I think tidus was alive, because he was conscious. Sure, he was a dream of the fayth, but the dream of the fayth very much existed in the physical world.
But even if he was, as you said, neither alive nor dead, that means he did not die at the end of FFX (something that isn't alive can't die), and he was not revived in FFX-2 (you can't revive something that isn't dead).
