Thing is, MP is useless unless its full, you can have +1000 mp, yet if you're down to 50% mp that +1000mp is taking up spaces that can give beneficial stats, such as mnd. It seperates the good WHM's from the poor(as in bad player) whm's, though, of course when you rest, you put the mp gear back on. This is especially important in endgame, not so much exp, since.. you shouldn't really run out of MP in exp partys with "candy" and the multi options of refresh available.
Anyways, I think this is getting alittle advanced for simply a "need help with choosing character!!!" thread. :P
Heres my opinion, melee *can* be quite expensive, especially 40+ depending which job you are exactly, though most of the items are considered luxurys, but they will possibly hurt your party potential once people see your gear if it isn't sub-par.
Mages, specially BLM, can be expensive for buying spells, however, they have huge advantages over other jobs for future gil-making, especially in BCNMs.
A good starting job is taking warrior to 18, its a very good subjob used in quite alot of things, plus it gives you a good idea of how to work in a party by having an important role, tanking. Then get your monk to about 15 for a subjob after completing the quest, then take your war to 30 and unlock an advanced one of your choice.
Just a tip, always use food, even if its the cheapest thing possible(though benefits your job) thats fine, just upgrade when you get alittle more money, but always is some kind of it. Also, KEEP BEASTMAN SEALS - I cannot stress that enough, if you drop them, you WILL regret it later on.

Back to OoT. I do agree that if you are a serious WHM it is probably a good idea to get a MND build. However, I would say that it's on the bottom of the priority list. As a BRD I have a lot of extremely situational gear that is only useful for maybe one particular HNM but I still have.
My wife actually does carry around MND gear on her WHM for certain situations though normally she finds that it ends up taking up more space than being useful. She has her macros set in such a way to slowly de-equip MP gear and replace it with MND gear as she goes but for most situations it's more hassle than it's worth.
