If there were no nasty things to infect your computer, there'd be no need for anti-virus software. Does this mean there could be a possibility that the companies which produce the anti-virus software, also produce most of the virus' as well? So they could be basically making all these virus' to wreck computers, then selling software to combat their own creations, all in the name of profit. Then they release yearly "updates" to fight their new creations.

I find it hard to believe that most of these things are the work of "nerds with too much time on their hands". The whole anti-virus software industry could well be a sinister plot to wring yet more money from the consumer's pocket. :(
