Alleyway Jack/Gilgamesh is the only thing I can think of that fits, but you already said no.
It's very obscure
It's not found at Ipsan's Castle, Madain Sari, Quan's Dwelling, Daguerro,Treno, the Ice Cavern, Burmecia, Gargen Roo or Fossil Roo, or any inhabited city.
It's a recurring element in most Final Fantasies, but it's utterly different in FF9, and apparently whatever they changed, it was for the worse.
I'm going to assume now that "brothers" doesn't refer to brothers in the game but all of the other iterations of this thing in other FFs.
What are some common recurring elements in FF that are in FF9 too:
Chocobos, Moogles, Gilgamesh, Cid, classes, crystals, Gaia, Malboros, Ahriman, Cactuar, Tonberries, Biggs and Wedge, summons (Ramuh, Bahamut, Alexander, Odin, etc)
I don't know of anything in FF9 that's done so differently in FF9 that it doesn't yet harken back to one of the other FFs which was the theme and purpose of FF9.
Double post, sue me. Ribbon. It doesn't grant immunity to status effects like in other FFs.
Grasping at straws here.
Not the Ribbon, either. I'm starting to think maybe my riddle is a little too obscure...
I'll give another hint, then. Start thinking books.
Wishing Upon a Star
Tantarian.
Book of Matoya (spelling?) would be obscure if you don't check the Key Items...... But I think every one does - some might not get the reference either.
None of those three.
Ah, is it located in the Alexandria Castle library?
Nope. Remember - not in any of the inhabited cities.
Drat. Uh, riddle repost with a list of hints, please.
Eh, it was last page for me so
I tell you what I can,
Nothing more than that.
I am nothing like my brothers,
not a single little bit.
My partner is gone -
he's moved on for good.
Now you must consult others,
to know what I should
be able to tell you,
but I could say no more.
A failed experiment,
an incomplete archive of lore.
What am I?

It's a book.
Is it a book in FF9 that references other artifacts of information in other FF games, or one referencing people, places etc. in other FF games? Or were there once multiple books about something, but in FF9 there is only one?
I'm trying to figure out what the brothers are, haha.
Maybe other books? I'm trying to think of a book that is different from the others.
The part: "My partner is gone - he's moved on for good" has got to mean something.
EDIT: Isn't it the Strategy Guide? That Key Item you get after beating Ozma, that would fit a little.
Is it something outside the game, like the FF9 Ultimania or something? I know very little about them, so I have no idea how it would fit, but it sounds like it could be something like it. xD
Edit: Or what Gamblet said!
Strategy Guide seems to be correct.
Most of us, Americans at most, bought the real strategy guide and found it very bad - by trying not to spoil they made a change that made it worse.
Wasn't there like some sort of difference in names with one of the guides? Like they were all Ultimanias and then there was an Omega guide or something.
If he hadn't specifically said it's a book, I'd say Playonline. Before SE turned it into a portal for FFXI it was their first attempt at an online strategy guide for FFIX.
Though Gamblet doesn't have the right one, I will say he is correct, because he said strategy guide. It is the one from a real store, not the one in the game.
I tell you what I can,
Nothing more than that.
Obvious, it's a book and can't say anything other than what's in its pages.
I am nothing like my brothers,
not a single little bit.
This strategy guide doesn't really tell you a whole lot in the way of specifics - at all - unlike the strategy guides for other Final Fantasies.
My partner is gone -
he's moved on for good.
The "partner" was the PlayOnline code system, but with FFXI, the entire system was scrapped, and hasn't come back since.
Now you must consult others,

To get what really should have been in the strategy guide, you need to look online now at like GameFAQs or something like that.
A failed experiment,
an incomplete archive of lore.
This type of guide really sucked and was a horrible attempt at getting us online, and the last line, of course, refers to how incomplete it is.
So, did I win? :D
...riddle gets an F-
I think you did! Good job!
I think I'll think of a riddle tomorrow then, its midnight and I should get some sleep.
Oooh.... I did guess the reasoning though... in my last post on this thread.
That was a pretty decent riddle. Good job.
Shaped like a feline,
but not alive.
Faces south,
even looks like as if it was fending.
Home to frogs,
but not humans.
Covered with sand,
a footing for a lady.
What am I?
Something about the entrance to Fossil Roo in one of the Qu's Marshes?
Question: Are we looking for an equipable item?
It is not an entrance to Fossil Roo and it is not equipable.
Hm.... An item of any sort?
Nope.
Sorry for double post, but I guess that it is hint time.
Hint: It is related to Stiltzkin in some way.
Hm....
is it one of the marshes?
Home to frogs must reference the Qu's Marshes. Being covered in sand makes me think of Cleyra.
I think "covered in sand" refers to the Desert Palace (where you can control someone other then Zidane).....
All incorrect, but it is related to a marsh in a small way.
Hint: Think bigger.
could it possibly be the entire southern continent?
I'm still clueless, lol.
As a side note, Gamblet, that gif in your signature... It gives me nightmares, lol.
No, I can't. I'm not even sure we're on the same page as to what the southern continent refers to exactly since in the game the mist continent and forgotten continent could both be considered southern.
Actually, I wasn't trying to solve the riddle, I was asking the other players that question, because I wasn't sure myself.
My guess would be the forgotten continent's qu marsh that's on an island in the archipelago to the south. The island is shaped like a cat and faces south, there's a qu's marsh on it, and um, the lady's footing...maybe a landing place for the Hilda Garde? No clue if any of that's true.
This is open if someone wants to jump in and give us a riddle.
Oh... That was a cleaver one.
Uh, I could take the riddle, if anyone wants me to.
Go for it :D
Okay.
There are four of us.
Only one place to find us.
Much we do not offer.
Place us in this to receive a gift.
What are we?
What are our colors?
What is the gift?
I'm looking forward to it.
EDIT: Oh, you are that precise? :D Well, I'll have to start guessing then.
EDIT2: Wow, this is simple.
What are we? - The coloured stones you find at Conde Petie Mountain Path.
What are our colours? - Blue, Red, Yellow, Green.
What is the gift? - A Moonstone.
am i rite?
That's correct.
This one should be easy:
I'm tiny and futile.
But if you carry a specific pebble,
I become beneficial.
I live underground,
sing me a melody.
Descending from the skies,
I'll spray you over with dust.
Who am I?
carbuncle
Correct!
Your turn.
Yay!
let me think...
half a spider
half a hero
half a ten
half an adult
half a road with half skill
who or what am I?
Got it in one let me explain
half a spider: 4 arms
half a hero: a middling rank hunter
half a ten: appears in ff 5
half an adult: he appears in ff9, which is half of 18
half a road with half a skill: alleyway-jack
That was a pretty damn nice riddle actually.
really? Thanks. I was kind of hoping it would take longer to solve it.
But oh well...
I'm a fish,
but I float in air.
Colored like the sea,
somebody is targeting me.
Who or what am I?
Invincible
I'm going to guess the blue colored Chocobo.... Not sure why.
Not a chocobo. :D
Whale Zombie
A whale is a fish? Okay, seems correct.
leviathin
My bad......
Not Leviathan. Need a hint?
sure
Hint: Whale Zombie's neighbour, kind of.
I would say that means the enemy in question is either fought alongside Whale Zombie or can be found on the same continent.
The green squid creature that shoots ink at you?
Not a Green Squid. And Jiro, you are heading in the right direction.
The Vepal?
Nope.
Feather Circle?
Close enough.
Green Feather Circle, the friendly monster is the right answer. I started wondering why it has "green" in its name. It looks kind of blueish.
Anyway, your turn. :D
Stealing this spot.
Fearsome growls
Not of beasts
Awaiting service
In a room of feasts
Does anyone know the Japanese name of "Green Feather Circle"?
As for Jiro's riddle, I'm going to guess that the answer has something to do with Quina.......
The relation to Quina is so minute and anecdotal that following that train of thought would more than likely lead you astray!
Is it alive?
the book that attacks you?
Gamblet - yes, it is alive!
It's not the book that attacks you though!
Not of beasts - human growls?
Awaiting service in a room of feasts - the only thing I can think of is somebody's stomach gurgling in a dining room.
There's not much to go on for this one
Mullenkedheim?
i got nothing
That was a good riddle, Jiro. Kind of humorous too.
I'll think of a riddle when I get home tonight, before I go pick up FFXIII-2.
Thanks Gamblet! You better give us a riddle before you start playing FFXIII-2, FFIX Choco Boy. If you leave us in the lurch... :argh:
Keep your panties on Jiro.
From the beginning, straight to the end,
I'll be useful, you'll depend
On me for your survival,
to help you beat your rival.
But unless you verse a single,
I don't change for your tingle
To learn all you can learn,
But trust me, you're not who I spurn.
What am I?
My guess is some sort of weapon, likely a [thief's] Dagger.
gil?
Neither.
I'm guessing its's the summons (all of them, not one in specific, so if it is a specific on just say no, I want to figure it out)
My original thought is Trance despite it not really fitting most of the lines!
AP?
Depression Moon has it, AP!
From the beginning, straight to the end, - monsters in all parts give AP
I'll be useful, you'll depend
On me for your survival, - you need AP to learn better healing skills
to help you beat your rival. - and better damage skills
But unless you verse a single, - A "single" refers to a boss, which you only verse a single time
I don't change for your tingle - most mobs give just 1 AP, while bosses give more typically
To learn all you can learn,
But trust me, you're not who I spurn. - It rhymed.
You're up, DM!
Makes perfect sense now that I know the answer :monster:
Cool I got it.
I'll be back with one in a few.
Death brought you here
On the way you found more of it
I thought you were the cause of it
Do not confuse me with him
I'm a real warrior
But him and I are not totally different
We have one thing in common
We both saw death
I hope this one isn't as hard as the last one.
Looking for "I", "him", or "we"?
If you want we, then I'll guess the obvious: Zidane and Kuja.
I'm going to guess Vivi and Black Waltz(es?).
Neither.
To Choco Boy you're looking for I, but him or I will give you the right answer.
Hmm... Lani?
Nope.
Soulcage?
Nah ah. One more guess and I'll give a hint.
Freya
No, but the answer does deal with a Burmecian.
I can only think of 6 Burmecians in the entire game other than Freya, and 2 of them are nameless rat kids. I'm pretty sure all the rest are Cleyran. So, I'll guess that one Burmecian guard who's trying to save his family? I think his name is like Bob, or Bill.
Just gonna say Fratley
May guess is going to be that statute that Freya picks up a weapon from..... Not to sure if I'm on the right track.
Kal?
Prince Puck?
No to everyone.
King of Burmecia
Aside from Puck, Fratley, Freya, and the King, I can't think of any other Burmecians or even Cleyrans other than the random NPCs. It isn't a random NPC, is it?
There is Burmecian Soldier Dan whose entire family is slaughtered if you're bad at directions in Cleyra. He also dies a horrible death too as I recall. There is also the Burmecian Soldier whose name I forget, maybe it was Bill, who ends up in Lindblum with a half dozen kids. These aren't guesses, I'm just listing Burmecians.
Nope to Setzer and Cloud, but since Jiro said he wasn't guessing, I'll see if the next person can get it.
DAN! That's the name I was trying to think of! Dan. My guess is Dan.
Yep.
I probably gave too big of a hint by saying a Burmecian. If Gamblet didn't say Freya my hint was going to be that the character is in the game, but at the same time isn't.Quote:
Death brought you here (referring to the dying soldier that arrives at Lindblum. Here referring to Burmecia)
On the way you found more of it (many dead burmecians in Gizamaluke's Grotto)
I thought you were the cause of it (When you first encounter Dan he accuses you and Vivi of the murder of his people)
Do not confuse me with him (Him referring to Dan from Street Fighter)
I'm a real warrior (FF Dan is a soldier. SF Dan is a joke)
But him and I are not totally different
We have one thing in common
We both saw death (Last few lines referring to both of them dying. FF Dan died in Cleyra. SF Dan was murdered by Kazuya.)
I got nothin. Open round.
I was going to make it rhyme but I'm a bit too drunk. So I'm going to just give the clues in plain ol' English. Hopefully it's not too easy.
You can encounter me early in the game, but I'll probably beat the living trout out of you until the middle of Disc 3 or so.
If you do somehow manage to beat me, I might even drop a card with my own picture on it.
These bells are driving me insane.
What am I?
Grand Dragon?
Good to see my ideas were close! :D
Yup. Your turn again Choco Boy.
That one was way too easy Cloud.
That's why we don't make riddles when we're drunk, lol.
Quell that incessant rumbling!
Make me something I will like,
bring it quickly, I'm your queen!
Now clarify yourself, creature.
What are you in truth?
I know not how to reward you.
With these Earrings? Or these gloves?
Or can you even wear either?
Who are you?
"Quell that incessant rumbling!" - At Alexandria, when Bahamut is summoned, Alexander is summoned to make things "quiet" again.
"Make me something I will like,
bring it quickly, I'm your queen!" - Beatrix? Bringing those stones to Brahne. OR It may refer to eidolons.
"Now clarify yourself, creature.
What are you in truth?" - Alexander is a "creature", and it isn't quite clear what he/it really is.
"I know not how to reward you.
With these Earrings? Or these gloves?
Or can you even wear either?" - I guess the character must be male or has no gender.
So I am going to guess Alexander.
Not Alexander.
I am somewhat reminded of that book enemy that you face in Alexandria but there is not enough in the way of clues to actually explain why.
I'm thinking this relates to a side mission, but I can't recall one where a glove or any armlets were given.
Not Tantarian.
Quina? When he was the head chef at the castle?
Quina it is!
Quell that incessant rumbling! - S/he's always hungry.
Make me something I will like,
bring it quickly, I'm your queen! - S/he was head cook in Alexandria.
Now clarify yourself, creature.
What are you in truth? - We never really learn what a Qu is.
I know not how to reward you.
With these Earrings? Or these gloves? - Coral Earrings can only be worn by women. There's a pair of gloves in the game where the description says it is for swordsMEN. Refers to that we never learn if it's a he or she.
Or can you even wear either?
You're up, CS.
Open round. I'm drunk again.
Festival of the Hunt.
Or Lindblum.
I guess the same as the above two.
Nope.
Treno? It kinda has a castle, and that's where the card tournament is and the auction house where you get the Coral Earrings.
EDIT: It's also where you meet Amarant.
I'm just tossing this out there: Amarant Coral? Or Salamander Coral... same guy.
Guess again guys.
Alexandria?
It has a castle, it's where you get your first cards and learn to play (and meeting that "Alleyway Jack" fellow :p), and...
Uh...
Something to do with coral.
Nah ah.
In what direction are we heading with "coral"?
the final dungeon.
Hey that's not a bad guess actually.
You got it!
Castle referring to the area in Memoria where it replayed Bahamut's attack on Alexandria castle.
Cards referring to the hidden master card players found throughout the dungeon
Coral referring to the area where Quina thought she was underwater and almost drowned. Hades can also be found in that area.
Yay!
I'm good at guessing your riddles for some reason.
What I get when I mess with hooters
What I get when I mess with weird plants
What I get for messing with tentacles
What I get for messing with explosives
I had an idea of what it was, but my mind went blank as soon as I read "tentacles." This is not a good sign.
Is there more than one answer to this riddle?
yes
What is it your looking for? General term? Or something else?
it has four specific answers
What I get when I mess with hooters Black Mage Village
What I get when I mess with weird plants Mist
What I get for messing with tentacles Ink
What I get for messing with explosives Death
0/4 correct
They're status effects.
is that a guess?
because that definitely is not 4 guesses.
That's me telling everyone else who is less lazy that the lines refer to status effects but I cannot be assed looking them all up and pinpointing them :greenie:
Attempting the only one I actually have a proper idea about...
What I get when I mess with weird plants - Sleep?
"hooters" probably refers to an enemy that is owl like.
no at the guess.
@Jiro It might, there is more than one definition of hooters.
I can't think of an enemy that is breast like :p
Hooters - That weird duck guy you see in Alexandria and Treno who blows his horn at you? :D
0/4 correct
Hint:
All of the answers have something to do with battle.
Are they status effects, like Jiro said?
If so, the one about tentacles - Ochu/poison? Or maybe Malboro/Bad Breath?
they are not status effects
I assume Ochu and Malboro are also incorrect, then. :p
the one about tentacles is neither ochu nor malboro.
Repost the riddle, please. And the hints so far.
Is it blue magic? What you get when Quina eats enemies that match the descriptions?
Hooters = White Wind
Explosives = Mustard Bomb
Tentacles = Bad Breath
And... Weird Plant Omega Attack Five Thousand. Totally a legit move.
2/4 correct.
I can technically give you 3/4
Oh snap. xD
Uh... Let's see... Plant thing...
1,000 Needles?
no
Hang in there SwordFox, you're almost there!
Gah, bugger. xD
Limit Glove? If not then I'm pretty much stumped.
no.
Can't we just say that 3 out of 4 means I won? :P
I said technically 3/4. you actually only got 2/4 perfect. Go for all 4.
I'm stumped. :(
Yeah I think we need some more hints xD
tentacles has nothing to do with malboro
Hooters? That implies owl. You can't get anything from an owl... you can from the gryffin which is in the BM forest? If that's what you are implying.
Unless it implies tits and there really aren't any monsters quina can eat that have those....
yes and no.
How can it be yes and no? xD
Are the other two blue magic abilities like the two I got right?
yes
Well I'm still stumped.
This is hurting my brain.
