Most of the characters in this game have interesting stories to tell but none quite as tragic as the story Barret is about to tell of his past. This is the moment that defined Barret as a character and has made him one of my favorites out of the bunch.
Ben, seriously, this is really heartbreaking. I think I love each piece of yours more and more. There are so many different sides to this artist. That's amazing.
Now I'm starting to wish I'd contributed more.

Encore une fois, un moment tragique du jeu. Le chef du village de Corel se fait tué par des soldats Shinra tandis qu'il tentait d'alerter Barret et Dyne de la tragédie qui se passe au village.
Ce moment est également un moment clé, car il permet de comprendre un peu mieux l'histoire de Barret et ce qui lui vaut d'éprouver une telle haine envers la Shinra.
Dans le jeu l'angle de vue de cette scène est derrière Barret et Dyne; dans mon dessin j'ai volontairement inversé cet angle et ai donc placé la camera de l'autre côté afin que l'on puisse voir Barret et Dyne de face, mais surtout afin de montrer le village en flamme derrière eux. Je trouvais que cela rendais la scène encore plus intense qu'elle ne l'est déjà.

And yeah, I'm always up for another DA project. I just, uh, need a notable time to recover afterwards... so... we'll see. xD If someone replied declining the invitation to the project, I would tend to ask them what different project ideas they might be interested in future. Let's just say I have a lot of ideas. I got replies from about one in three people that I contacted. About a third that replied declined. About a quarter of those that signed up didn't get to the stage of completing any artwork (in many of those cases, they didn't contact me after seeing the list, so I couldn't assign them anything). All in all I probably contacted about 400-600 artists, though, yeah. I'd hazard a guess that I've received about 1,500 notes for this project and sent over 2,000.

Barret et Dyne se tiennent en joue.
J'affectionne ce moment assez sombre du jeu car Barret se retrouve confronté à son passé.
Il doit affronter son vieil ami Dyne qui à disparu après l'incendie de Corel. Malgré ses tentatives Barret ne réussit pas à raisonner Dyne. S'engage alors un combat entre les deux hommes.
J'aime également cette scène car c'est l'un des rares un contre un que l'on a à négocier dans le jeu, il fallait donc se battre différemment que lorsque l'on était trois, cela rajoutait de la difficulté surtout que Dyne est assez coriace.
J'aurais aimé que Dyne retrouve la raison et qu'il rejoigne Avalanche; j'ai toujours pensé qu'il aurait été un bon allié.

This scene was one of my favourite scenes. To be honest, I didn't even like Barret's character that much until this area of the game. Dyne added so much character development to Barret. He stopped being a bad Mr. T clone - that being said I did name him Mr. T on my first play through, and started to become a fleshed out character with meaning behind his attitude.

At this point, I was just casually moving through the story. Then we have this cute moment with the Turks before Cloud and the others have to fight them. Another point where the Turks have escaped the black and whiteness of being antagonists and have turned out to be quite an entertaining bunch.
I never quite got why the Turks randomly developed crushes on AVALANCHE :lol:

I wanted to draw this piece because Zack's parents never received any closure on what happened to their son who was brutally murdered after escaping from Hojo's lab. Seeing someone who must have known him recently probably brought his parents some closure and some happiness. Even though Aeris never verbally answered their questions, her hesitation and emotional reaction must have been enough for them. Aeris struggled with her feelings, trying to look like they didn't bother her when she ran outside and shrugged it off -- saying how Zack could have been talking about any number of girls and not her. This was a rare, vulnerable moment for Aeris in the game when we are so used to seeing her being spunky and mischievous and flirty.
Wonderful work! If only I knew this DrAssenov so I could compliment them personally. Alas...

Cosmo Canyon har alltid haft en varm plats i mitt hjärta. Jag har ett starkt minne när jag var yngre, där jag oändligt utforskade i bilen i kanjonerna och när jag plötsligt hittade platsen i mitten av ingenstans. Jag föreställde mig att karaktärerna var trötta av den långa resan och därmed symboliserar Cosmo Canyon för mig en känsla av hopp och värme.

Dang, this thread advanced a few pages while I was messing around trying to sign up. I know it's a ways back now, but I wanted to give props to Tony Tran for the North Corel scene, the detail and colors in the sky and smoke really focus your attention on the scene of destruction, with the darker foreground framing it and Barret's despairing pose adding to the somber atmosphere. Also loving the composition and lighting in his motorbike game pic, really gives the feel of action.
All the pieces are fantastic, it's great to see so many different art styles and interpretations of these memorable scenes! Kudos to everyone involved for their hard work and dedication; I'm really enjoying all of these as they go up! :D
You should all know this one!

When I remember this moment in the game, it was sort of like a break for our Avalanche group. Their buggy breaks down and they kind of get this relief and they all get a brief moment to think about their lives and how it's taken a sudden turn. It was a very beautiful moment.
Pff, I like Elena's disapproving face in the background when the Turks are talking about their crushes. :P
DrAssenov, loving the angle and perspective in your picture of Zack's parents, the way the characters appear larger closer to the foreground gives it a sense of depth and I'm really enjoying the different reactions you gave everyone with their expressions and body language; the soft lighting from the window and the way Tifa's body is in shadow adds a lot of dramatic contrast! I thought the scene was quite bittersweet as well.
And wow, stunning background on the Cosmo Canyon piece, the strong blues and reds bring out the atmosphere of the place very well, with the silhouetted foreground framing it nicely. Really like all the detail in the cliff and the small lights burning in the houses, brings back memories of one of my favorite areas; I still love that music.
Any moment that involves sitting around the campfire with friends is very beautiful! :jess: I kind to want to make some s'mores right now. XD

The Cosmo canyon scenes and Bugenhagens observatory video and lesson was indeed quite deep and beautifully done. It had very deep impact on me. I remember having chills running down my spine when that music started and Bugen began to tell the story about the planet. :)

It's been so long that I can't remember my initial reaction to this scene — was it confusion? skepticism? upset? — and yet returning to it all these years later feels like checking up on an old friend. This is one of the first points in the story where Cloud is more earnest than cocksure, where we start to see the conflict between who he is and who he wants to be. And, at the heart of it, this is when I was able to start relating to him the most.

The moment is famous! And really impressive. I always used Vincent in my party after he has joined.
I felt bad for Cloud during Nibelheim. It made him appear to be such a liar to his team. I still wonder how much the "townspeople" had been paid to live there like that. Permanent acting career anyone?
About that picture, I like the utter confusion on both Cloud and Tifa's faces.

Waahtis, I like how many details of Cosmo Canyon you managed to get in, that place sure had a lot of little rooms to get lost in--I like the touches of blue shading in the ground, and the motion of Nanaki running up the stairs. The way you drew Bugenhagen's head large against the whole multicolored cosmic projection in the background really gives the sense of the enormity of the discussion!
Very peaceful scene around the campfire, I like how Cait Sith is silhouetted against the bright glow of the fire.
Fantastic work on the image of Nanaki howling!! It's one of my favorite scenes and I'm loving the silhouettes of the rock walls against the sky and the hazy glows around the moon and Nanaki's flaming tail. The bright red glow around Nanaki draws attention to him and the silhouette of his father against the moon is just as dramatic as it should be, while the party members in the foreground are shadowed so as not to distract from the scene, but there's still an amazing amount of care and detail put into their poses and expressions. I'm particularly loving that their proportions are just the way I always imagined the characters because of their blocky onscreen models.

I'm only on page 15 at the moment, but I just had to comment. This is just so fantastic, and such a fitting way to celebrate the birthday of the forum. I honestly don't think there is a single piece I haven't liked.

The angle in the Cloud and Tifa image gives it a dramatic sense; I'm impressed with the very clean and careful lineart, it must have taken a lot of care to put in all those fine lines for the details. Definitely a pivotal moment in Cloud's character development and in how we begin to understand the story.
Very impressive shading and detail in the Vincent image! I really like the eerie blue light illuminating the bricks from one side of the screen; the dim light and texture on the bricks and coffin really gives the sense of a dank, mysterious atmosphere.
Remember those two pics that were both drawn of Sephiroth as he smashed up a monster pod in the Kalm flashback?

Funny thing when I looked at Cid, I always thought that he could be my father because we both had blonde hair and blue eyes. Only difference we have are smoking habits and drinking. I never smoke and I drink coffee while Cid do smoke and drinks tea. XD

Final Fantasy VII is known for some random instances, but this scene had to be the most random one in the game. Palmer is a weird, porky little guy. The whole party was in Cid's backyard when the truck won the boss fight. I wonder were the truck came from...

Holy flip that Rocket Town. I'll think of something to say when I've picked my jaw up off the floor, I can't imagine how much time and effort all that detail must have taken. Captures the place perfectly, all that texture on everything is fantastic and the rocket as the centerpiece looks just like I remember it. Really like all the added touches of life like the birds on the roofs and the bright green, blue and red palette.

Ahaha the truck scene, I always got confused after the battle when it's nowhere to be seen in the yard. The simple, geometric style really suits the humorous aspect of the moment, I like how round and squat Palmer looks as he's sent flying.

After being backed into a corner, our heroes find themselves making an escape by plane with the help of a new ally, Cid. A teaser scene of sorts, your new "toy" the Tiny Bronco is instantly shot down by Shinra and ends up crashing at sea. This could have possibly been avoided if someone was piloting from the actual cockpit ;)

The expression on Yuffie's face is awesome. I got SO MAD when she did this to me in the game. I totally freaked and really wished I had an alternate save file O_O I was barely a high enough level to handle the monsters on those islands...

Ich war totall schockiert als ich feststellen musste, dass all meine Materia gestohlen wurde. Yuffie hinterher zu jagen hatte dann natürlich oberste Priorität, dennoch war es auch eine interessante und lustige Erfahrung ganz plotzlich ohne Materia kämpfen zu müssen. Ich fand es amüsant Yuffie letztendlich in einen rießigen Topf zu finden, da dieser Versteck nicht besonders schlau schien für einen Ninja.

This is a cool idea for an anniversary. Just want to express my appreciation on all who contributed on this. This sort of reminds me of a series of videos I watched that delves deep into covering FFVII and some of the expansions of that universe. I was totally shocked when I realized that all my Materia was stolen. I had to chase after Yuffie, of course, then the highest priority, but it was to have to fight an interesting and fun experience all of a sudden without materiality. I found it amusing to find Yuffie ultimately in a rießigen cup since it did not seem very clever hiding place for a ninja.

Very nice angle on the escaping Tiny Bronco, the shadowed characters and motion of the bullets give it a sense of drama and action!
Really liking the graphic style of the scene where the plane touches down in the water, I really like the attitude in each character's silhouette pose and the motion implied by the angle of the plane and the sweeping wave beneath it!
Amazing detail work in the scene with Yuffie, I like the texture on her armor and the glint in her eye, and the limited color palette makes it stand out!

When given the choice which one of them is the worst, I don't know which one is! XD By the way, how in the heck did Corneo managed to hostage up these poor girls on a facial mountain? By his "magic touch" maybe? No, wait, don't tell me. I really don't want to know. At least the hostages were saved by Cloud & Company and the Turks. That's all I needed to know in life.

J'ai toujours aimé toute l'aventure à Wutai, car pleine de situations cocasses,je trouvais qu'elle permettait en quelque sorte de faire une pause dans l’intrigue principale du jeu.
Yuffie est un de mes personnage préféré, et la découverte de sa ville natale a été un plaisir,tout comme l’ascension de la pagode avec comme seul combattant notre ninja préférée.
Le combat en question est dans mes souvenirs un moment assez difficile car il y a quatre boss à vaincre à la suite en un contre un. Mais bien récompensé par l'obtention de la dernière limite de Yuffie.

I always loved the whole adventure in Wutai, as full of funny situations, I found it somehow allowed to take a break in the main plot of the game.
Yuffie is one of my favorite characters, and the discovery of her hometown was a pleasure, as the ascent of the pagoda with the only fighter our favorite ninja.
The fight in question is in my memory quite a difficult time because there are four bosses to defeat in a row in one against one. But rewarded by the last limit of Yuffie.

I was initially so annoyed with Yuffie for stealing my materia that I refused to use her for most of the game afterwards, until I needed her morphing skills. :P Her sidequest and the history of Wutai were very interesting, though, and the pagoda battles got me to enjoy using her more. Her personality and background were an interesting contrast to everyone else's, making her an unlikely but refreshing ally.
The Pagoda's always amused me. I liked seeing their transformations. Great work!

Date night anyone? While on my first play through of this game, I never had the luxury to know how to achieve which wonderful lady to take date, but out of some luck I ended up with dear old Aries and I was happy. She tickled my fancy when I first started and I was very happy for the outcome. As I was playing, this particular part of the game always makes me smile. I don't know what it is really, but the connection these two lovable dorks have is something I always look forward to and enjoy playing. Even now as I repeat the game play on my own over and over again, it always leaves me in a happy and cheerful mood. This scene and small chapter of the game is one I can never forget.

Cait Sith! Okay....so, I admit, I actually used Cait Sith in my party a lot! My brother walked in on me playing this game (he'd actually played it and beaten it before I had)---and laughed at me, horrendously, for using Cait Sith. I'm still scarred by this. ;(

Despite pretty much focing Cloud to take her on a date and dragging him around Gold Saucer, I think Tifa didn't really hope for Cloud to kiss her when the play asked for that. I tried to portray her suprise and pleasure when Cloud actually goes down on his knee and kisses her hand - and I tried to portray Cloud's "oh, well, I might as well do it right" attitude.
Please tell me there's art of this.

pfff black orb that's perfect. I like the overly cheerful colorful banner at the top next to the dark shadows in the actual pic, as well as the graffiti in the gondola. Cloud's grim shoulder hunch is great.
Also Jessica's work of Aerith and Cloud at the play is lovely, I really like the detail you put into the strands of hair and clothing folds, and that you included the blue sky in the stage scenery! That play was so much fun to mess around with, haha.
Also I like the poses in the Cloti one, with Tifa looking a little uncertain. And the Cloud/Yuffie is really cute!

Final Fantasy VII was the game that got me into gaming, for the game play and the story along with it! I loved the little Easter eggs you'd find if you had a certain character on your team at this moment. Like in this section having Aerith here allowed you to find out more on Tseng's relationship with her. This was the part where I realized Tseng wasn't such a bad guy after all.
I always felt Advent Children was a retcon. I like Tseng but he should've died there!
The way Chrislea draws Cait Sith is adorable. I like that the picture includes the whole background with the flashing lights, and that Barret's expression shows his reaction to the betrayal.
I'm amazed Tseng was still functioning properly after that wound. Great work!

I've always liked the murals on the wall in the last room of the Temple itself, and so have tried to create something in a similar style. The entire area is very atmospheric and the upbeat but slightly creepy music reminded me a lot of some of the weirder dungeons in the older Final Fantasy games. And hey, every ancient temple needs mysteriously active dragons and demon walls, right?

Eclesis: If there was ever one gesture Sephiroth ever used to crack me up, it was the one that's being portrayed in this image. I used to laugh when Sephiroth would give a monologue about how he would destroy the planet and then throw his hands up in the air like he'd just won the super bowl. Cait Sith is my favorite character, so I immediately decided to illustrate this scene! Sacrifice for his friends, is the true definition of a hero, and here Cait Sith is more heroic! I was delighted to see Cait Sith #2 arrive, because I would not have imagined the adventure continue without him in my team.

Awww, that was such a cute commentary about Cait Sith. I liked the image as well.
Espi's Cait Sith is really good also! I liked that the Mog that Cait Sith 2 is rides takes on a pinkish tint. Cait Sith remained in my party after that, haha.
These Temple of the Ancients scenes really affected me in the game. It felt like the end of the world was really coming, and the feeling of desperation was suffocating.
