Last movie you watched and your critique of it

I can understand the implicit desire to flesh out Holmes's character beyond the usual cipher of flawlessness, but I think it reflects poorly on modern culture that this latest film reduces him to an immature, unreliable, unshaven layabout who's only a genius in spite of himself—like you can't sell a hero right now unless he's kind of hapless and eccentric and has mussy hair. He doesn't even play the violin correctly. :huffy:

Like Allison said, at least they didn't write Watson to be a useless tagalong, though.

The (SPOILER)supernatural elements made me nervous all the while, but that just made it a greater relief when they (SPOILER)were dispelled and disproven at the end.

I would probably watch the implied sequel with (SPOILER)Moriarty.

Just saw Avatar in 3D, but not IMAX. Stunning film visually and fun, but man, are the characters predicable archetypes. I've heard a lot of comparisons to Dances with Wolves, and I see the resemblance, but I kept thinking of Dune a lot more when watching this.

Just watched "Once".

It's a lovely little movie with some good music in it. It made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

For some stupid reason, I watched The Ant Bully (I was ironing, and seriously had nothing better to do)..

..I utterly hated the childish little prat that was the child, or teen, no wait he had to have been a n00by little child..

It made me hate children even more..MINUS TWENTY OUT OF TEN

The White Ribbon. Absolutely incredible.

I watched Rear Window and 12 Angry Men this weekend. I decided to finally watch them because they've always been on the very top of the top 250 on IMDB. I was pretty underwhelmed with both of them, and I can't say my expectations were super high. They started out very suspenseful and kept it up for a good chunk of the movie, but both endings left me feeling a bit robbed of a real ending. I like how both of the movies were set in just one room for 95% of the movies though, not many movies could pull that off!

my thoughts about the endings:

Rear Window ending spoilerRear Window was entirely too predictable, I was waiting for some sort of twist, but when the ending kept going in the same direction the beginning and middle pointed towards it all just got too anti climatic.

They're good movies, but not among the top 20 movies ever made in my opinion.

Oh man, I loved Read Window! One of my favourite Hitchcocks! Yeah the story is pretty predictable but so were pretty much all movies back then. I still love movies that play mostly in only one room.

If you like those, you should watch Man From Earth.

I watched The Hangover a couple nights ago, it was hilarious. I was pretty much laughing the whole way through. :lol: Loved it! :up:

I should get to watching that one, it's the only Vengeance movie I haven't seen.

It wasn't bad to begin with, it was rad; it just gets really damn good as it goes on. It's one of my favorites, glad you like it.

Slumdog Millionaire - Once again, Danny Boyle creates a film completely unlike anything that he's done before. I think I've seen enough of his work now to say he's absolutely one of my favorite directors ever. This movie was so wonderful, inspiring and heartwarming that I couldn't look away for the entire duration. It was just absolutely fantastic.

There should be more movies like Slumdog. James Cameron should have copied the Slumdog plot for Avatar instead of Dances with Wolves.

Huge word-of-mouth hype surrounding this film. Almost as much as Slumdog Millionaire last Oscar season. So I had high expectations and was a little let down. It's a good film, but not as engaging as other people claim it is, nor did I find it's commentary on the state of the economy and the mood of the general public to be super insightful. I did like the profiles they did with the individual working man/woman. I thought those testimonials were touching and realistic. I loved all the performances in the film. Altogether though, I guess I just don't think the movie matches up to the hype. Similar to how I felt with Lost in Translation.

It didn't seem to mesh together for me. The concept was kinda neat, but not as neat/engaging as Alien, I guess 8)

I saw The Hangover a few hours ago. It really isn't as funny as I thought it would be, but I got a couple of laughs. Zach Galifianakis and Ken Jeong were the best part imo.

Also, just saw La Mala Educación. Very good and sensual movie that constantly went in another direction than the one expected. It made me remember how much I like Almodovar.

I was enamored of this movie for the entire running length. A lot of people said the story was weak, and I guess it wasn't amazing, but it really complemented the visual effects well. The effects really have set a new bar for immersion in films, and I was happy that it was used for a lot more than just a gimmick. I didn't even notice the long running time because it drew me in so much.

I really think Avatar was successful in being a cinematic experience as opposed to just a film. I really hope this creates a trend for film makers.

A little late, but I finally watched The Princess and the Frog and was pleasantly surprised. Music was good, all the characters were awesome and the plot was not as predictable as I thought it would be. I only wish it was doing better in theaters cause I really miss when Disney did 2D animation instead of letting Pixar do everything and importing Miyazaki's works.

Not that importing Miyazaki is a bad thing. :D

I saw Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs today, rather against my will. The overall movie was pretty dumb, but there were some parts where I laughed a little, admittedly. I fell asleep near the end though. Maybe I was laughing because I'll laugh at anything when I'm sleepy.


Also, I just now watched The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, which I almost bought the DVD of today. Now I'm glad I used a different method to watch it, since I'll be getting the special edition instead of the standard edition, because it was fantastic.

Hard to go wrong with Studio Ghibli, I remember seeing The Cats Returns in theaters when it came out in Japan. Unsubbed naturally but I was able to follow along anyway.

I just saw an online blog where they mentioned that Ponyo was in the five top grossing theatrical anime releases in the U.S.

Against my better judgement I went and saw Sherlock Holmes. I went in expecting changes from the source material and I went out of that movie thinking I spent my money rather well.

The last movie I watched was American Movie. Man did Mark's determination get me thinking and I actually started doing something with my life. Such a great movie, raises a load of feelings inside of you.

And American Movie is not in the same series as Scary Movie, Epic Movie, Superhero Movie and all those nonworthy Movie titled things.

Just saw Avatar, the plot was pretty damn predictable and if you've seen the trailers you basically learn in five minutes what takes half the movie to set up.

There were a few interesting ideas in here but mostly watch it for the spectacle and visuals. The plot was meh its all the special effects you watch it for. I personally found the planet to be more interesting than the plot or characters.

I've been hearing so much about the bad plot of avatar so I'm gonna suggest a movie with a GREAT plot for people to watch! And the movie is Man From Earth. The whole movie takes place in one guy John's house where he and his coworkers sit by the fireplace for the whole movie and talk. No action, no special effects, just speech. Still it was the most intriguing movie I've seen in a long time because of all the great insights this movie brings up. The movie is all about John telling the story of his life and boy does he have quite the story 'cause he's actually 14000 years old. I suggest YOU watch this movie!

I rewatched Garden State. It's about as great as I remember it to be but I didn't remember what a cheesy, predictable ending it had.

Saw Daybreakers last night. There were a few too many deus ex machina moments, but overall it was a pretty decent movie. Sure as heck beats New Moon. :p

I saw a lot of movies in the past two days, but I guess I will just talk about one.

(500) Days of Summer

This was a very quirky, funny film. I liked that a lot of the jokes were subtle too. Also very artsy! Made me think of the stuff people do in my school. The whole concept of a romantic comedy turns me off, but I decided give this one a shot since Joseph Gordon Levitt was in it and he was looking reaaaal good in Mysterious Skin. One of the scenes I liked best is when they were in the department store messing around with the furniture. Seemed like a boss time. After a while I started to despise Zooey's character and I felt really bad for Joseph who is just this really awkward dude. All in all, it's a happy ending type movie, but not entirely predictable. Really well written.

Sherlock Holmes.

The banter was witty and very funny. The plot was kind of slow and the action was nothing I haven't seen before, but I think it was worth watching for the chemistry between Holmes and Watson alone. That part was highly entertaining.

First time, actually. I've only seen Princess Mononoke, Kiki's Delivery Service, Spirited Away, Ponyo, and Totoro so far. I think I'll either watch Castle of Cagliostro or Whisper of the Heart next.

The Cat Returns and Laputa are also great.

Saw Daybreakers. Interesting story, but gratuitously gorey.

Where The Wild Things Are.

I had high expectations and they were surpassed! I loved this movie through and through (apart from the school scene which really irked me), best one I've seen in a long time.

Avatar 3D : I didnt care for it, the only thing good about the movie was the graphics, soundtrack wasnt inspiring, plot was cliche, weak justification for the mass murder of so many humans. Also couldnt suspend my disbeleif in some areas, mainly the part where a digital image is "scaled up and enhanced" and one part where some normal photographs were shown in 3D as well as near the end where the Jake Sully and Neytiri 's hands are the same size 2/5

Sherlock Homes : loved it good acting, good action, brilliant soundtrack, rather predictable but it still kept me interested 4/5

I saw Daybreakers last night.

The first half was pretty awesome. It had a really cool aesthetic and vibe and was doing some reasonably interesting things. Unfortunately the second half degraded and instead of a very obvious, satisfying ending they went for an extremely cliched one which whilst 'happier' was just less satisfying.

Also they could have done a lot better with less action and more thinking and arguing. I sort of get the feeling that they wanted something a bit more cerebral but it just didn't pan out for whatever reason. Even so it's reasonably fun and worth seeing. Ethan Hawke and Willem Dafoe both give pretty good performances and are both pretty pleasing to the eye, so that's okay then. :love:

Oh and they completely avoided any (SPOILER):bou::bou::bou::bou:ty love/romance bollocks! Which was nice.

I totally wanted to live in the vampire city they portrayed in the beginning of the movie. I thought it was sweet and I sympathised with them. XD

For a moment there I actually thought they were going to just chuck one in there, (SPOILER)when they're in the surveillance room during the climax, just for the halibut. Pleasantly surprised that they didn't.

Incredible, riveting, smurfing intense. It's one of the best movies I've seen all year, one of the most uniquely crafted films I've ever seen, and one of the most profoundly uncomfortable movie watching experiences I've ever had. It's not a film you see to have a good time. I finished watching it and my whole body felt rigid and exhausted. I'm not sure I would ever watch this film again, but that doesn't take away from the fact that it's an amazing film and the only film that I know of that shows the brutality of war, without any sort of political agenda.

Death to Smoochy, one of my all time favorite bad movies. The premise is kiddie shows are really hotbeds of corruption, lust and murder. It's so bad that its wildly entertaining. I guess it's because the acting is over the top yet the characters themselves are generally likable. Except Robin Williams' Rainbow Randolph, who is so insufferable that when gansters rough him up, you cheer on the gangsters. My favorite character is Tommy Cotter, the matriarch of the gangsters who effortly mixes steely ruthlessness with mother hen instincts.

Paranormal Activity: 3/5
For the type of movie it was (POV) it wasn't too bad, dialogue was a bit lengthy at times, and since when did a movie based on a true story have an alternate ending? o.o

District 9: 5/5
Alien movies aren't really my thing but this was amazing. Awesome graphics and concept. Plot was well done and the action was incredible. Five stars all around.

The Hurt Locker

It was alright. I wasn't crazy about the documentary style filmmaking. I understand they probably chose to do the hand-held look to make this seem more raw and real, but I felt it was a distraction from everything else that was going on. I also noticed some really bizarre editing mistakes that are just huge no no's. Like they would cut to something and then repeat the cut and some how expect no one to notice that it's the exact same action repeated again in the exact same shot. The plot I wasn't crazy about either. After a while I grew bored of them disarming bombs. They pretty much kill off anyone in the film who was interesting. This film fails in comparison to other war films like Apocalypse Now, Tigerland and Fullmetal Jacket.

Brotherhood of the Wolf.

French film, with plenty of action, and twists that aren't super obvious unless you smoke crack. 8/10

Lovely Bones. The screenplay was a complete mess.

^ I just watched this as well. It was very disturbing to me. I have not read the book, but according to IMDb the screenwriters pretty much butchered the entire plot by not making it detailed enough. Personally, I liked the fact that it's more subtle than the novel. I don't need to see her being chopped up to know that's what happened. I got that when I saw the bag and the safe. I think people who actually wanted to visually see this captured in detail are entirely to desensitized to this stuff and that's disturbing as well. They also don't understand that movies are for interpretation and books are for detail. If a book was to be made into a movie with all it's details it would be ridiculously long. Anywayz, it had beautiful musical score and the "in between" scenes were breathtaking. (SPOILER)Although it was very unsatisfying that no one ever found her body.

The thing that really annoyed me with this film is the narration. The constant droning of the main character throughout was a cop out to me. It's like saying, oh hey I'm going to just read some excerpts from the book or script because I don't feel like shooting some extra shots to move the story along. It didn't help that her voice was just incredibly bad for narration altogether though her acting was pretty good. So was Stanely Tucci's. Creepy as hell. The acting by all the main cast was good -- surprisingly even Mark Wahlberg was good even though he did some of the worse acting I have ever seen in The Happening.

There was also some scatterbrain scenes of Susan Sarandon's character rearing away from the plot of the story, but then it came back again. The editing was also on par. There were cuts from one shape to one shape. In particular, I liked the cut from the lighthouse on the beach to the cut to the miniature sized lighthouse in the bottle. All in all, this film definitely left a lasting impression.

As much as I didn't want to see the process of her rape/ murder, apparently the gruesome details are what made the book more (for lack of a better term) developed in terms of characters and overall plot. You felt like you were in her shoes, you felt her hatred (And I'm not saying that the film doesn't portray this well, it does, I'm just going by what my friend, who has read the book, said.).

Avatar. I don't know what everyone was complaining about. It's obviously not an original plot but it's obviously not supposed to be either. The world-building was superb and I liked the political allegory about nature and war. 8.5/10 easily, maybe even 9.

Inglourious basterds

It's Tarantino, and it's good

20th Anniversery Mystery Science Theater 3000 box set. Four enjoyably cheesy movies:

Werewolf: Like Skinwalkers, it exploits Navajo mythology for horror effect, but in this case winds up looking silly. One of the hammiest villains and most wooden of leading ladies.

Laserblast: Was that Mark Hamill? Unhappy teen stumbles upon an alien weapon and gets a chance at revenge on everyone who picked on him.

First Spaceship on Venus: Spiritual precurser to movies like Mission to Mars and Red Planet, but more pretentious. International crew fly in a rocket ship to Venus to look for signs of life with some of the goofiest equipment you've seen outside Looney Tunes.

Future War: Low budget rip off of the Terminator that throws in animatronic dinosaurs for good measure.

The Book of Eli.
Dont watch it, its the dullest movie I have seen in a long time.
If you want a plot thats 1000x better, play Fallout 3.

Pan's Labyrinth. It took me long enough, but I finally watched it last night. It's pretty freaking sweet and deserves the accolades.

Caught Sherlock Holmes and I was impressed. Holmes reminded me too much of a magician, and I didn't know if I'd like Jude Law as Dr Watson, but I loved it.

Don't get me wrong, I knew going in that Avatar's plot was going to be pretty blah just from seeing the trailers (god damn Hollywood and Americans, we have the worst trailers ever, cause we have to have everything explained to us before we'll actually watch a movie :mad2:) so I wasn't really surprised by that, of anything nothing about the film was surprising and the fact that people around me claim its the "best movie ever" spiel is making me feel that I once again missed the memo that told me that everyone needs to lower their standards of what constitutes as good.

With that said, I'll try to check out your film recommendation as it sounds like something up my alley.

Watched Avatar.

As most said, the plot was nothing new nor surprising. I was waiting for them to paint with all the colours of the wind to be honest. That aside, the movie itself was gorgeous. Pandora's plant life was simply amazing.

The movie made me want to run through the woods naked after watching it.

Pan's Labyrinth, too. I could rave on about how beautiful and fantastic it is, but last night when I was tipsy I said something that was actually really accurate:

I think Pan's Labyrinth has the mood that Tim Burton tries to go for nowadays, and fails every single time to achieve (Except for Big Fish.)

The Lovely Bones is sugar-coated. Too...whimsical at times. And funny.

I might be the only person on earth who disliked The Lovely Bones, the novel. Beyond the first scene, which scared me into attention, I thought it was pretty bad. The movie looks even worse.

I think people who actually wanted to visually see this captured in detail are entirely to desensitized to this stuff and that's disturbing as well.

Yeah, I think it's because Jackson wanted to focus more on the emotional result of her being murdered rather than the actual act.

I didn't get that he raped her. I think that part could have been more clear. He certainly had the intention to when he said, "You should take off your clothes." D: Plus, you gotta figure the actress is really young. It would be awkward to have a scene like that in the film (SPOILER)though they did do it for a film called, Hounddog.

Pan's Labyrinth is one of the best films I've ever seen. Those who praised it have good taste. District 9 was awesome as well.

I watched the first hour of Caprica. So far it's smurfing confusing. Hopefully it gets clearer soon, but apart from that I'm enjoying it; obviously nothing like BSG though (which I still need to finish watching). However I'm probably going to see Avatar again tomorrow with the rest of my family.

Food, Inc.

Not just a great documentary, but an important one. Everyone and their Mom should watch Food, Inc. And also The Corporation, another really great documentary that tackles some similar issues.

For a movie on such a grim subject, it's suprisingly goofy. I didn't find it offensive, although it is theologically unsound. Even the title refers to demonic, not angelic possession.

This is the second time in the last few months that Dennis Quaid has been slumming in a bad horror movie (last time was Pandorum). As it stands the most interesting character is the one handed cook, Percy.

I've really been meaning to see Pan's Labrynth. It looked awesome, and I hear nothing but good things. :(

Anyway, just got back from seeing Sherlock Holmes, which I originally didn't want to see due to Hollywoods habit of ruining such things, and the fact the trailers looked like it was getting turned into an action movie. Thank god I was wrong.

The movie was absolutely stunning. Great acting, and dialogue that was both witty and funny. You see a lot more to Holmes then his mind and deduction skills, but it also shows you some of his less savory tendencies. Theres a couple things that are a bit too easy to piece together yourself, but on a whole there are some amazingly cleaver crimes that had me boggled until the end of the movie.

In short, I absolutely love this movie.

It's quite simply a modern fairy tale. If you look at the Brothers Grimm stories the way they were originally written, they were this gruesome and scary.

As has been pointed out, Del Toro simply inverted the morality and made the humans the most monsterous and the monsters the most human. His sympathies have always been with the monsters if you look at his other films like Hellboy or Kronos.

Although he has stated that (SPOILER)the most shocking parts happen early on, I have to say the scene where (SPOILER)one character takes a sip of a drink is the most cringe-inducting for me. :eek:

3/5 for the film, 11/10 for Carey Mulligan's performance. I was utterly captivated by it. It wasn't the most dramatic performance or the most thrilling or funny, she just simply lit up the screen in a way I've rarely seen before. She was magnetic. It was like watching Audrey Hepburn reborn.

I watched a movie on Comcasts On Demand last night; Dead End.
Older film, 90's or late 80's I think, and wasnt half bad if you concentrated on the dialogue. It really went downhill after (SPOILER)the smart-ass brother died because he was the best character imho. The ending sucked, the 'resolution' didn't make sense at ALL. So i'll give it a 3/10.

Not a bad movie, and shouting out 'You just got Willem Dafown'd' got a few laughs...

But I find that when humans seem to have supernatural sneaky powers when put up against vampires.. I just have to groan a bit.

My favorite thing about Pan's Labyrinth is that I don't know whether to feel terribly sad at the end or happy for Pan. Leaving an event up to a reading or viewer's imagination can bother me sometimes, but I always love when the interpretation of mood is left entirely for your decision.

Shlup sent to it me and I've not gotten around to sitting down and seeing it yet (same with Precious, it's sitting in my torrent folder waiting for some love.) I really love A Nightmare Before Christmas - I don't know anyone who disliked it. But every movie since that one (with the exception of Big Fish - I'll explain), has been really poor and vapid, because it's just him trying to rebottle the NBC glory, and it's just not working and it never will. I almost had to stop watching Sweeny Todd, it was such a poor work. I am so tired of seeing previews of movies with fake gloom, tired creepiness, and the butthumping of Johhny Depp. Isn't Johnny Depp tired of playing the same unimaginative characters? I thought he had more depth to him.

I watched an older movie a few months ago that had Johnny Depp - I had entirely forgotten that I even liked him as an actor until I saw it. It was called Chocolat and he was this pirate in an little french village. It was cool and I liked how he had a much more subtle way of acting in it. It wasn't the best movie, but I rather liked it, and I liked his role in it.

And coming back to it; I absolutely love Big Fish, it is one of my favorite movies. I think it is one of the most touching movies and it never fails to make me cry. It has such a big heart, like Amelie. It has his style of quirkiness, but it has warmth, originality, and an actual soul to it. The day Tim Burton stops trying to every single character in his movies ever another Jack Skellington is the day I'll see a movie of his again. I'm hoping that his talent and potential won't be wasted anymore.

EDIT: Whoa, I didn't mean that to sound so srs business. Sorry if that sounded crazy or anything. I just get really passionate about this because Tim Burton has this potential to make really beautiful movies like Big Fish, and he squanders it and it makes me grrrrrr!!! :kaoangry:

I concur with Rye about the Big F and the Pan's Lab connection. However, I think many of Tim Burton's movies were good. He's definitely an acquired taste, but I'd be hard pressed to find anyone who says Edward Scissorhands wasn't a good movie. I'm also fond of the Pewee movie he made. :shiny:

Anybody who likes Pan's Labyrinth should check out The Devil's Backbone. It is also written and directed by Guillermo del Toro. He once called them siblings in some interview, if I remember right. He said Backbone is his masculine "boy" film and Pan's is his feminine "girl" film. The Devil's Backbone isn't as good as Pan's Labyrinth, but it is magic realism too and still a really good film.

The last movie I watched was a Swedish movie called Patrik 1,5. It was sort of cute but really predictable, so 3/5 (lolscores).

La Vie en rose

2/5 for the movie, 9/10 for Marion Cotillard's performance. I have such a girl crush on Marion, I just think she's such a beautiful woman. But yeah, she completely disappeared in her role. She was unrecognizable sometimes. I didn't actually like the movie so much but Marion was lovely.

I watched that movie recently too! Yeah, it's pretty good, but I just love that girl so much that I'd watch anything she made. She's in a movie called Jeux D'enfant, and I really enjoy her in it. Try it! I think she's also in A Very Long Engagement, though a small role in it. She and Audrey Tautou are my favorite french actresses.

@Shiny - Oh, Edward Scissorhands is brilliant! I was more referring to his more uber-commercial Hot Topic humping sort of movies, like his new version of Willy Wonka, Sweeny Tod, The Corpse Bride, etc, etc.

I actually think Big Fish and Pan's Labyrinth are kind of similar in some ways. But yeah, Big Fish is unquestionably the best Burton film I've seen. I'm looking forward to Alice though.

I have The Devil's Backbone in my unwatched DVD pile. I really should remedy that given how much I loved Pan's Labyrinth.

Make the Yuletide Gay - A romantic comedy set during the holiday season (no :bou::bou::bou::bou:, eh?) that deals with what happens when the boyfriend suddenly arrives at the doorstep for the holidays and you're in the closet. It made laugh and left me with a feel-good feeling at the end. I guess why I liked this movie so much is that I can relate with Gunn's worries about coming out of the closet as well as Nate's parents' total "don't ask, don't tell" policy towards his sexuality. Oh, and there's a lot of sexual innuendos that are the large part of the humour. Such as in one scene where Nate enters the kitchen in the early morning while Gunn is out jogging with his dad. Gunn's mom's back is turned to Nate and she says she "Getting my beaver ready for Christmas", Nate's reaction is total shock followed by a confused "Excuse me?" In response she turns around holding what appears to be a stuffed beaver. It made me laugh. That and the whole play on bunkbeds and sexual positions. lol.

7/10 Not an amazing movie but one I really enjoyed. :)

BTW Pan's Labyrinth is totally amazing.

I watched Yuletide Gay today too :O The two leads were pretty bad actors and the jokes referring to sex that weren't actually sexual became old really fast, but a few of them did hit home. It was a cute movie, I guess, in that feel-good way, and it's nice to see a teh ghey movie that isn't all about taking clothes off hot people and sex montages at least. The parents were totally sadistic considering the ending if you really think about it, though. What a warp. I'll go 3/5

My parents and I watched Silence of the Lambs last night. I reaaaaaaally enjoyed it, even though it had some disgusting parts (and some of those weren't even the flesh eating parts).

The only thing that kept me from really really loving it was jodie foster's accent.

I just watched Sunshine, by Danny Boyle.

This movie did quite well when it came out but not THAT well. Its rated highly by most critics, but not too high.

Well I have to say this is probably now one of my favourite movies ever. If you need a movie to have a break in tension, then this probably isnt for you, but I just loved it. Im a sucker for movies that start of slow and just keep building tension from there with a very steady pace.
I found this film so eerie it brought goosebumps under my skin. Its not exactly a 'scary' film, well it IS scary but I would compare it to Silent Hill's (the game) disturbance factor rather than shock value.
The cinematography and soundtrack in this are so good I kept getting cold shivers throughout.
I think some people were put off by the (SPOILER)'God' aspect of the film, but I suggest not looking too much into that or trying to figure out what the filmmakers were intending to convey. I suggest to just make up your own mind about it and enjoy the incredible scenes this film has!

Also despite that it is apparently impossible for the sun to be infected with a Q-ball and a few other tidbits, you can still tell the enormous amount of research gone into physics and space they have done.

Amazing film! I dont care if other people found that last act stupid, I dont. I certainly found it better than Slumdog Millionaire.

The Shining.

This was actually the first time I'd ever seen it, so of course I had twenty years of pop culture references guiding me through it.

(SPOILER)Yet, nothing had prepared me for the wonderful relief of Wendy and Danny surviving!

Where to begin. Well, this film is about rape and revenge. It stars Rosario Dawson -- one of the only people I actually recognize in this film aside from people she's worked with on Rent. At first she's an intellectual who calls Jared, the other main character on his b.s. Jared is basically a dude who stalks and her, hits on her, and then rapes her. Don't worry, I'm not spoiling anything cuz the trailer reveals what he does. It shows Rosario's descent after that. She becomes hollow, solemn and goes on a journey to seek revenge. You can physically see her changes as well as how she responds to her environment.

With Jared, you see that he is extremely insecure and mocked by his fellow football players which is why seducing and dominating women appeals to him. I think the film did a good job at developing major characters, but a horrible job with editing. I watched the edited rated R version. The original was NC-17 and I'm told that it was much better than the piece of crap I watched. The editing for the version I saw was absurd. It would stay on shots too long. A person would be talking and you wouldn't see them so you'd rarely know wtf was going on. All in all, I would've probably liked the film more if it had been the original NC-17 version.

Just watched Coraline last night. Might fine film, I wish they made more children's movies like this cause it really felt like a modern day Grimm's Fairy Tale. The film is eerie and creepy throughout and funny enough I sometimes found the real world of Coraline to be just as disturbing as the fantasy one she visits. Overall, visuals were great, cast was fun, and the music was really good. :cool:

Really great film that was slightly hampered by my expectations going in. I wasn't aware it was going to be a character piece. I will have to watch it again and will probably enjoy it a lot more. It really is good, I just wasn't in the mood at the time.

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

I'm not even very sure how I feel about it. It certainly wasn't a bad film, but I wouldn't say it was very good either. In any case, I did enjoy it.

Ong Bak 2

Note that this is not the other Tony Jaa film made straight after Ong Bak which had come to be casually known as Ong Bak 2 as it's actual name is Tom Yum Goong/The Protector/Warrior King.

I'm not sure if they used the same choreographer as the previous two films for this one, but the fighting style is notably different. Perhaps it is a reflection of the different setting of the film (in imperial Thailand as opposed to modern times) and that's why a lot more of the fighting is with weapons. But the fact that so little of the fighting contains Muay Thai is a bit of a let down because, in my opinion, that's what Tony Jaa does best. The fight's aren't bad though; Jaa is definitely proficient and believable with a katana, three sectioned staff, scimitars and everything else he picks up. He evens gives the drunken fist style a bit of a tribute.

I've jumped straight into reviewing the fighting because that's all this film is. Jaa has absolutely no dialgoue until about an hour into the film when he says something like "Release the slaves!" and it doesn't really pick up after that. And about three-quarters into the film, you look down at the remaining time showing on the bar and you realise that not even Jaa could fight fast enough to end the film. And so the film ends in a cliffhanger and you're made to wait for Ong Bak 3, in which, according to it's Wiki article "Tien's [Jaa's character's] legs and arms will be damaged by torture and require Jaa's character to fight with some sort of boneless action". Doesn't sound like a return to the hardcore elbowing and kneeing action from Ong Bak and Tom Yum Goong. In fact, it sounds a little lame.

The only reason to watch these movies is for the fight scenes. And the one's in this film don't compare to those of Jaa's previous Thai blockbusters, but they're enjoyable enough.

Raging Phoenix. JeJaa is amazing, and the parts where she's kicking ass are awesome. The other guys were okay, but I watch JeJaa Yanin movies to see JaJaa Yanin. Boring melodramatic plot with the worst possible setting for the last act. Not as good as Chocolate, but Chocolate didn't have a scene with JeJaa wrapped in nothing but plastic wrap, so there's that.

She needs to get better writers because she deserves it.

I saw When In Rome with my girlfriend the other day. Predictable, but cute. I have a huge crush on Kristen Bell.

Gamer. Not as good as I thought it would be. Felt like they were going for a "Hey, check out this trippy movie. We'll confuse them 'til the end..." but I was still confused at the end, mostly because the plot is all over the place. It had some really great action scenes though. If you want to watch an action movie where a guy gets his family back from a terrorist I'd recommend Commando over Gamer.

I must say I was surprised, it's actually a rather good film. At first it seems like it's just another run and dun action movie with the saner agent and the crazy one, but they are both rather likable characters, and the plot actually gets a couple good twists in by the end, so the story is solid as well. SOme really nice action scenes too, even if it goes the 'bad guys can't shoot' direction a few times. :p

Overall, 8/10.

An Education

5/10. Probably doesn't even deserve that. It was contrived and lead up to absolutely nothing. The whole time I thought something sinister was going to happen, and nothing did. It was ridiculous.

On the other hand, Carey Mulligan is Audrey Tautou with Audrey Hepburn's spirit breathed in. The resemblance is actually a mix of both actresses, but you can see Hepburn just living in her through the acting. It was an absolutely pleasure hearing her speak and watching her move. Best new actress by miles.

Either way, it didn't fit. The movie should have been made to be better for Mulligan, or they should have gotten an average actress for such a bland movie.

Also props to Dr Octopus' acting - never seen a Dad's role actually be played quite so well.

I just watched An Education with Rye and my assessment is pretty much the same. They had two absolutely stellar actors - Mulligan and Molina - and a host of passable to rather good ones, and they did absolutely nothing with them at all. We both felt that something very weird or sinister was going on, the atmosphere certainly indicated it, but it was utterly prosaic and banal.

I do hope that Carey Mulligan stars in a lot more though, because she is absolutely delightful and I barely cared that the movie wasn't much cop. As Rye just said to me, we have no idea what it was actually trying to say.

Yeah, I think the problem is, is that it just didn't have a message. At all. I mean, what was that movie trying to say? I honestly don't get it. It could be (SPOILER)STAY IN SCHOOL! or (SPOILER)FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS SCHOOL IS 4 SQUARES just as easily as the other, and both are tenuous at best. I'm not even that critical of movies; I'm generally pretty easily pleased. But that just bothered me!

Also: I wish I had the magical ability to go from looking ten years old to a gorgeous European socialite by putting my hair up and trimming my bangs. Seriously! I dunno how she did it.

I saw this as well and I thought it was creepy too. I only expect that from Henry Selick. I thought the stop-motion animation was fantastic and not choppy in the least. The story was okay for what it was. I didn't read the novel, but it had a decent plot. Some of the characters were a bit too odd looking for my taste. All in all, decent film with a fitting musical score.

Condorman.

This may require some explanation. I was watching Spoony's review of Captain America and my childhood memory was jogged to some farce involving a nerdy comic book artist getting mixed up in international espionage and actually trying to become one of his fictional superheros. Except his dumb luck is amazing and he gets a budget to build his super vehicles.

It's light and silly, but it held up better than I thought, except for some of the costumes. One wonders whether the CIA would really fund this nut all for one defecting spy, it seems way too much trouble. That's the main problem with the movie, its too much trouble for any of this to happen.

I was surprised to see Michael Crawford in this, right before Phantom of the Opera, but this role has more in common with A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.

I wanted his Mach 5 ripoff car. :D

I saw the Bourne Identity for the first time finally... Good movie, but it kinda' rips off an idea I had for a book... Although I'm sure the idea has been used before...

Sherlock Holmes.

Very rad movie. It was pretty interesting to see Holmes and Watson brawling, but not really a stretch. The chemistry between the two characters was amazing, each of their interactions with each other were great to watch. I think the main cast all did stellar jobs as well.

Just saw Sherlock Holmes this past weekend and really enjoyed the movie, I love the banter and whimsical humor of the whole film. Excellent music that really fit well with the film.

Last night I watched one of my favorite films of all time, Grosse Point Blank. I am Martin Blank in my head, and this film has some great dialogue and wickedly dark humor as well as a sweet 80's soundtrack. John Cusack is one of my favorite underrated actors. For those who don't know, GPB is a film about a hitman who goes back to his ten year high school reunion. That's the initial premise but its pretty damn funny and amusing.

Ponyo.

One of the most delightful movies I've seen in a long time. It is unbelievably endearing, and an absolute pleasure to watch. The plot seemed a bit schizo (I suspect something was either cut, or was lost in translation) but it didn't matter because every scene was both beautiful and endearing, or hilarious, or all three.

Very beautifully presented, and in some cases quite quirky. I would honestly believe it is dealing with some themes that's far ahead of it's time in the main stream of film. It has a lot of influence from out of body experiences, other realities (e.g. the astral plane), and lucid dreaming. It's quite a remarkable and interesting experience, worth a watch and if you are interested in any of the topics I mentioned above it just may hit close to your heart.

This was a great movie, imo. The atmosphere was very engaging, and you really felt so empathetic towards all characters including the robot. It had a twist that didn't have an "Oh!" moment, but rather something that ticks in your head throughout. A must see!

Beyond The Valley of the Dolls- An old 1970 film about a group of three women becoming rock stars and how they deal with fame, sex, lesbianism, drugs, love, and acohol. Usually old movies have slow pacing. This one didn't but overall it wasn't that good of a movie. I kept my attention, but there wasn't anything that was really interesting, clever, cool, or emotional.

This movie also has one of the weirdest and distateful endings ever. One part includes a man dressed in a cape and purple tights, kneeled over a sleeping naked woman and sticks a gun in her mouth. When she wakes up and screams when she sees in front of her, he pulls the trigger.

Ugh, yuk 5/10.

It's even creepier if you know about Sharon Tate.

Saw Wolf Man. Suprisingly faithful to the original. Very much a Victorian morality tale, although gorier. Nicely moody and atmospheric. At times it seeemed to pay tribute to an American Werewolf in London.

In a strange way, you can consider yourself lucky. You saw the movie more or less as intended, without the extra layer of knowledge about the fate of one of the actors. It's like blithely going to see the Dark Knight without knowing anything about Heath Ledger.

Yeah this movie was weird. I watched it when I was like 13 and only 'cause there was boobs in it. Although I did find it interesting to see that's where the bit before Smoke Two Joints came from.

I got around to seeing Coraline at my sisters.

First I'll say, while the 3D was good, it wasn't particularly spectacular. I don't really understand why people went on about the 3D in this movie. It was little more then an interesting addition, though I wouldn't have paid more extra for it for any reason. And the spider Web scene? No where near as awesome as many claimed.

That being said, this is an amazing movie. The animation and graphics are solid, and the actual designs of characters and world are gorgeous, and down right creepy when they need to be. Any credit this movie deserves graphic wise doesn't go to the 3D effects, but the actually environments and animations themselves.

The story was dark for a kids movie, and manages to remain gripping since the beggining with a great plot and wonderful characters.

Fantastic movie. Jim Carrey plays a really good role in this one. I loved the ending.

Shutter Island. This is a good movie that is a victim of a bad ad campaign. The trailer makes it look like a spooky atmospheric horror movie when in fact it's a very serious psychological study. The visuals are well done and forboding but it's more about the interiors of the mind than externals. I wasn't prepared for that so the movie caught me off guard.

If you really want to see a spooky atmospheric horror films set in a mental hospital, rent Session 9, which was filmed in a real abandoned mental hospital, which gives a whole level of dread that a movie filmed on a set would lack.

Ninja Assassin.

The title lead me to believe it would be completely corny and boring, but it's actually a pretty solid movie. It won't be winning any positive awards anytime soon (or ever), but it was enjoyable and entertaining to watch. It gets cornier towards the ending, but that really doesn't bother me all that much. I'd probably recommend it to anyone who has some time to kill and doesn't mind watching over-the-top violent movies.

Shutter Island

Just a mesh of random weird crap that totally makes the move incredibly predictable. If you've seen "Identity" with Kevin Cusack then you've seen a much simpler version of Shutter Island.

Waking Life

This movie is done in that live action style (like A Scanner Darkly) and is about a guy who falls asleep but then whenever he wakes up, he's waking up in a dream and he doesn't know how to stop it. Basically the guy goes around and talks to the dream people and has these REALLY DEEP philosophical conversations with them. Watch this if you're into that sort of stuff. Also some weed or something would totally make you enjoy this movie more.

B&W sucks and only works for noir films.

I watched what-cha-ma-call-it. Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. It had some funny parts, but I got bored in others. I think it had scene that had the most uses of the f word out of any scene in the history of comedic films. But yeah, tbh, I think the only really good Steve Martin movie is The Jerk. Anything else is pretty crap.

Legion. It was an interesting movie. Reminded me a lot of The Terminator though. Hopefully the sequel will pull away from that.

The Book of Eli. smurfing awesome. I recommend this movie. It was badass. It wasn't action packed but the story was like Fallout meets the bible.

I saw Red River. The cast did a fine job portraying their characters but John Wayne and Montgomery Clift were easily the best of the bunch. The relationship between them was very touching and it was heartbreaking and awesome to see John Wayne turn into an antagonist halfway through after some clever plot twists. Cinematography was superb with clever camera angles and magnificent vista and group shots among other things. The plot itself was quite enjoyable although the ending was too abrupt to my liking. Dimitri Tiomkin's score was rousing with its great themes and fine use of choir and orchestra among other things. The film is definitely worth a watch if you enjoy westerns and an intriguing storyline with a fine cast.

It was also presented in 3D in theaters (the kind with the over-sized glasses) which I think is what he's referring to. Although his use of the term graphics later in that post is somewhat confusing, I still don't get the impression that he actually thought it was CG.

I saw One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest for the third time. Its a very funny, serious and sad film all at the same time. Classic film that many have seen but if you havent I would easily recommend it.

Maybe I'm bias because of my dislike for Non-Ocean's Eleven Clooney, but I just really don't like the way he acts in the majority of his recent movies. It was still a pretty good movie, though I think that has something to do with Jason Reitman's involvement rather than Clooney's.

I've been meaning to watch Precious. I wanted to read the book, but I can't stomach ebonics, even if it's purposeful. Supposed to be a really powerful movie, I've heard.

Watched Coco Before Chanel. Fairly OK movie, but only because of Audrey Tautou being the best actress of this generation. It did have some very lovely cinematography.

Cemetery Man - It started off very charming, began to get disturbing, and ended up wtf?

I liked it overall, though

I watched Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen out of sheer boredom yesterday. Let me say one thing about Michael Bay:

He can't direct himself out of a wet paper bag.

Seriously, one of the worst movies I have ever see. The plot was completely incomprehensible, the acting was atrocious and the fight scenes weren't even choreographed halfway decent. The movie I watched several years back about the girl whose vagina swallowed people whole (pre-Teeth was better than this piece of trash and it was completely D-List.

FInally saw Inglorious Bastards, and I must say it was an incredible movie. Acting was top notch, story flowed nicely, and many times I found myself laughing aloud.

Definately one of the best Movies I'd seen in a while.

Alice, Wonderland, Mad Hatters, Tim Burton and talking animals you say?
Wonderful movie, 10 out of 10 imho. Burton's best work, excluding Nightmare Before X-mas, it was great. Entertaining for kids and adults and an amazing subtext message. I highly suggest that you guys see it.

Star Trek

Admittedly, I'm not big on Sci-Fi movies and especially not big on the Star Trek series, but I did enjoy this. It was a bit cheesy to me at first, but then it got boss. Like many people have said before me, they picked a perfect person to play Spock and I was pleased with Leonard Nimoy's cameo appearance.

I think Karl Urban as Bones was the best casting I've ever seen.

Up in the Air - George Clooney plays George Clooney in, what I thought was a very well-crafted script with realistic dialogue and situations. I didn't think I'd like it at first, but I came away from it satisfied. 8.5/10

The Hurt Locker - Man the tenseness in the movie is almost too much to take at times. Unfortunately I felt little to no attachment to any of the characters, and found myself not really caring what happened to them in the long run. Well crafted movie overall, but, in my estimation, nothing too memorable. 7.5/10

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou - Pretty good Wes Anderson film, a little weirder than his usual stories but the witty dialogue is there and this film more than others was very touching. Really one of those interesting stories about the twilight of a legends career. Bill Murray was fun as usual and Owen Wilson finally showed he can actually act like someone that isn't himself! Awesome music of course.

Alice in Wonderland - I liked this film, but then again, I'm a Tim Burton fan so its difficult for him to disappoint. I feel the movie works cause its not a re-telling and Wonderland really works with Burton's quirky style. I really felt the March Hare and Red Queen steal the show. In regards to Depp doing Hatter, I felt it was definetly over-hyped. He wasn't bad or anything but it does get annoying he keeps getting top billing despite clearly being in a supporting role. His Hatter is amusing but I feel he's not really better than any of the other performers in this film.

Finally watched Donnie Darko. I was very annoyed the first time around, but then enjoyed all of the foreshadowing the second time around.

Dead Snow: a movie from some northern European country about Nazi zombies. Yes, you read that correctly.

This scene pretty much says how the movie is: so one of the main characters gets bitten on his forearm in a fight with one of the Nazi zombies. After they (him and his friend) finish off that group of zombies he, thinking he will at some point become a zombie due to the bite, CUTS OFF HIS OWN ARM WITH A CHAINSAW AND CAUTERIZES THE WOUND BY SHOVING HIS STUMP INTO A FIRE HOLY :bou::bou::bou::bou:. Then immediately after that a hidden Nazi zombie jumps partway out of the snow right in front of him and bites him in the crotch.

Final rating: 194574302057/10

I was looking at that Dead Snow movie on On Demand and it explained the synopsis. After just reading it I was like, "What the hell."
