Reason he's not in the tournament: Didn't finish the game on time
Taloon is a weapon's merchant who dreams of opening his own shop. He does so by adventuring out, striking deals, exploring dangerous caves, opening tunnels, and buying a store. He has a wife and child and had a day to day job before he went off to open his own store.
His family is sweet and he has the most supportive wife ever because he literally just up and leaves to start these plans without telling her or anything. But he works hard and in the end he achieves his dream. He's also cute and goofy looking.

Melia Antiqua, From Xenoblade Chronicles
Reason for not being in tournament: No second character to compete against
I don't want to spoil anything, so I'll keep this vague. Melia is a playable character and a mage of sorts. She can cast "elements" which will have certain effects until they are "released" at which point they will attack the enemy.
She comes off as kind of spoiled and haughty at first, but you learn it's because she's quite awkward and not always comfortable or knowing how to act. But she does care about people and has a strong resolve.
