Hmmm... I'm kind of thinking about joining, but more than likely I would promptly drop out during the first round after listening to my recording, due to the fact that I can't stand hearing my own voice.

Record your self singing on a microphone (even if it's crappy), and send it in. If you need programs to help you, Audacity is a good free recording program, and Dropbox is a nice free file uploading program.

What I meant was, "Are there any guidelines to what song I can choose, and I just choose whatever I want?"
