my paper talks about things like sales tax, not earbuds :(

I think of them as earbuds as well. I hate them and find them horribly uncomfortable.

I use headphones (or more accurately, a headset, as it's only one earphone and a microphone) for work.

I'm gonna have to go with... The compromise. Earphones when in public and headphones when at the computer or whatever nefarious purpose they've been commissioned for. Especially the big pillowy kind that gives one the impression that a bunny is hugging one's head.
