Minecraft got 3 votes, eh? Anyway, as I said, massive AAA bias. Not that Skyrim isn't a good game, but that's pretty amazing. I'd give it an 8/10 (a real 8/10, not a game review 8/10).
While I enjoy Minecraft and would not dispute its position were it on this list, on a personal level there are a lot of recent indie games which I enjoyed more.
Awesomenauts
Binding of Issac
Frozen Synapse
FTL
Game Dev Tycoon
Kerbal Space Program
Monaco
Waking Mars
to name a few off the top of my head which I enjoyed more than Minecraft.
Too bad that someone with such normally good taste could like Frozen Synapse so much. I hated that game.
Well, to tell the truth I didn't put as much time into Frozen Synapse as I did into the other titles on my list so its position there is kind of tenuous, but I did enjoy it.
I'm shocked that Minecraft is out.
Skyrim was pretty dang awesome though.
The War Z has totally got this, hands down.
I can't remember if I nominated this or not. Too lazy to go back and look.
When Skyrim came out it was insane, I think it swept a lot of awards that year. But a year or two later, the big phrase I hear about it is "as wide as an ocean and as deep as a puddle." I have 33 hours on it so far and I can't really call it either way. I only got it a few months ago and I've had a lot of other games to play, especially now with new consoles. Morrowind and Oblivion hooked me much deeper but I can't say whether it was because I just had less to play at the time. But when I first started the game, it was really insane to see how far the series had come.
I primarily nominated it over Oblivion because I figured it was the one in the series that everyone would vote for. I did the same for Call of Duty 4 but apparently it didn't make it on here?
Wasn't a AAA bias that kept me from voting for it. I haven't actually played it, and games like it usually bore the crap out of me anyway so I really have no interest in going out of my way to play it. If I want to build stuff with blocks I'll break out my damn Lego.
It isn't bias from any individual member, it is a somewhat unavoidable collective bias based on the method of selection.
Minecraft is like Lego except much cheaper and all your friends can do it with you and you never run out of pieces and it doesn't take up your entire room and the Lego plays with you, too. I'm not saying you should play it (you may very well find it boring) but I don't like the analogy much.
I could say "if I liked running and jumping, I'd pull out my track shoes" but that would obviously be silly.
That would be silly since running and jumping in the real world isn't really the same thing, while playing with blocks in a game like Minecraft is almost exactly the same thing, just with infinite pieces and less variety in the pieces. I won't deny some people have made some really cool stuff in Minecraft, but I have no interest in putting any effort into that sort of game. The only reason Lego even interests me is for the tactile aspect of taking the pieces and building something I can physically interact with. If I wanted to build stuff in a game I'd probably take up 3D modeling or building levels in games I like. Minecraft just doesn't have much appeal to me.
Oh, I forgot that you can also delve into the Lego world and explore it in the game.
Honestly, Minecraft wasn't something I saw the appeal in until I finally caved and tried it out.
And so we have it, Eyes on. The number one game from this generation as voted by you.
What game could have beaten out all the previous?

Uncharted 2 swept nearly every Game of the Year award in 2009. Personally, I was sceptical that a Western action game could really be that good, but it was. From the opening museum heist in Istanbul, to the final escape from the collapsing ruins of Shangri-La, the game was filled with heart-pounding moments from start to finish. It complemented its breath-taking cinematics with unprecedented interactivity, with some players failing its gameplay segments because they didn't expect to still have control of Drake. Not only was the game gorgeous to look at it, it also had some of the most fluid and satisfying combat in an action game to date.
Uncharted 2 improved on the formula of the first game, and unlike the third game, was paced just right, and didn't jar the player with too many transitions to other parts of the world.
With its superb polish, endearing cast, and unforgettable set pieces, Uncharted 2 is not just emblematic of the seventh generation, it was also a major turning point, when Sony slimmed down the PlayStation 3, cut its price, and released a classic that all gamers could rally around. Naughty Dog started something great, and it resulted in the quintessential action game of the generation.
And there we have it folks, the number one game. Happy? Think another game was cheated out of the title (well, except from Mirror's Edge, we all know that one was forgotten)?
When I get back from my team dinner out, I'll post up a full list of all the games nominated for you all. :)
Woohoo! :D Happy enough with that.
Never played so I'm indifferent.
Only thing that bugs me about the list is Final Fantasy XIII being mentioned in the same breath as Mass Effect 2.
Never played any Unchartered game, truth be told. However it is a damn shame Minecraft didn't do better, as one of the people who voted for it!
I was the only one who voted for Assassin's Creed: Revelations? :roll2
Interesting list. Super pleased to see Valkyria Chronicles there. What an ace game.
I'm not surprised it's on the list, it was a very popular game. I didn't really enjoy the Uncharted games much, but obviously you guys thought it was terrific.
I nominated all top 3 games! I gotta say, guys, I feel vindicated!
I don't know if I would say Uncharted 2 is the best game of the generation but obviously its a game that a lot of people agree is amazing and that's how you win on a vote like this. Only thing I would add to the write up is that the multiplayer and coop were crazy fun.
Yeah, I agree. Possibly the most underrated multiplayer ever. I don't get why there aren't more online multiplayer PvP shooters where you can hang from ledges, climb random walls, do stealth kills to those above/below you, etc. A very 3D experience compared to the likes of Halo 3.
Uncharted 2 multiplayer is fun. Does it still exist, or is the multiplayer only done through Uncharted 3 now? I guess it doesn't matter for me as I lent my copy of Uncharted 2 to a friend 2 or 3 years ago and I doubt I'll see it again.
I expected to see this game on top, but it isn't the top game of the generation for me. It's definitely a fun and well crafted experience for what it is - the video game equivalent of a fun summer action flick. That's not to say it doesn't deserve the praise it gets; it just isn't the top game for me personally. I did kind of hope something else would get the top game spot just to surprise me though.
I think it's important to remember that all 208 games nominated are "Top Games" (except Resident Evil 6, what is the deal with that ;) ), these ones just got the most nominations which is quite a feat, tbh! For 10/48 members to nominate a single game out of the thousands that have been released over the past 8 years is something to celebrate.
Ten nominations or one nomination, each of the games that have been mentioned have made an impact on someone in this forum, and if I had the time and the patience for it, I would have went the whole hog and made sure each of them got a spot in the limelight. Sadly, I don't on both parts and this is what you all get. xD
We should just be happy that there have been so many great games released recently(ish). :D
Especially Mirror's Edge.
(Wow this was more lame than what I had originally started out saying)
Mirror's Edge: Top Game of Every Generation.
I can't comment on Resident Evil 6, but I'm sure whoever voted for that should be ashamed of themselves. Pretty much all the games mentioned were great, and I look forward to possibly someday checking out some of the games mentioned that I have yet to play.
As promised, all the nominated games. In alphabetical order.

I'm glad to see Candies on there.
Shauna, I just wanted to thank you for running this whole event. It was fun and I enjoyed all the bantering in the thread :)
Indeed Pike. We should do this for other generations down the line. Because there can never be enough debate on this forum. :exdee:
EoFF's Top Games of the Past: Pong Consoles.
EoFF's Top Games of the Past: Tiger Electronic Games.
The options are endless.
Not a problem! I enjoyed running it! I will see if I can improve the formula for when I do something like this again. Maybe going back through the generations. I am especially looking forward to Console Generation One! I know what my favourite games would be! :excited:
I have to thank everyone who put forward games! Without that this would have been a disaster. Shame on you if you didn't nominate. ;) But yeah, this event was pretty much nothing without the lot of you.
Horray for Uncharted 2 and Shauna!
Hooray for Shauna indeed!
Yeah, this thread was awesome fun. Thanks to you, Shauna!
Only one other person voted for Bioshock: Infinite? That makes me sad.
Oh well, it was a really fun thread to read through except every one of spuuky and vivi22's posts. Thanks Shauna ^.^
I would have voted Bioshock Infinite, but I hadn't played it yet by the time I sent in my votes. I think I bought and played through that game just a couple of days after I voted, haha.
Also, thanks a lot Shauna! This was fun!
That was fun. I have not tried hardly any of them, but it gives me a list to start working through. Thanks Shauna!
...
Yeah, you've got a point there.
I just noticed that someone nominated Gunpoint.
Whoever you are: I like you.
Gunpoint is a spectacular game.
I realize this is a Final Fantasy forum but how the hell did XIII get so many votes while other, better JRPGs weren't even nominated once?
Like Star Ocean 4.
Because SO4 isn't even good. For god's sake, Enchanted Arms is a better 7th generation JRPG than SO4.
I don't think SO4 belongs on this list and I say that as someone who likes SO4 a lot. xD
Enchanted Arms was not better though good God man.
I thought Enchanted Arms was pretty interesting! That being said, I managed to play a whole hour of it before the disc crapped out and refused to load past a certain point. Great quality there. :shobon:
Who's talking about Enchanted Arms? I was talking about FFXIII and Star Ocean 4 is definitely better than that. Infinitely better environments and dungeons, better soundtrack, better database (the Dictionary >>>>>>>> Datalog for explaining plot info) and overall I hated no one in the SO4 party as much as I hated Lightning.
Oh and oen more thing. The game is actually FUN. By Orphan's Cradle I never wanted to play FFXIII or its cursed sequels again whereas the Palace of Creation and its awesome final dungeon theme both made me feel like I had actually done something worthwhile by playing the game.
Well I just had enough faith in this board to think FFXIII wouldn't get six votes for being one of the best games of the generation.
More votes than NieR or Tales or Xenoblade and I thought people here loved those games.
If we were doing a thread for the best Games of the 5th Generation, would FFVIII outrank Xenogears?
Six votes and tied with Mass Effect 2, Grand Theft Auto 5, one vote below Demon's Souls and two votes above Crisis Core.
Well played, XIII fans. Well played.
I don't think I nominated it but now I wish I did
Nier was seriously terrible, one of the worst things I have had the displeasure of playing (look at all these differing opinions! Games that I don't agree with got nominated. Oh well. xP). Both Tales of Xillia and Vesperia got 4 nominations each. Xenoblade made the list. The difference between a place on the Top 20 and not was one nomination. The rankings were differing by one nomination. More nominations to make a bigger gap would have been nice, but we got what we got. :p
Again, SO4 didn't make it because neither you nor anyone else nominated it. Simple as, you can only blame yourself for it not showing up at all. :}
Nier is unpolished greatness :colbert: Also, it definitely would have been one of the first off of my list of nominations had I just procrastinated my list and wrote it a few days later.
Nier was... addictive. I was compelled to play, not that I was enjoying it all that much. :3
I can understand why people wouldn't like it. Sort of. I just love that if you enjoy the game, playing it a second time actually expands and changes the story quite a bit just because (SPOILER) you can now understand the shades and hear what they are saying and thinking. It makes you feel like a terrible person. I also love the music.
So far the only games I recognize mentioned for the last couple of posts was Enchanted Arms. I have that for the Xbox 360, played a bit and then I quit for some reason...
I can see why people like Nier too! It just wasn't my cup of tea. xD I found it fairly dull, and although some things were pretty interesting, it just wasn't enough. Also the music was painfully repetitive at times. I did complete it to 100%, so I got... something out of it. Love-hate relationship.
I did really like Kaine as a character too! Although, she had dumb clothes, stupid corset-butt.
I hate Kaine's clothes. I know they "explain" it sort of it, but it's still stupid. I'll give you that the music can be repetitive too. I still like it a lot. I didn't complete the game to 100% though. I played through it twice and then watched the 2 endings I didn't get yet online. I probably would have hated it if I tried to do 100% since the sidequests are painfully dull after a while. Also fishing sucks in that game and I refused to do that anymore than I have to.
