Actually the shield doesn't add anything to your defense it just gives you the chance to evade attacks.

Casting Protect.

I thought blink raised your evasion, shell increased magic defense and shield increased defense.

spells?

Blink raises evasion
Shell increases magic defense
Protect increases defense

equipment?

Shields give a minor evade bonus while giving an int. and spirit penalty of 70 @.@

Armor isn't an action in battle. Sorry.
