You still have to be hit by it to learn it, and that isn't happening if you are alone.

If it is ineffective it still counts, iirc. So yeah, Blue Mages just need to keep away from multiples of 5.

Press the triangle button. Or the circle button. Try all of the buttons.

Depends on the game. Lv5 Death is a really situational spell anyway. I'm sure most blue mages could do without it.
