azurill. This is because the "Baby" Pokémon are only able to be obtained by breeding while the parent hold on to the corresponding incense. To get an Azurill, for example, you would need to let Azumarill hold the Sea Incense (available at the stand in Coumarine City) while breeding. Each Incense is used to get a different Baby Pokémon.

Egg Moves: What the child learns.
The child Pokémon can learn moves from either parent.

The child will learn any moves it can naturally learn from leveling up (in its current evolution) that both parents know.

The child will learn any TM, HM, or move tutor moves that either parent knows (it was only from the Father until this generation, but I believe it can now learn them from either), that the child can also learn.

The child can also learn certain "Egg Moves" from breeding if, again, either parent knows them (this was also originally restricted to only learning Egg Moves from the father, but now can be learned from either parent, confirmed). These moves are different for every Pokémon, but they essentially are a list of moves available only through breeding. Outrage, for example, can never be learned by a Charizard, but breeding a female Charizard with a male Dragonite that knows Outrage will result in a baby Charmander with Outrage. You'll have to either experiment a lot or look up the possible Egg Moves for each Pokémon you want to try these on.

Stat Inheritance: Why breeding is good for stats.
Every Pokémon has 6 stats: HP, Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed.

Each stat is assigned a number when the Pokémon is created. These go from 0 to 31, and the stat gets a corresponding boost from these "Individual Values" (hereafter referred to as IVs). For example, at level 100, a Pokémon with a 31 in the Attack IV will have an Attack stat 31 points higher than a Pokémon of the same species with a 0 in the Attack IV.

IVs are set when the Pokémon is created, and never change.

Babies inherit three IVs from their parents. They can be taken from either parent, and can be any three IVs.

Example:
You have a female Pikachu with 31 Special Attack IV and 0 Speed IV.
You have a male Pikachu with 0 Special Attack IV and 31 Speed IV.
The baby can inherit the mother's Special Attack and the father's Speed (and one other stat IV from either parent), resulting in a baby Pikachu with a 31 in each.
Of course, the baby could also inherit both 0's, resulting in an incredibly weak baby, relatively. But you can always breed them again.

Natures: How they change stats, and how to pass them on.
Each Pokémon also has a "Nature". You can view it from the Ribbon page, above the date met. Each nature changes two stats. A "Mild" Natured Pokémon, for example (like my Greninja), will have increased Special Attack, and decreased Defense. These modifications are 10% of the stat's value. So if a neutral Greninja had 100 in both Defense and Special attack, a Mild Greninja of the same level would have 90 Defense and 110 Special Attack.

You can view the changes on a Pokémon's stat page. If the name of a stat is red, it is being increased. If it is blue, it is being decreased.

Please note that there are 5 Natures which boost the same stat that they penalize, resulting in neutral Natures.


When breeding, if either parent holds an Everstone, the child will be hatched with that parent's Nature. If both parents hold Everstones, the child will have a 50/50 chance to get either. This lets you help ensure that the child is born with the correct Nature when it finally inherits the correct stats.

Other Items that affect breeding.
The Everstone and the Incenses are not the only items that change the resulting baby.

There are certain items which give Effort Values (EVs) in battle when equipped to a Pokémon. The Power Weight gives 4 HP EVs. The Power Bracer gives 4 Attack EVs. The Power Belt gives Defense, the Power Lens gives Special Attack, the Power Band gives Special Defense, and the Power Anklet gives Speed.

If a parent holds one of these while breeding, it will guarantee that the corresponding stat will pass from that parent to the baby. If both parents hold an item (even if not the same item), it will pick one of the two to inherit, then take the other two inherited stats at random. You cannot guarantee more than one inheritance stat this way.


The Destiny Knot increases the number of IVs that the child inherits. If either parent holds this item, the child will inherit five IVs from the parents instead of the usual three. Which IVs are chosen, and from which parent, are still random.

Abilities: How to pass them on.
Some Pokémon, especially those gotten from Horde battles or the Friend Safari, will have Hidden Abilities that are different from what the Pokémon usually has.

Other Pokémon can naturally have more than one Ability (such as Absol, who can have either Super Luck or Pressure, in addition to its Hidden Ability, which is Justified).

These Abilities can all be passed on to the baby as well. When normally breeding, between any two Pokémon of the same Egg Group, the mother has an 80% chance of passing down a non-Hidden Ability, or a 60% chance of passing down a Hidden Ability.

Supposedly, the Father can now pass down a Hidden Ability as well, as long as both parents are members of the same species (for example, the male Blazikenite from the event can now pass down Speed Boost to a baby Torchic, as long as he is breeding with a female Blazikenite).

Abilities cannot be passed down when breeding with a Ditto, and the child will know either its regular Ability, or one of its regular Abilities if it can have two, at random.

Ditto: Breeding the unbreedable.
Some Pokémon do not have a gender, or are only available as male (such as Throh and Sawk). Or you might not have caught a female to breed with. These Pokémon can still be bred, however, thanks to Ditto. Ditto can breed with almost any non-legendary, non-baby Pokémon in the game.

Putting Ditto in the Day Care with any non-legendary, non-baby Pokémon (except Nidorina, Nidoqueen, and Unown) will result in producing a baby which relates to the other parent. A Ditto and a Metagross, for example, results in a baby Beldum, even though Metagross is not a female parent, and cannot breed except with Ditto.

You cannot breed Dittos at all. Two Dittos together will not produce an Egg, and with any other parent, will only produce an Egg that corresponds to the other parent.

Other than this, Ditto works almost the exact same way as other Pokémon. The same inheritance and move rules apply.

As an add-on to your breeding guide, for some reason this Gen Nidorina refuses to breed with Nidorino, so you'll need to either try something else from the same egg group, or just breed the Nidorino with a Ditto.

Actually, this is true in every Generation, and I only mentioned it briefly, in the Ditto section.

Nidorina and Nidoqueen cannot breed (even though Nidorino and Nidoking can). They are in the "Undiscovered" Egg Group, as are the Baby Pokémon and the Legendaries. They are the only non-Legendary, non-Baby Pokémon in this Egg Group apart from Unown. They cannot breed, period.

Nidoran Female can breed, however.


As a side note, this makes them susceptible to the Undiscovered Egg Group capture glitch: As with all members of the Undiscovered Egg Group, every Nidorina that you find in the wild will have at least 3 perfect IVs. Of course, since Nidorina can't breed, even once you evolve her, the glitch isn't as useful on her as it is on the Baby Pokémon that can be captured: Riolu, Azurill, Mime Jr., Smoochum, Togepi, Budew, Chingling, and Mantyke. Plus whichever you find in Friend Safari, if you get any.

Also worth noting: Between the Baby Pokémon you can catch in the wild and their evolutions, you can cover every Egg Group in the game. Potentially spreading their boosted stats to any Pokémon who can breed without a Ditto.

Oh, I forgot to mention that.

While Psypoke's is awesome, Metalkid's IV calculator is updated for X/Y, and the changes to the Pokémon which have had their stats altered by X/Y (for example, Alakazam's stats changed slightly). Not all of the information has been 100% confirmed yet, but those that have are implemented here, and those that have not will be once Smogon and Serebii's testing confirms them.

While I think Psypoke's is a little easier to use, and I love the fact that it shows you the possible range for each stat, I do like having a calculator for the next gen ones.


Also, there is a gentleman in Kiloude City who will assess the IVs of your Pokémon, and will tell you the average spread of the Pokémon's IVs, and their best one. If you have any perfects (or any in the 0-5 range) he will mention them specifically, and point them out (all of them), so he's a very good in-game tool as well.

I've got like a dozen infected at the moment. I was mass infecting to wonder trade. I have the version exclusive I wanted(Houndoom) so all I am really looking for at the moment is a Mega Stone for it. Don't really like it when such things are 'post-game' since I don't usually play post-game much. Anyways for the most part I don't care what I get in turn since the infected are spares I had laying about!

Yeah, I would say the Eevees are cats. The Legendary Beasts are a bit of mix and match, but both Entei and Raikou are definitely catish enough to be on a Cat team. Suicune is Doggy enough for me to call a Dog though and has four legs :D. As a Jackal/Anubis thing Lucario could fall into a Dog theme. But he is upright and I would look for four legs(Granbull has the same issue). However, Manectric is definitely the more cannon choice and is readily available to me even at my current point in the game. And better yet is usable competitively thanks to Mega Manectric(and even regular Manectric is better than Mightyena!).

Hmm.. Manectric(Mega), Mightyena, Stoutland, Granbull, and Arcanine all have Intimidate access. If only there was one more Dog with Intimidate! That would be an Intimidating party! I know. . . that was horrible!

Anyone interested should know that I picked up a pair of Tropius. I've been seeking him out because Tropius is one of the best HM Slaves in this game, and combines perfectly with Bibarel.

Tropius naturally learns Sweet Scent, and can be taught Fly, Flash, Strength, Cut, and Rock Smash. This pairs perfectly with Bibarel, who can be taught Surf, Waterfall, Strength, Cut, and Rock Smash.

Tropius:
Sweet Scent - Instantly starts a battle with wild Pokémon, and a Horde battle if possible in the Route you're on.
Fly - Transportation between Pokécenters.
Flash - Decreases encounter rate in caves.
Strength - Move Boulders.

Bibarel:
Cut - Remove spiny trees.
Rock Smash - Break rocks for treasure and Pokémon.
Surf - Transportation over water.
Waterfall - Transportation up and down waterfalls.

This gives you access to all the best Field Moves (no Softboiled or Milk Drink, but pretty much all the others) on just two Pokémon.

I'll be breeding them for a while to build up a stock, so let me know if you need one!


EDIT: Also, breeding now apparently drops the baby into the Pokéball that was used to catch the mother, rather than a standard one. Because the first Tropius I hatched came out in an Ultra Ball.

2nd EDIT: I also made Grand Duke. I'm about to face the Fairy Gym. Booyaka!

On your in-game Friends List, my character should have a black hat with a white band around it, a black shirt, dark brown hair, blue eyes, and a grey button on the hat. Best way I can think of to point myself out. Offer to trade with me, and just toss up whatever. I'm not too picky. If anyone has Y, I'd welcome a female Skrelp or Spritzee (I can also offer Swirlix's for those). Otherwise, just offer whatever. These Tropius are here to help, I don't really care about what I get in exchange.

Also, if you want any of those specific moves on your Tropius before I trade it, just let me know. I have the TMs/HMs for all of the Field Moves Tropius can learn (it hatches with Sweet Scent), so I can outfit it with whatever.

Houndoom has Unnerve as its Hidden Ability, that's close?

A Tropius would be great, and as far as outfitting it with moves, Pokemon with HM moves can't be traded. I've got a fair amount of things from WTs and FSZs that I could offer, but we'll see when the time comes.

Right before going to fight (and beat) the Elite 4.

On that note, if you have beaten the E4, make sure you get the game synced with pokemon-gl (and make sure you do get it set up to sync if you haven't already) so it unlocks more Friend Safari Zone pokemons for your friends.

I beat the main quest today. Still feeling great about this game! Not really sure how much extra stuff I will do, but either way I had lots of fun!

I am just about to battle the fourth gym leader and I have gone a bit overboard on the whole leveling thing, I guess.

My four mains are absurdly powerful. I've yet to meet something one or more of them can't wreck. Also Archard is equipped with a Metronome and has Power-Up Punch, so if I just use that one move by the time he's on the third or fourth consecutive use he will one-shot things he is not very effective against. It's glorious.

I've defeated the Elite 4, so now I'm just trying to Catch em all or something :D

Finally ready to take on the Fairy Gym. Ugh, catching a female Carnivine and Barboach took so long. I hate the skewed gender ratios on some Pokémon (although Barboach was mostly just really rare in general). Also, at some point I'll need to go back and catch all the Pokémon again to get them in Luxury Balls. I love Luxury Balls. They're the only long-term use ball, and they're to coolest looking. When I found out any Pokémon I bred would wind up in them if the parent was caught in them, I knew I had to use them for everything. Sure, they're expensive, but money really isn't a problem for a Grand Duke.

My team is constantly shifting and updating between three or four teams (a first for the series, usually I am extremely set on a single team). I'm planning to go in with:

Greninja, Level 100 (he carries my Amulet Coin, and will be swapped out without fighting)
Gengar, Level 54
Ampharos, Level 37
Blaziken, Level 48
Charizard, Level 37 (with Charizardite X, rather than my more preferred Charizard, who is carrying a Charizardite Y)
Absol, Level 75

I'd just like to share Greninja's stats here briefly:
HP: 259
Attack: 215
Defense: 139
Sp. Atk: 332
Sp. Def: 167
Speed: 331

Look at that Speed and Sp. Atk! For so long, he was rushing with the two neck-and-neck. Sp. Atk would pull ahead by a point, and then Speed would catch back up. I honestly wasn't sure if they would wind up equal or not. But as he got closer to 100, Speed fell behind by two points at one level, and I realized that it would probably wind up this way.

I love the availability and variety of Pokémon in this game. There are still tons more I would love to use, and I probably will set up daily teams once I hit post-game to just go through and have a blast with all the Pokémon.

Oh, yes. Mareep is Horde-only. So Sweet Scent is your best friend for getting your Ampharos. Pick up a Tropius! They come with it. :)

Basically, I only had one Pokemon faint during one of the Elite Four. I totally trounced the champion. Not saying this like it is hard to do, but I have to admit it was satisfying since my last playthrough of Pokemon Black I somewhat struggled since I didn't really build up my party in that game that well.

Oh, and I'll probably try to get a more complete Pokedex, but I usually just stop out of nowhere. The main game is usually enough for me when it comes to Pokemon, but you never know! I am actually going to mess around with it today. Also, here are my last two pics!

Yea, the Elite 4 was kinda easy, I one hit killed most of their Pokemon, until Siebold, but I was trying to keep my Delphox alive instead of just plowing through. And as of now I just need 6 FSZ Pokemon, Articuno, and more evolutions/breedings and I'll be done what can be done in game until the bank goes live.

Anything put up for a reasonable exchange is gone within moments of being put up.

Everything else is asking for one of the Legendary Trio.

How fast can you speed run this game? I'd rush through Y several times to stockpile Yveltals for picking up rare Pokémon if it was worth it (although Xerneas is way better).

I've been getting what I need with FSZ Dittos xD. For the most part they'll be gone in minutes. Articuno is going to be the hard one though, almost everyone seems to want previous Gen legendarys or the 3 'possible event' Pokemon from the rumor.

I'm still proceeding at a very leisurely pace. Give it another week and maybe I'll have finally beaten the game. Maaaybe. :shifty:

Yes, after you've beat the Elite 4, saved and synced with the PGL through Game Sync, then it unlocks the third Pokemon in your FSZ for your friends. Now you have to be online in game to sync, and it only syncs every few hours, so it may take awhile after you're done the main story for it to go through.

I think it brings up the Trainer name, not the Friend Card name. I think Tasura got one of my Pokémon (what is the plural of Tropius anyway?), so ask him for confirmation of that. Although, apparently, I was taking queues from Jinx, because it seems I somehow missed your Friend Code. Sorry. :( Friended now.

I also switched out my Fedora for an Outdoor Cap (still black). Mostly because it's more of a hipster hat than a Fedora. Just because due to the way the characters are constructed, getting a full-brimmed Fedora really wouldn't work, but it still leaves me unhappy with the result.

Currently breeding up an ideal Lucario, or trying to. I got a male and a female Riolu with alternating perfect stats (the male is perfect in HP, Defense, and Speed, and the female is perfect in Attack, Special Attack, and Special Defense), so once I get them evolved I should be able to breed until I get a 5/6 perfect to make my main Lucario. This generation really has been a boon to breeding. It's still a pain, but it is far easier and more enjoyable than it has ever been before.

Also, in order to see someone's third slot Pokemon for the FSZ you both have to be online at the same time after they've beat the E4 and game synced. I know this because a friend who hasn't played the game since she beat the E4 logged in and couldn't see my 3rd slot even though Nico has been able to see it for days. I signed into the game and she immediately was able to see it.

I'm nearly earning 1,000,000 3.5 million Goomies per second. -_-'

Pretty much everything. I hear everyone complain about it, but this is only the second thing I've found it can't do, the other also being a homemade flash game.

It doesn't usually cause me any problems, and it does everything I want it to do. So why switch? No one has ever answered that question for me. Heck, most of the other browsers I've seen and tried just seem to be versions of IE with special "helpful" toolbars added (which I loathe and never want).

Give me a good reason to switch, and a good suggestion as to which to switch to, and I will. I don't exactly have any love for IE. It's just...there. It came on my PC, and never really screwed up.

So Nico asked for this at one point, and I got bored enough to make it. http://goo.gl/WKS9zF it's a list of all Pokemon currently not obtainable in X/Y and it lists their 'class' (Standard/Starter/Legendary) and what game to get them in, that's closest to Gen 6 for easiest trading. I even threw in basic directions as to where they can be caught.

Ok, so I almost immediately run into the same problem Candies had: It's boring. I've gotten up to level 5, with over 3000 Goomies, and there is nothing to do except click. Where the heck is the content, and why did both of these games think that boring you out of your wits for half an hour is the best way to get you engaged? I gave up on Candies before I even reached the combat, and I'm about to give up on Goomy Clicker without having discovered anything worthwhile about it.

If you gave up on Candies before you even reached the quests, I hardly think you can give an opinion on it. That's when the game starts getting fun and becomes challenging.

Christ, woman, how? I've been spending furiously, and I'm still only on 41M per second. xD

Goomy Clicker is based off of Cookie Clicker which has less content than Candies to begin with. Goomy Clicker is also unfinished. It's mostly just there to leave open in a tab for fun I think. :shobon:

If I hadn't already spent multiple hours on it, that might be fair.

At least FFXIII did something to try to get you through the boring slog before the actual content unlocks.

And then you have to trudge through the forest to collect wood, and there were several other steps that I'd forgotten. Heck I had tons of candies by leaving the page open for a full day, it was just that there wasn't enough engagement for me to get through to the rest of the game. Even though, from what I've heard, once you get into it, there's a lot there.

In other news, my Riolu breeding is going well, and I'm almost ready to go back to the main game!

Everyone likes to run a physical Lucario, but I'm planning to set up the perfect Special Sweeper. It should be fun. :)

OK. I spent a little bit of time, with the help of Tasura, to put this lovely little link together. It's fairly self explanatory in that it is the list of Friend Safari Zones. Every user who has typed in here, presented their 3DS Friend Code in here or the Console Codes Thread, and have either added myself or Tasura is in this list. If people such as Denmark, Mister Adequate, or Pike want to add their 3DS Friend Codes or there are any updates that need to be made to this, please let me know or just type what needs to be updated in the comments section. I'll be happy to update it.

Obviously, if you add anybody in here, make it clear you added them. For example, I added Mr. Shauna, Bunny, and Aulayna. Also, I think Endless has mentioned the method for your third FSZ Pokemon to be discovered. If not, then you have to sync with Pokemon Global Link, beat the Elite Four, and make sure you are online at the same time as the others who have your friend code. Yeah, I know, it's kind of a pain.

The FSZ uses 3DS name, not character name. So unless you want to know for trading purposes you can just go check the FSZ and compare 3DS name to character portrait.

It might not be necessary indeed, it might just be that seeing each other is enough. Nevertheless, the PGL is cool and you can share stuff with your trainer-friends such as pictures, events, medals...

Hmm.. So I am Electric, eh? Electric may not be my favorite type(mostly because I don't particularly like most electrics compared to the likes of Growlithe), but I always did like Electabuzz. Though I always thought he should have been part fighting.

So now I am 99.99% done Y (Until the Bank goes live). The only Pokemon I don't have in my Dex, that is catchable in game, is Articuno. I have all the Y Mega stones, I have completed all Looker missions, I have achieved Max Style, and I have all the O-Powers (The last one you can't get until you have max style). The only other thing I could chase after is getting 1 of every Vivillon pattern, but I'm only missing 6, a couple of which are super rare, namely Ocean which is only available to Hawaii and at least one small island off of Madagascar.

Pokedex: Seen 601, Caught 594. (595 is what's available including Articuno)

Actually, I'll add in the Trainer names too, but I'd need to either meet the person, I believe, or just have you all put them in here. It'll make it a bit more inclusive for us all.
