I'll follow Necronopticous' logic and say Cid from FFVIII, as he would therefore be the fifth. Also the first parts of the riddle remind me of Squall's review of him in the missile attack, and his relationship with Edea.

From the way the riddles written, my guess is each line refers to consecutive FFs, however I've only played three that whatever the answer isn't missing from (1, 8 and 9). From them I want to say the monk class, as 9 sounds like Amarant to me, and theres an item in VIII called a Monk's Code if I remember.
If this is the right approach I suspect playing FFV will help a lot.
No to Grover (I think I already replied to his post yesterday, but my post disappeared? :confused: ) and no to PhoenixAsh, though your reasoning is on the right track.
And I'm going to be gone this weekend, so I'll answer any more guesses by Sunday evening Atlantic time.

Uh, just out of curiosity, why didn't anyone try to answer my riddle? :cry:
Anyway, the answer was the various princesses in the games.
First as a pawn, (Sara in FFI was a pawn of Garland)
Then as a leader, (Hilda in II led the Rebel Army)
Then a fighter. (Sarah was a fighter in III, right? I haven't played this one.)
Absent once, (No princesses in IV)
Before returning (in triplicate!). (Princesses Lenna, Faris, and Krile in V)
Absent twice more, (No princesses in VI or VII)
Then showing up again (though in name only). (Rinoa's nickname was princess in VIII)
Once again a comrade (but technically...not), (Princess Garnet in IX joined your party, but technically she was not the real Princess Garnet)
Before going missing again. (No princesses in X)

I did actually like it, and seeing it explained in full it was cleverer than I expected, I just hadn't played enough FFs to guess very well.
I like your riddle, as it was extremely well thought out. Don't feel bad if no one tried it doesn't mean no one tried. I tried, but I couldn't think of anything and didn't want to make a spam post. Anyway, I guess the next ones up for grabs, although this thread looks like it may have run its course.
Celes in FFVI was the princess of the empire, thats why I didnt get your riddle.
