I don't see what's so weird about that, it's pretty much universal that when you live somewhere more expensive you get paid more :p If you got the same pay as Londoners do, Edinburgh would be as expensive as London.

Anyway, that reminds me about one thing I found odd about French cuisine when I was over there: I don't want cheese for dessert. Give me cake or pie or ice cream, or something else actually sweet. Though I must say I loved the pastries they had for breakfast.
