Is the glass half-full, or half-empty?

I've always said that the glass is half empty. Contrary to popular belief, this doesn't make me a complete and utter pessimist. ;)

And then some wise guy will come along and say "It's blatantly obvious that I was referring to the volume of water/liquid in the glass, so stop nit-picking".

I'd say, "Hey, nice glass!"

This question is asked to gauge whether or not the answerer is an optimist or a pessimist, but it is so commonly used that it becomes a breeding ground for witty responses. I wonder if they have a new question to ask for others' outlooks on life.

There's a story I once read:

A philosopher, a priest, and a zen master were sitting around a table, one day. On this table was a glass containing fifty percent water and fifty percent air, roughly. The philosopher and the priest argued long and hard over whether the glass was half full or half empty.

"It's half-full, to show the wonderful bounty our Lord has given us!" cried the priest.
"It's half-empty, to show that we should cast off our complacency and work to better ourselves and the glass!" responded the philosopher.

They argued for some time, until the zen master looked up, took the glass, and prompty drank the water. So it was that they were enlightened.

Half-full. Then again, it's never empty.

No glass is ever half-full, because the concept of being half full would suggest that half of the empty space in the glass is filled. Since many atoms are just empty space, even a glass full of liquid is only semi-full. Ergo it can't be either ;)

How were they enlightened when the zen guy drank the water?

Its just water. Interpret it anyway you like. Maybe its comical, who knows?

If Ive drank from the glass then Im emptying it. So its half-empty.
