I dabbled lightly in anime until I was 15 and we got extended cable. I was able to watch a huge array of anime for free and I became more or less addicted ever since. I only watch what I can. I don't go out of my way. I pick up cheap dvd from thrifts and I read obsessively about the anime I'm missing 'cause I can't afford it at the moment.

Highschool of the Dead is a great series. I love Death Note. Samurai Champloo rocks. Code Geass was surprisingly amazing. Cowboy Bebop is recommended * n even though I haven't even finished it yet.
