Nah, I get the disappointment even if I don't particularly share it. You know, we had action games back in 1997, but there were plenty of people who preferred the slower pace of something turn based like FFVII. It gave you more time to think, it didn't rely on having good reflexes (I have terrible reflexes - it's why I suck at many action games) and it allowed you to micro-manage your entire party, and tell each of them exactly what to do. And that's very appealing to a lot of RPG players - and still is, just play the latest Pokemon or something tactical like XCOM. Flashy action isn't a pre-requisite even these days.
And nothing happened to suddenly make those bad game mechanics. I'm not entirely sure why they fell out of favour, it's not like Final Fantasies 1-10 sold badly or anything. They're only 'outdated' because Square stopped using them in Final Fantasy, and truth be told I'm not entirely sure that's a decision that's worked out for them.
