"Quite"
I'd say your right on there. Let's face it, aliens invading 1800's earth wouldn't even be interesting because nothing but an act of god would be able to save them. Modern man is so secure in technologies ability to solve all our problems however that when we find that our technology can't do squat, we can realize just how vulnerable we are.Quote:

I saw it yesterday and i loved it.
(SPOILER)The scene where they attack the boats was so sad I though.
actually it would probably be a matter of weeks instead of a matter of months.
The film definitely does have its issues. Mainly the fact that they chose to set it in modern day earth and did not really change the 100 year old story much at all to compensate for it.
One thing I do kind of wonder though is in the original book is the reason the earth's armies could not do anything against those machines was because of some force field that they could not penetrate. Because that is the reason they gave in the movie as to why our armies were so hapless against them (which was the same reason they gave in ID4).
You'd think they would be able to come up with a different reason as to why our technology does not work against the aliens rather than just the fact that they have some force field surrounding their ships that our weapons can't penetrate.
So with the way the movies put it. I guess all we would need to do to take over an alien planet is to create a forcefield around a couple of our planes and tanks and drop them off onto the planet and have them destroy everything in sight. And the aliens wouldn't be able to fight back because they wouldn't be able to get past our forcefield.
It's just so simple ;) ;)
I just got back from watching it and, man am I impressed.
Once they got into the basement it kinda slowed down, but all the destruction scenes were immense. Not because it was fun watching things blow up, but just watching how easily we were being killed.
(SPOILER)When the first Tripod came out and started killing everyone I felt really sad, just watching everyone running for their lives in terror while this big robot ripped through them with it's heat ray effortlessly as they disintegrated.
Also, the Car seen made me sad too. When the guy stole the car and began to drove away in it and got shot by someone else, I could've cried right there.
My mom's seeing it today but Im at home. Didn't feel like going. Too much tom cruise for me, I guess. But yeah, Tom is a great actor...
another big hole that I thought about. Which you probably do not want to read if you havn't seen it yet, so.

The Force field which was keeping the aliens invincible throughout the entire movie. Well how and why does that force field suddenly dissapear once the aliens get sick and we are suddenly able to use our weapons against them.
Nothing in the movie was ever remotely said as to how that force field dissapeared.
I guess the Aliens were too sick too keep it going, when that last Alien fell out of his tripod he could hardly move.

I saw it on Saturday, and it was great. Shame about the cow's arse of an ending.
The main thing I found bad was the many questions that lay unanswered at the end.
SPOILERS
1. What were they (aliens) doing on Earth anyway?
2. Tripods buried for thousands of years? Why not invade then?
3. What was with those vein-type things that lay all over the floor in the last half of the film.
4. Son runs into warzone. Warzone explodes. SUVs go flying. Son survives. W.T.F.
5. Why oh why did he kill that old man?
That is all.
He killed the old man because he was stark raving mad and probably would've given their location away to the aliens. The other stuff didn't make any sense though, you're right, though #1 and (I believe) #2 are explained by the book. As for the vein stuff, I have no idea about it. I assumed it was blood at first but blood definitely doesn't act like that.
Actually, #2 doesn't even happen in the book. In the book, the Aliens and all their tripods come down from space and cause mayhem. They don't come down from space and get in their tripods which were buried underground.
I think it was quite logical for the son to have survived though. He told Ray that he wanted to see it and ran up to the top of the hill. That was a pretty big explosion but I don't remember it coming past the hill. He probably got a little way in saw that something was going to cause the explosion ran for it, along with the rest of the soldiers then hitched a ride with the soldiers to Boston.
As for Boston being intact, by the time the Aliens had reached that area they were already feeling the effects of the Bacteria in the air and were probably half dead which made them lose control of their tripods, and force fields. Which is why Boston didn't take much, if any damage.
Sure the ending was quite happy and based on a large ammount of luck on Ray and his family's part. But it does make sense.
It's also true to the book which sees the Narrator being reunited with his family which he thought to be dead.
ok the movie ising excellent
the SFX brilliant the story great most of it was great i must read the book.
ok those veins were human blood which was processed through the aliens so it was just parts of the aliens and hyumans scattered and the effects on the planet caused it to form i think it was to alter the atmosphere for the aliens to survive
